Game 36, Mariners at Yankees
Pettite vs. Millwood, 10 am
It would feel weird to me if I was looking at this and didn’t put a lineup up even if I don’t expect much posting traffic. In short, Pettite was out of baseball for a while, and then he came back fairly recently. The Mariners are sending their left-hander lineup to hit against him and haven’t had good results through three. No one has had a hit! Shouldn’t they have a scouting report on this guy? Unbelievable! But Millwood didn’t allow anything until the bottom of the third either so…. something. I don’t know. I anticipate silly home runs later.

The ump took a pitch away from Carp. Then Wedge took a pitch away from him. Eventually, Carp swung at a breaking ball a foot outside for strike three. I am not sure who to blame for that crap at bat, actually.
Back to the action: giving up walks and making errors are sweeter when the Yankees do it!
Ah, the “infield single to pitcher” for two runs. I’ll take it.
As soon as the pitcher fielded it and went to throw I knew, no chance to get him, you’re just risking throwing it away and giving up an extra run or two.

I guess swisher did not know that wells was drafted as a pitcher/outfielder. Home plate umpire can miss calls no matter where he is. Cool

It’s nice having quality defensive outfielders on staff.
I think carp will DH tomorrow with wells in LF to field balls off the wall and hold runners to singles. As long as carp gets into an “h” groove and if Smoak can continue to provide hope, we might have a fighting chance in Fenway. Two game series … Weird.
Except Carp hasn’t hit since he came back. Two home runs and not much else. Olivo-esque. It wouldn’t be so bad, except it seems like every time he makes an out, it’s GIDP.
No Liddi in Boston ?

I would love to see Liddi, Seager, productive wells productive Smoak productive Carp in the lineup, but yeah – go with whomever is hot and with best matchups available. Wells can also play CF, too. Carp only has 33 ab’s but a cold September, bad spring, bad rehab numbers and slow start to the season certainly aren’t helping his case to solidify anything. He followed up a great game with a bad game, and if he had been in LF today, it likely would have been a much different game with a different result.

I don’t know, perhaps they left him in NY the same way they left him in Detroit. Matchups ? Do you know Liddi’s hitting .321 vs RHP and .269 vs LHP and that his minor league splits have been quite similar? Productive ? He’s currently leading in .AVG and .OBP and second in .OPS
Pitch selection ? Ask Pettitte. Defense at 3B ? It’s no contest.
I like Liddi, too and would like to see him play consistently. Can’t keep Seager out of the lineup, and LF, DH and to a logical extent 1B are still in flux. I think we agreeing on the same things. If wells is not playing LF tomorrow, I will be surprised. It would be surprising to not see a young player who just had two hits, not play tomorrow too (Liddi) but Wedge has surprised us before in that way. Seager probably won’t sit tomorrow and if Wedge went with Liddi at DH instead of Carp, nobody could find fault with that. I don’t know who Boston will be pitching tomorrow, but there will be plenty of time to question his choices tomorrow
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Wells and Liddi in the lineup tomorrow. Lester is pitching for Boston, so I would expect to see a RH heavy lineup.

Two comments this morning, one positive and one perhaps not so much:
First, this morning the Mariners have 7 hitters with an OPS+ over 100. I don’t recall the last time that happened, it always seems like they only have about 2 hitters that high. Liddi, Seager, Jaso, Wells, Ichiro, Saunders, Montero. Ackley is at 95 and hopefully will join them soon.
The second point is that Ryan is leading the team in walks. In fact, he has more walks than hits. Good on him for the walks, but it seems like there is something wrong with your hitters when Ryan is leading in walks.
