Game 42, Mariners at Rockies
Vargas vs. Friedrich, 1:10 pm.
You might remember Christian Friedrich as one of the many players we could have selected back in the first round of the 2008 draft instead of Josh Fields, a college reliever with bad command who has never made any progress. Okay, that was a Bavasi/Fontaine pick, but Zduriencik still went ahead and signed Fields after he held out until the following spring.
Montero is back in the lineup after his day off.
2B-L Ackley
LF-R Wells
RF-L Ichiro
C-R Montero
3B-L Seager
1B-R Liddi
CF-L Saunders
SS-R Ryan
P-L Vargas

Carp!!
Thanks Westy. Cargo is very ordinary away from Coors.
Carp!!!.
He got all of that one!
CARP!!
BTW Olerud’s career line at Safeco: .268/.371/.438
I love how BR includes the nicknames for all the players – and Olerud didn’t have one.
When Beavan makes good contact, it sort of cheapens all the other big hits at Coors. 😉
Steve, I know what you mean re: Baseball Reference.
Of course, their terrible site design makes it even easier to get lost. 😀
I remember people calling him “Ole” (pronounced ah-lee)
I thought his career BA would have been higher than that (at Safeco). OBP isn’t bad. I’d take his line in a heartbeat over Smoak’s, though!
Mike, that’s one advantage to living east of the mountains – we’re getting rained on over here.
I’m getting tired of Adam Jones highlights. Salt in the wound :/ He’s off to a great start this year.
We have grey skies and a tiny sprinkle of rain in preparation for the apocalypse eclipse later this evening. Seven months early according to the Mayan calendar.
I find it hilarious that Carp has 7 hits and 6 of them are for extra bases. And while his BA is low his BABIP must be atrocious so hopefully he will start putting balls where they ain’t while continuing to hit for good power.
And Yes, I am a Carp apologist
Edgar4Hall,
I’m not a huge Carp fan but – you’re right. His BABIP has been hovering in the low .100-ish range.
I’ve been wondering if he’s still not healthy, frankly.
Regarding Gonzales, that first year in Oakland, was his only less-than-stellar one. I doubt that year effects his career OPS much. I didn’t realize the numbers were that different on the road. Shouldn’t have been a huge surprise, given that home is Coors Field. I still like him though!
I wonder what the average difference in OPS is on every player’s splits collectively? Wanna find that one Westy?! Or maybe just with starters? That should make it easier 😛 I gotta run. Hope the lead holds-up.
Mike, I think we’re going to have to call it a draw. 😉
Steve,
I just looked up two teams 2012 OPS
Home Away
Seattle .607 .682
Texas .784 .851
The Texas numbers suprise me. The Mariners numbers depress me.
What is the forecast for Wednesday’s game And, is there any message you would like for me to pass along to Wedge? He will be within earshot.
Mike – “Showers likely”. Although the weather is supposed to start improving the second half of the week, so maybe you guys will get lucky.
Wedge… heheheheheeh
To answer Steve’s question, more or less…
I eyeballed what FanGraphs listed, league-wide, for the past ten years. OPS has dropped dramatically, especially over the past 2-3 seasons.
Home OPS: was .780ish, now .750ish
Away OPS: was .730ish, now .700ish
So the splits aren’t nearly as dramatic as what you see at Coors. But it’s not surprising there’s some split given that teams probably tend to build for their home parks.
By the third game of the Texas massacre series, I will probably come up with a few things to relay – all on my own. I will dress appropriately for the Seattle weather. Five layers of easy to remove clothing, should just about do it. I think I will be getting the millwood game. Woot?
We seem to have switched to Late Spring mode over here – so at least it’s not cold, most of the time.
Actually I can’t complain. We had several nice weekends in a row, and yesterday was nice (albeit on the cool side, in the mid 60s).
Ah, Wells making an appearance.
HAHAHAAH! Liddi triple!
Big Dude moves pretty well.
That’ll teach that outfielder not to dog it. Heads up play by Liddi, noticing the guy was taking it easy.
Hey, 70’s socks!
Good thing they spotted us 4 runs…
That wasn’t a bad pitch, but Giambi managed to hit it.
We should have sold high on League.
That’s the problem with the “always establish the fastball first” philosophy…
Hey League … Eat a big bag of crap.
Thank goodness.
Hey Mike – we indeed will have to call it a draw. 😀
Yes, a draw it is. Good sweep! How often might we be able to say that.
League makes things way too interesting.
I didn’t actually expect you to look that up Westy, but thanks! Why didn’t I think to check Fangraphs?! I missed the end of the game, but I’m glad I didn’t have to sweat League’s performance!
Yeah, “sweat” was the right word. It dredeged up memories of watching Jose Mesa close for the M’s (back before he completely imploded).
BTW how about those Angels? They’re still slumming around in the AL West basement with all the other non-Arlington-based teams…
Funny thing about Mesa, is that he had a couple of decent seasons with the Phillies, after leaving Seattle. But if you’re comparing League to him, I’m REALLY glad I missed the end!
Well it was a similar feeling from what I remember with Mesa. I started out thinking “I think he’ll probably get it done, no problem” and then got to “Okay, he gave up a run but should still be okay” and finally hit “how close is this going to get before he makes the final out?”
