Game 64, Padres at Mariners
Marquis vs Noesi, 7:10 pm.
What’s the cure for a struggling offense? Facing Jason Marquis. He’s been a disaster this year, with his ability to get ground balls his only redeeming quality at this point. His strikeout rate has fallen to a Beavan’s level, and he got hit around enough in Minnesota to earn his walking papers. The M’s should be able to put some runs on the board tonight. Well, theoretically anyway.
Gutierrez is not in the line-up tonight, but they did cut his rehab assignment short a bit, so it’s possible he was just scheduled for a day off today anyway. I’d imagine he’ll be in there tomorrow, and with the new and improved roster, it’s not a big deal that he’s not playing – Casper Wells deserves some at-bats too. This 25 man group is probably the best the Mariners have had at any point this season. We’re an Olivo-dumping away from having the near perfect roster that the organization could put together with what they have in house.

Seager, 3B

absolut-
I always laughed a bit about the whole steroid issue when nobody cared how many guys were on cocaine in the ’70s… And back in the “innocent” days of the early half of the 1900’s it was a legal pain remedy, abused all over the place (“hi” Babe Ruth).
So who is the Mariners All-Star at this point? My choices would be, in order of selection:
1. Saunders – He’s playing the best of any Mariner right now.
2. Seager – He’s been playing well since day 1 and has been “clutch” which will give the All-start announcers something to talk about.
3. Ichiro – His offensive numbers suck, but for nostalgia and name identification he makes sense, and he has the highest UZR of any player at any position in baseball right now (yes I know its not much of a sample size)
3. Brendan Ryan – See Ichiro except for the nostalgia and name recognition. Ryan is the best defensive shortstop in baseball.
4. Wilhelmsen – They always can use a good setup man or closer at the All-star game, he’s got a good story, and his curveball to Alexi Ramirez will make a great highlight to show.
5. Luetge – He’s got nothing going for him except he’s a Loogy, has a 0.00 ERA, and I am sure he’d have to be the only rule 5 rookie ever in the All-star game.
Five hour energy and loading up on caffeine is how some of these guys stay “up” now. I don’t think lethargy is anybody’s problem. Too many ways around it, legally nowadays. The problem is related to talent level more than anything. Plus, we are in the middle of a new “pitching era” and a specialized one at that.
I’d vote for Saunders, but Seager is a good choice too.
Not that most voters will look at advance stats, but they’re pretty much neck in neck value-wise.
Ichiro will get the vote for consistency. The fan base will not waver much I think.
My bad MrZ…..but the post two above mine was quite bad.
I’d vote for Muni. It was crazy how he did that Jedi mind trick and made Alonso drop the ball.
Saunders and Seager are our most deserving players, but the league is loaded with outfielders and infielders more deserving. Quite frankly, the Mariners don’t have an all star caliber player, based on performance, but my guess is that a pitcher will be selected. Probably Felix. Maybe Luetge. Felix will probably rally enough to be selected. I certainly can’t see more than one representative unless a dozen guys bail on the event.
This team is an open-faced shit sandwich.
Jephdood, This is more representative of our season…
This may be more to your liking, however.
