Game 90, Rangers at Mariners
Hisashi Iwakuma vs. Matt Harrison, a while ago
Sorry again for the delayed game-thread. The M’s trail the Rangers 1-0 after an RBI groundout in the first. Iwakuma’s walked two, in the first two innings; his K:BB ratio hasn’t really translated from the bullpen, but he hasn’t been awful. His ground-balling ways have helped, as he’s already induced a double play grounder.
1: Ryan
2: Ichiro
3: Wells
4: Montero (DH)
5: Smoak
6: Seager (2B)
7: Olivo (C)
8; Saunders
9: Figgins
SP: Iwakuma
Dustin Ackley gets a day off and Figgins gets a start at 3B so….yeah.

Haha, Marc, there hasn’t really been a lot to comment about with today’s game!
Iwakuma is not impressing us today.
Could this be the worst lineup of the year?
I think it has plenty of competition for that honor, RM.
In the first inning I was hopeful we might have a decent game today… but I’m not really seeing any evidence since then.
Kinsler certainly has no problems with the walls being where they are.
We definitely need to move the fences back.
I’d lookup current on base pcts for Ryan, Olivo, Small and Figgins. But I don’t want to know how historically bad this lineup is. That is too depressing.
Ryan’s OBP is actually not horrid – .284 – because he’s taken a lot of walks.
But the other guys you mentioned… ugh.
All right Condor! Let’s get something going!
CRAP.
Ryan!
I guess after yesterday the Mariners thought they’d give their bats a day off…
That last AB should drop Smoak under .200.
Steve, Gameday now has him at .199 for the season.
.199 !!!!!!!!
Olivo is now hitting better than Smoak – he’s at .200 exactly.
Saunders again! Let’s not screw it up this time guys.
I should point out that Smoak’s OBP is over .260, and is well ahead of Olivo’s.
2 hit day for Saunders. Good for him. Maybe he will bat even lower in the order, tomorrow.
Smoak leading off tomorrow with Olivo hitting second? Why not!
I’m beginning to believe Saunders success against lefties isn’t a fluke.
Hehe Mike – it’ll be Smoak, Olivo, Figgins leading off.
GIDP, what a surprise.
Haha, Figgins grabbed Kinsler’s foot!
I would have left Furbush in the game.
I am hoping for the following, because if tomorrow’s nap is anywhere near as good as today’s was … Woo, howdy!
Smoak 1B
Olivo “C”
Figgins 3B
Ryan SS
Kawasaki 2B
League DH
Peguero LF
Wedge CF
Datz RF
Seeing your lineup, I just about spit coffee on my computer, Mike.
Glad I could help.
Keep in mind, there is no way that lineup could score fewer runs than today’s.
OK admittedly off subject, but I’ve got to say how glad I am to have the golden voice of a real Mariner, Rick Rizzs, doing the TV side…now if we can only get the thick heads who run this organization to listen, he’ll be put in the TV broadcast box permanently. If so, it could very well be the BEST move they make during the second half and go a long way towards keep their fans!
And that’s the game.
No, TeeCee – that’s a good enough subject. It’s the only change made during the break that can be discussed.
Yammering on for hours in regard to changes that might be made but never are, is Bob and Groz’ job. I found it especially compelling when they recently debated which hand Justin Smoak threw with … For half their show. Talk about learned media members with their fingers on the pulse of the Seattle area sporting world!
No, your topic is far more interesting. I think it was a good change for ROOT to have made. Sims seems better on the radio. Rizzs is good in either spot. Not sure how much is ROOT and how much is the team in regard to those types of decisions, though.
So….Ackley shows a little sign of improvement yesterday finally producing with a double…and you sit him today with Figgins in the lineup?..
Rizzs is way better on TV. I can see when the ball is short of the warning track, so I don’t care about how he calls it. On the radio, he makes routine fly balls sound like they are going out, which is very frustrating.
@NRF: I thought so, too, but Wedge said this SP was particularly tough on lefties and he thought Ackley was looking good recently, so he didn’t wanna mess with his confidence. I guess it makes sense.
NRFully, Wedge’s stated reason for doing that was that Harrison has been very good against lefties, and with Ackley showing some improvement lately he didn’t want to risk setting him back.
I’m not saying I agree with it – Ackley’s going to have to face tough lefties at some point – but that was his reasoning.
I’m not a fan of Rizz, so I’m selfishly hoping he’ll head back to the radio side soon. 😀
Waco, you and I were answering NRFully at the same time apparently. I wasn’t meaning to step on or ignore your answer.
Haha, no problem.
Some say the better play by play man should be on radio because it’s more important to paint a picture with words.
I don’t think he stills does it, but Rick used to come back on radio from a break after a pitch ahead been made and call the play as if it was just happening then. I was at a game listening with my headset when he called a GIDP that had already happened.
I wonder if they will ever get a full-time replacement for Niehaus.
/Will they ever get a full-time replacement/….sure hope so G-man, and preferably one that doesn’t cackle unrelentingly like Sims.
It’s a race to the bottom!
Miguel Olivo, 2012: .199/.216/.348
Justin Smoak, 2012: .199/.262/.324
Mario Mendoza, eat your heart out!
I honestly believe there is going to be some big changes, sooner than later, with even more surprises in the off-season. I just can’t imagine Jack being patient much longer with the way things are going.
About Rizzs… I like him. Always have. I think he’s by far the best broadcaster we have. He tries hard to put a positive spin on things and doesn’t get caught-up in too many personal stories that go nowhere. The stories he does tell, I enjoy. He’s far more accurate with his contact-judgement (I just made that up) as well.
I saw him on the elevator yesterday after the Q&A. He noticed the Felix sign under my arm, and immediately started with some friendly small talk. I told him there was a bonus King’s Court tonight, and he honestly seemed excited about it. He’s a true baseball fan. I respect him.
@Gman
It’s very possible the game you were referring to on the radio, had a delay, rather than being on real-time. I know the TV delay is considerably longer than radio, though.
One more thing…. it really isn’t fair to talk about a replacement for Dave. Nobody can replace him. Rick knows that as well as anyone. He was probably the first to say there’s no replacing him! Rick’s just being himself, and doing his best to entertain us, while supporting the Mariners in the process. Personally, I think he’s doing a damn fine job. Especially when you consider what the Mariners are doing this season.
I don’t mind Rizzs TOO much.. but it would be nice if he’d let more than two seconds pass without feeling the need to open his yap about SOMETHING. That was the beauty of Dave. Sometimes is best to just shut up for a few.
@stevem – I have listened to games on radio while attending them for years, and there is never a delay. Others have commented on Rick’s antics as well.
But I like having Rick, don’t get me wrong.
For that matter, the broadcasters are the least of the Mariners’ problems.
I’ve never experienced that myself, but it’s worth noting, the majority of fans listening on the radio, aren’t at the games, so they wouldn’t know the difference. Maybe that’s intentional?
@jephood
All broadcasters are suppose to talk. There isn’t suppose to be dead-air. You can get away with silence on TV, but not so much with radio.
@stevemotivateir, EXACTLY why Rizzs is better suited for radio.
That applies to TV as well, jephood, there’s just a little more room than with radio. If you’d rather have Sims, I feel sorry for you.
It applies a LOT less to TV. You haven’t forgotten Dave, have you? Or listen to a Scully broadcast sometime.
Never said I’d rather have Sims, so no need to feel sorry. What I’d rather have is Rizzs remain on the radio, and that they bring up/hire Curto.
Are you kidding me? One of the first things I said, was that it isn’t fair to compare people to Dave. You’re going to be disappointed every time if you do that.
Funny you mentioned Curto, though, because I thought I heard something about him calling some games on 710 yesterday. Not sure if it would be for radio or TV. Hopefully TV, if it limits or removes Sims.
