Game 121, Twins at Mariners

Jason Vargas vs. Scott Diamond, 6:10pm

Franklin Gutierrez starts for Tacoma tonight on a rehab assignment; sounds like he may rejoin the M’s when rosters expand.

Scott Diamond’s a Twins pitcher, which means he’s a command/control lefty.

The line-up:
1: Ackley
2: Robinson
3: Montero (C)
4: Olivo (DH)
5: Seager
6: Smoak
7: Wells
8: Saunders
9: Ryan
SP: Vargas

What would the win probability have been if Ackley had actually gotten the bunt down and given up an out? Stop bunting Wedge! Well at least he mucked it up and worked a good walk. Seriously, though the Mariners don’t get on base enough to give up outs like that.

Holy shit. John Jaso has a .902 OPS.

A MARINER HAS AN OPS OVER .900!

Jaso is looking like a pretty good pickup, eh?

And Wilhelmson gets the win after facing one batter.

And that is what people want to base the Cy Young award on. Ugh.

Jeff Sullivan made the case that Jaso hasn’t faced enough lefties for us to write him off as just being a (really good) platoon player. I’d like to see him get a chance to prove that right or wrong.

If we get to a positive run differential just once before the end of the season, can that be considered a win?

So now, the Mariners have played .500 ball since May 16. Over three months. Maybe this team is better than the last few years. I am guessing that the Mariners have not strung three months of .500 ball since 2007.

I think they might have in 2009.

21-13 since the all-star break, that’s when it started to turn around, I think.

Man, if these guys aren’t careful they’re gonna blow next year’s high draft pick!

After all those August collapses (going back to 2002, really), it’s nice to see them play decent ball in the heat of the summer. My expectations are low and they’re exceeding them (of course, Felix’s total awesomeness is a big part of that).

Nice to see Ackley pullin’ himself up. He has thirteen hits and seven RBI’s over the last ten games. Also has a four game hitting streak. Nothing to do flips over, but it’s certainly encouraging!
