Cactus League Game 5, Mariners at Indians

Danny Hultzen vs. Some Guy 12:05pm

The M’s won their fourth straight yesterday with a come-back win over Milwaukee. Today they look to push around some other homespun midwesterners when they face Cleveland. Danny Hultzen gets the start, looking to build on his seven pitches, seven strikes, three outs inning the other day. Following him is Taijuan Walker, who’ll also get two innings. And only after that, when despair has set in amongst the Tribe’s batsmen, only when their soft underbelly has been casually exposed, will the M’s send Hector Noesi back to the mound. Tune in early, folks.

As with yesterday’s game, the radio broadcast is tape delayed until 7:05pm. If you’d like to listen live, get to a computer and go to mariners.com for the call.

Line-up:
1: Ackley, 2B
2: Wells, LF
3: Seager, 3B
4: Morales, 1B
5: Ibanez, DH
6: Saunders, CF
7: Paulino, C
8: Peguero, RF
9: Ryan, SS
SP: Danny Hultzen

An interesting line-up, with Ackley and Ryan back, and with Wells getting another start batting in the #2 spot. Also, Morales makes his first start at 1B.

with what??? you can’t leave us hanging like that!

  2. Nate on February 27th, 2013 10:54 am

Oh, and with all these come-from-behind wins so far, make sure to tune in late as well. Our AA guys have been doing pretty well against their AA guys lately…

No Smoak? But where there’s Smoak, there’s fire!

  4. maqman on February 27th, 2013 11:05 am

Smoak don’t need no fire, he’s hot enough thank you.

Any chance the Yankees will take Ibanez back now that Granderson is out? Please…I’d much rather keep Wells around.

I hate listening to games where the other team has new guys who are much better than the guys our team decided to pass on.

  7. Westside guy on February 27th, 2013 12:45 pm

    Four strikeouts – good!
    Two walks… okay.

Also, my previous post doesn’t make sense – I apparently shifted to another train of thought 3/4 of the way through.

Ugh, Ibañez is making his case for Wedge to stick him in the field regularly…

  9. Westside guy on February 27th, 2013 1:00 pm

    Peggy can sure hit dingers!

  10. Mid80sRighty on February 27th, 2013 1:09 pm

I’m guessing Peggy is getting a healthy dose of fastballs today…

Carlos Peguero’s making this team, isn’t he?

Ok, ok, probably not, but Eric Thames is hosed. He was already hosed, of course, but this just settles it.

  12. Mid80sRighty on February 27th, 2013 1:17 pm

How much you wanna bet they’d keep Peggy over Wells?

Is that audio link not working for anyone else? Seems to work if you go to the audio link on the mlb gameday/box score. Could just be a browser thing.

    Radio says Walker touched 98mph.

  15. Mid80sRighty on February 27th, 2013 1:20 pm

I’m listening through the MLB app on my phone just fine

  16. Westside guy on February 27th, 2013 1:25 pm

I’m listening through Gameday – sorry.

    Walker has sounded impressive.

  17. stevemotivateir on February 27th, 2013 1:38 pm

Seriously, Peguero has just one strike out so far this spring? I have every confidence in his ability to remain inconsistent, but even this is a real stretch for him.

  18. marc w on February 27th, 2013 1:38 pm

Yeah, it’s working for me now – through gameday.

Walker sounded amazing. Many reports of a ‘filthy’ cutter at 91-92 or so. Lance Painter is a miracle worker.

  19. jephdood on February 27th, 2013 1:50 pm

Spring Training results mean hardly anything, and I’m hoping the M’s brass remembers who Carlos Peguero REALLY is.

  20. stevemotivateir on February 27th, 2013 1:53 pm

Well, that’s a considerably better appearance for Noesi.

  21. marc w on February 27th, 2013 1:53 pm

Perfect – Noesi gets a strikeout and pitches around a few baserunners. Just as we drew it up – dispirited by Taijuan Walker, the Indians couldn’t summon the will to battle Hector Noesi.

  22. Westside guy on February 27th, 2013 1:54 pm

    hehehe

  23. Westside guy on February 27th, 2013 1:55 pm

    Come ON Casper.

  24. Westside guy on February 27th, 2013 2:45 pm

    Mariners win!

  25. Mid80sRighty on February 27th, 2013 2:53 pm

Undefeated! Or does the charity game count in the standings? Either way, see all you nerds that live in your mom’s basements? What the M’s needed was homeruns and gritty veteran leadership!

  26. Paul B on February 27th, 2013 4:37 pm

If he has somehow learned some sort of pitch recognition, Peguero could actually be good.

That’s a huge if, though, I almost think his career would be unprecedented if that turns out to happen.

  27. lalo on February 27th, 2013 5:18 pm

Glad we didn´t trade Tai. He could be the next Verlander or the next Felix. He´s really awesome apparently.

  28. Westside guy on February 27th, 2013 7:37 pm

Wells really needs to start pulling it together – for OUR sakes.

I know, I know, really small sample sizes. But whatever they say about looking at process rather than results, it’s harder to see the good in a guy who’s hitting .077.

I’m not advocating anything… just observing. But a nice torrid streak for him sure sounds good right about now.

  29. SDMsfan on February 28th, 2013 12:51 am

I don’t really care what his batting average is in ST as long as he’s ready by the season. Kawasaki, Ryan were decent in spring training last year while Jaso didn’t hit until the season started.

Some of our good bats aren’t putting up good numbers yet.
