Let’s assume Villone can get out of this second inning, which right now, looks like a pretty big assumption. That will bring his line in the last 21 innings to the following:

21 IP, 32 H, 25 ER, 4 HR, 15 BB, 12 K

That’s a sparkly 10.71 ERA in his last 5 starts. I think he can kiss that contract extension goodbye.

    On the other hand, he’s also a “proven veteran.”

    That’s OK, more money for Delgado and Orlando Cabrera.

    I think he will get the extension. As much as I am against it, he will get it. He will be used out of the pen though, I am sure, and they will use his bullpen numbers as justification..

    But I hope you’re right.

    Good call Dave. But as dumb as our FO are, I am sure he will get it. I don’t mind as much to see him from the pen, just not as a starter.

    What worries me is that we have a really dumb GM, plus a Scott Boras client. You know what that means….

    Approach the problem the opposite way; describe how you would fill out the rotation and the pen for next year, being sure to include someone capable of long relief in there. I dont say this because i think villone is a good option; i just think that he will be seen as being “as good as any” for a long relief role/occaisonal starter. Especially for a team that has demonstrably burned itself by using its judgement on outside talent in the past.
