Jeremy Bonderman vs. Edwin Jackson, 1:10pm
It’s 90 degrees in Seattle today, a second straight perfect day. I’ve got a beer, my kids are playing on a slip and slide, and for whatever reason, I just can’t summon the will to write about Jeremy Bonderman vs. Edwin Jackson.
1: Chavez
2: Franklin
3: Ibanez
4: Morales (DH)
5: Seager
6: Smoak
7: Bay
8: Miller
9: Blanco
SP: Bonderman
Interesting that Wedge has bumped Seager down from his customary 3rd spot to….I’m sorry…I’ve got an emergency gin and tonic to prepare. Go M’s!
Atta boy Brad Miller!
Going back a little bit but I’d be very surprised if Carlos Rodon is still available at the third pick. he’s rated the No. 1 prospect by a long ways and might have gone number one this year if he could have come out.
With that said, Sean Manea was No 1. on everyone’s board in November so a lot can still change. But I wouldn’t bank on us getting Rodon.
19 U’s.
Marta boy Kyle Seager!
…and now, Seager will never get a day off.
WTF?
“Atta”
I got to finally get dressed (don’t judge me) and load the dishwasher and they pull within one?
So what is the record for homers by a guy 41 OR OLDER? They keep leaving that out. I can’t pin it down from a search. It may or may not be true for that.
Break there.
What was Miller doing?
Come on Endy!
Ted Wllliams has the record: 29.
Ibanez is going to break the record. Then, Mariners resign him. And then we suffer through a horrible season from him.
But he’ll be giving all that leadership from the bench, so it’ll totally be worth the roster spot.
The sad thing is Ibanez could have been useful this year if he wasn’t put in LF everyday. As a DH? That would have been useful. Next year when the power numbers disappear and his defense is still horrible, he will be a nightmare.
Ah, it’s a wonderful day! A big dump for Slade Gorton — oh, that’s Gorton, not Gordon, dmanjam; if you want to keep his memory alive, you could be bothered to spell his name correctly.
Also, Slade Gorton is still alive. And it’s even better knowing that Gorton is probably distressed that gay people are clearly winning over hatred. And you also, dmanjam; you’re losing, and all that you can do is try to troll. Go on — you’re funny.
I prefer referring to our former AG and Senator as “Skeletor”.
(I actually liked him for the most part)
Nice play to rob Rauuuuuul.
Well, poop.
What was the point in Brad pointing out that all Bay’s homers have been solo shots, I wonder?
At least today I did not have to witness Ackley and Saunders attempting to strike a baseball with a bat.I know that either or both could still be referred to as “prospects”, being young and talented enough to turn it around, but, at bat, Saunders has not rebounded well from the shoulder injury and Ackley exudes all of the grace and confidence of a newt in the beak of an eagle. Chavez shows a legit spark and it is far more entertaining to watch his (temporary?) competence than to see Saunders and Ackley flailing (with potential)… oh well, “that’s Mariner Baseball”.
Interesting to look at most total HRs after age 40 …looks to me like Raul has 28 (he hit 9 last year before he turned 40).
The great Carlton Fisk hit 72 after age 40, incredible because he was still mostly catching (465 gms as C, 40 as DH, 12 as 1B – thank you baseball-reference!). Equally amazing, Fisk ended up playing more games for the White Sox than the Red Sox- i remember well because when Fisk was signed as a free agent, i was a White Sox fan thinking that we typically got a superstar in his declining years – at age 33 – but he ended up playing & catching till he was 45!
The only player to hit more HRs after age 40 is – wait for it! – Barry Bonds, who hit 79 (thanks baseball-almanac!). The sad thing is, freakishly-talented as he was, we’ll never know how many he would have hit w/o the juice.
So the total HRs after 40 is probably out of reach for Raul …or can he pull a Fisk & play till age 45?
milb.com shows Tacoma with 26 active players on the roster with 14 pitchers and 12 position players.
Did Kinney accept the Tacoma job?
Kinney did accept the AAA assignment.
Hammerin’ Hank Aaron hit 42 homers after turning 40, then retired.
So how can the Rainiers have 26 active players on roster? Understood 25 was the limit (then add your DL and rehab projects to that).
I’ll try again. Before you guys get nasty on some of my comments, I should inform you that some are tongue in cheek. I don’t expect Ibanez to catch, for example, I was merely pointing out some of the
lengths that excuses are made for some of the roster moves.
We started the season with 5 DH’s(Montero is a DH or nothing) with no catcher, no SS, no center fielder, no left fielder, and a possible right fielder in Saunders. We hear, “but we have a great farm system, and look at AA and AAA”.
Well, we had a possible SS, a promising 2nd baseman,-both now on the Mariners- and who look real good early on, and ??? in the outfield. Ackley is converting, and maybe he’ll succeed and some other solution will present itself. Until then, Raul can hit homers and be available as a back up catcher.
Oh yeah, and the M’s can hit bad bull pens really well.
Also we’ll never know how many Bonds hit after forty because he’d retired “retired” early; nobody wanted to hire him because of the flap he’d cause, despite some gas still in his tank.
I did not know you had left, but welcome back. And don’t let “snark” bother you too much. It’s actually part of the listed site mantra, so it is what it is.
I have been meaning to ask you what year you actually saw Satchell Paige pitch. This Site needs guys like that.
My earliest memory of watching baseball (on TV) was in 1970 or 1971 and telling my Dad that I thought it was boring. Good thing Dad stuck with it … He provided me with something I could play, coach, umpire, watch and enjoy for an entire lifetime. Other than the brief period of time when my skull was actually still “hardening,” that is … And the 2.5 year Wedge era.
Also, I see that Carlos Peguero has been re-assigned. Let me be the first one to say “oh boy!” However, he is currently better than not having any options. Probably.
Wait… what was that about Peguero?
msfanmike-I saw him several times at Yankee Stadium when he was with the St. Louis Browns.
I grew up in Newark, NJ and we went to a lot of ball games. I saw the Bobby Thomson HR on my TV on Vorhees St. in Newark. I was a Dodger fan and my best friend, who lived a couple of streets from me was a Giants fan. Of course I remember Mantle, Mays and Robinson as rookies.
I can write more history later but for now I would like for the Mariners to make some history and contend for a World Series.
Westy: I was looking through player stats on the mariners.com mobile site after todays game and I saw that Peguero was “re-assigned.” I likely misinterpreted the information as being an up to date transaction on the player instead of being the departure transaction away from the big club at the time THAT particular transaction was made.
At Sawsatch: if you saw Satchell Paige at Yankee Stadium, did anyone in your family see the generation of players prior to that timeframe? And if they did, how might they answer this question: Ruth or Cobb?
I apologize if this has been discussed, but anyone else find it curious that Brad Miller doesn’t wear batting gloves? Don’t see that too much anymore!
Brad Miller also wears stirrups on his pant stockings:). A pleasant turning back of the clock from players who wear their pants like marching band drum majors.
And the upright stance at the plate. Yes, definitely harkens back to years gone by.
