Blackley update

After conficting opinions on what was shown in Blackley’s MRI, the M’s have decided to take the wait-and-see approach. Considering that he’s likely to miss all of ’05 whether he has surgery now or in the spring, it’s probably not a terrible idea.
Of course, the rest-and-rehab option almost never works, so surgery for Travis Blackley is most likely inevitable. It just won’t happen soon.

Didn’t they take the wait and see approach with Meche and R. Anderson?
I think they’re still waiting on Greg Hibbard, Tim Davis, Rafael Carmona and Brian Holman, too.

Don’t forget Roger Salkeld, who before his injury was one of the best pitching prospects the Mariner farm system ever (and maybe will ever) see.
Oh, I could keep going … Clint Zavaras, Kerry Woodson, Matt Wagner, Bill Wilkinson, Karl Best, Brian Allard … it’s just too depressing.

I actually feel like crying a little bit. It really is sad news.
Ah, Matt Wagner I remember him well. Can you really count him on the
list of injured Mariner pitchers? His injury occurred after he’d be traded to the Expos in the Jeff Fassero deal (and he never reached the bigs again). Interesting Matt Wagner fact — in one of the Jay Buhner highlights they always show, him throwing out Fernando Vina at third in the Kingdome, it was Wagner that caught the ball and applied the tag. Given that his career ERA was almost 7.00 that just might have been the highlight of his career (well he did win 3 games, so…).

What about Mike Moore? The only thing wrong with him was his heart.
Trading Salkeld for Belcher was one of Woody’s (or should I say Lou’s) best trades.
Ah Greg Hibbard, king of the 60 day DL. I remember the M’s freaking out when he said he would be ready soon to go out on a rehab assignment. If he ever had, the M’s insurance checks on him would have ended. I would bet the insurance payments the M’s received for him were off-budget (like the recent construction settlement) so the M’s could claim a bigger paper loss in those days.
So is there any way to objectively analyze this problem? Have there been any comparison studies that demonstrate that this organization has a higher rate of pitcher injury than others, and if so, by how much?
I mean, we can do a head count (or torn labrum count), and it sure seems abnormal, but compared to what?
