Game 10, Athletics at Mariners
Erasmo Ramirez vs. Sonny Gray, 6:10pm
*Note the odd, one-hour-earlier start time tonight*
These two pitchers faced off last weekend, and I spent the game preview talking about how Erasmo was throwing more change-ups and fewer sliders, and Sonny Gray was throwing his new cutter more often. As it turned out, Erasmo used fewer change-ups on that day and Gray went back to his big curveball. Gray obviously didn’t suffer, blanking the M’s through 6 IP with 7 Ks.

Lots to talk about (Beavan up, not Walker! Noesi to Texas!) but my cable modem just died and I’m on my cell phone.
Anyone know a good docsis modem that won’t blow up during game posts?

Willie’s defense is valuable at DH!
Bloomquist? Are you kidding me? We’re pinch hitting WFB?
WILLIE B!
So you have Corey Hart sitting there and you choose to pinch hit with Willie Bloomquist
Whoop, there it is.
Whatever.
Of course it worked.
Hey, two hits in a row!
Guess I should put down my spreadsheets or something.
COME ON CONDOR!
I think OF are going to have as much trouble with the transfer rule as catchers will with the no blocking rule.
But so far its been the baserunners that haven’t been able to adjust, I think all 3 times the Mariners have not been able to complete the catch they’ve gotten a baserunner that didn’t adjust.
Guess I should’ve been more specific.
Is Cory Hart hurt of something?
So bragging rights go to Highlights tonight…. ;o(
That game did not seem as close as the score would indicate.
Kfrie2, I haven’t heard anything… but Hart has had issues with his forearms during spring training and the start of the season. So who knows.
Why would we leave our back up catcher in to bat in that situation?
Hart is marinating on the bench;)
Kaz, true, but I still hate the rule
Ouch. I would have suspected Hart to PH for either LoMo or Buck. Or let Zunnio hit for Buck.
And Saunders not taking advantage of opportunities.
Regression to the mean?
I’m sure you realize we are still very much in small sample size territory. But it is quite possible this team is not as good as it appeared to be when it was facing the Angels.
I’d really like to see a bit more variety when it comes to opponents. 😉
A win tomorrow would mean winning the series against the two-time defending division champions. I will take it.
reading the blogs I always get the impression it is only possible to enjoy baseball if the Mariners go 162-0 or Seahawks 16-0 for that matter. It seems to me there is lots to enjoy about a baseball game even if the M’s lose 3-1.
Some people still panic when the M’s do not score big or hit much at home even though that is the norm. I hope they get twenty hits and score twelve runs today but I will take a 1-0 win especially with Kazmir pitching. If they only get a couple hits to do it will be no big deal.
Now if they cannot hit in Texas that is a problem. Low scoring in Safeco is sort of par for the course for the M’s and the opposition.
Noting after Saturdays game and a few innings into Sunday’s…
Our team still seems to have hacktastic tendencies. It is especially obvious when they’re playing a patient team like the A’s. Right now, just two innings into Sunday’s game, the Oakland pitcher has thrown 31 pitches – our guy has thrown 50. I noticed a similar imbalance yesterday.
Not down on the M’s at all. If M’s end the season at .500 I’ll be happy with that. Indeed enjoy each game on its own. But when the M’s look so good (against a less than good Angels) and hold their own against the A’s, to see them falter on these low scoring games makes the games seem longer. Kind of like once you drive 65 its hard to revert back to 55. I stated before these low scoring defensive games at Safeco are not as enjoyable as road games, unless you’re at Safeco itself. At any rate situational hitting is clutch and M’s are not getting it done. It’s 0-0 top of the eighth. Hopefully Furbush can hold it/doesn’t blow it then time for Seager to get busy at the plate.
What was that about Furbush not blowing it?
Fortunately it’s a beautiful day outside, and I’ve got plenty to get done. I’m just peeking in on the Mariners every few innings.
One thing about Seager… we’ve all noted his absurdly low batting average, but he’s walking like crazy. So far this year he’s got an on-base percentage that’s pretty decent – above .300.
I certainly expect him to start hitting, but it’s not like he’s been killing the team by making tons of outs.
And as soon as post I Furbush blows it…again. 3-3 count a slider over the plate to Cespedes. Game over. It’s been suggested Furby is the best reliever the M’s have against left handers. That may be, but against righties he blows up.
Westie…the thing is the M’s depend on his power, at least the last couple seasons. No one else has been as consistent. Pitchers are pitching away from him and he has a good eye. But if he is walking often he should be moved up early in the lineup so Cano can advance him. As it is no one is behind Seager to move him forward. And Seager is not a threat to steal bases so putting him on first base is not a big deal. Now if LoMo or Romero could be more effective at the plate that would help Seager. It’s early in the season and advantage goes to the pitchers.
I should say advantage goes to the A’s pitchers.
When Beavan comes back Tuesday Leutge should be going to Tacoma. Please.
DooLittle challenges with almost every pitch right down the middle. Cano challenges right back every pitch. He’s the stud among Mariner ponies.
A’s pitchers: 11K 0BB
But hats off to Chris Young. Not always the best control but he battled and was able to get himself out of trouble and keep the A’s hitters off kilter. Allowed no runs over a full six innings with 97 pitches. Deserving to be on the roster as fifth starter or long relief.
Beltre to 15-day DL. Rangers activatated Noesi, to serve as long relief pitcher. Both good news for the M’s. Beltre can come off DL for Rangers late April visit to Safeco.
Yankee manager Girardi previously stated Brendan Ryan (DL, upper cervical spine issue) will not be available until sometime after May 1.
However, the Yankees need to bring up from AAA an infielder, as well as a catcher, which could force the Yankees to move Ryan to the 60-day disabled list, or possibly designated for assignment.
Ryan’s DL status was backdated to March 22, so he could be placed on the 60-day DL and eligible to return by May 22.
And free agent Kendrys Morales is still waiting to be signed. Ouch. Hopefully Boras is paying Kendrys mortgage.
