Game 121, Mariners at Tigers
King Felix vs. David Price, 4:08pm
I’m not going to say this is the biggest game of Felix’s career. That it might be is actually a bit depressing, so forget I mentioned it.
This game features two recent Cy Young winners, and the winner will take the lead in the wild card chase. What more do you need? This *feels* like the biggest game the M’s have played since…what, 2003?
The Tigers are reeling and now they deal with Felix. Go Mariners.
1: Jackson, CF
2: Ackley, LF
3: Cano, 2B
4: Morales, DH
5: Denorfia, RF
6: Seager, 3B
7: Zunino, C

Actually, if we win, we won’t take the lead in the wild-card chase, we’ll extend our lead in the wild-card chase.
Seager hitting 6th, and LoMo 8th?
Whatever works.
Paul B, I actually like that Lloyd has been willing to shuffle the lineup based on match-ups. Not sure I’d really agree with moving Seager down, but I don’t think it’s a terrible decision. Just wish we had a better lefty-masher than Denorfia.
Happy Felix Day, fellow long-suffering M’s fans. Enjoy this reminder of what Mariner baseball is supposed to be (contextually speaking, anyway).
I hope Austin Jackson lights them up. Casper Wells isn’t around to do it, unfortunately.
I wonder how long they’re going to keep Condor down? His AAA numbers have been ridiculous.
The org can’t possibly think Denorfia/Chavez is a better option in RF than Saunders, can they? That would be rather silly…
I think the previous biggest start of his career, hype-wise, was probably that early ’07 win against Dice-K at peak hype in Fenway. I felt like most of the baseball world was watching that night. So in that sense this being the new biggest game of his career would be a step in the right direction. Yep, you were right, depressing line of reasoning.
That 1-2 pitch to Avila was a strike.
Felix is totally being squeezed.
This ump sucks.
Missed it, what happened with Lloyd? Seems like the ump is pinching Felix a bit… I heard him yell “Oh come on!” at the ump. Wow.
Lloyd objected to Felix getting squeezed by this lousy ump.
That, and a very late time out call in the 1st when Felix had already started his delivery.
Unfortunately umpires are human and don’t like to be shown up. It probably would’ve been better to let Zunino quietly make the case.
Is anyone watching Price’s zone to see if he’s getting squeezed too?
There was at least 1 ball that was right down the middle.
Tigers fans boo as Felix hits Cabrera. Because he obviously was intentionally hitting him with a 2 strike change up.
Ouch.
Thanks. I guessed that was it. Judging by Felix’s exclamation.
Felix just hit Cabrera with a screwball… I know it was really a changeup, but in slo mo that thing broke a foot towards the batter… Crazy…
Mariners fans would boo under similar circumstances, CM. 😉
Heck, I boo when our best hitter gets beaned, too, whether it was intentional or not. Bean Cano and I’ll boo, and tear up a little (especially if Hart or LoMo are up after him)…
Price has benefited from several generously wide strike calls.
I hope it was intentional.
Ump is hilarious… Just gave Felix a pitch 5 inches inside… And then down low… 2nd inning REAL strikes weren’t getting called.
Consistency is a mysterious lass…
Oh, I know fans of any team would boo when their player gets hit. It’s just one of those things I guess. Reminds me of when fans boo every pick off move. I understand it I guess, but don’t feel the need to do it myself.
Woo! A hit!
Cali-
I remember when Junior made his return to Seattle as a Red… Seattle fans were booing OUR PITCHERS if they threw a ball to Junior… And boo’ed when he got walked once.
It’s become a tradition to boo A-roid when he returned to Seattle.
I guess I should say it became.
A run! Off Price!
damnit.
Ugh. And the streak for Felix is over 🙁
I have a feeling that Felix will get him self tossed once he knows he’s coming out of the game.
Damn, tonight’s the night we need Kinsler to not be able to throw to first base… COME ON, Ian…
Price does this little foot dance right before he throws a pitch.
I imagine he has always done this, and I just never noticed before.
SOMEBODY in our dugout needs to be saying “take pitches”… “Take LOTS and LOTS of pitches…” We need to get to their bullpen. We win it in the last 2 innings.
It does appear as though the umpire’s strike zone changed. Maybe Lloyd got his attention.
Krueger getting animated about how the AL is harder to pitch in.
damnit, Tigers getting all the bounces tonight.
Taylor seems to make a lot of mistakes for someone that was labeled a “glove guy”. Seems to have a lot of potential out there but he needs to be much more consistent.
I like Taylor so far, but if he was hitting like Brad Miller he’d be getting ripped for his errors.
cmon! three misses in a row! by different players, getting really sloppy out there!
Why is Denorfia hitting ahead of Seager? These are the times when I really Question Lloyds lineups.
It’s most likely because Price is a lefty, Grayfox. I think Lloyd, like most managers, puts too much weight on matchups. If you remember earlier this year he always had Hart hit 4th in front of Seager when there a lefty was on the mound. I don’t agree with it, but I think as long as the other team is throwing a lefty Seager won’t hit higher than 5th. Hope I’m wrong though.
Why skip the cut off man Ackley….. he’s slower than crap.
Ball game.
At least the Royals lost.
You are exactly right, Cali.
Taylor has been surprisingly bad on defense, but he was always a high error guy in the minors, although those numbers seem to be discounted for “field condition” reasons. At least that is what I have heard.
Gotta make the routine plays at SS. It kills a team when they aren’t made.
Detroit is a good team and Price would be a tough matchup for the Mariners even on a good night. Nothing about tonight’s game is all that surprising, but Taylor’s consistent mishaps on defense are troubling.
Not sure if it’s more troubling than Jackson’s strikeouts – but we already knew that about him.
BRING BACK THE CONDOR!!
I thought he would have come along on the trip to Detroit, but he will be headed to Philadelphia if he has proven to be healthy playing in the outfield/throwing for a few games. Right?
There is no way the Denorfia/Chavez platoon is beating out that dude. No way. It’s just a matter of health. Right?
A winnable game slips thru our fingers again, we have to be able to win these types of games and not make these mental errors if we want this wild card spot.
AJ does strike out alot, and in situations where we need him to at least be a productive out.
I think Austin Jackson has just run into a streak of bad luck with the Mariners. His 2014 OBP is .325 overall – not a world beater by any means, but better than league average.
His plate discipline numbers aren’t bad… just be patient. He’ll regress upwards.
