Progress, of sorts
New version of the old template that works on the new version’s up and appears to be working. So everyone can stop throwing fits over the up-for-ten hours temporary version.
I’m still working on tweaking stuff out, and again — please don’t complain that anything’s not working until Sunday, which is my estimated time to complete slogging through all the really small issues remaining.
Though, in a happy coincidence, I seem to have broken commenting, which means you can’t complain about comments being broken. Maybe I’ll fix that last.
Read on if you’re curious about WordPress upgrade stuff, since I know some of you are. Warning: foul language ahead.
Upgrading from 1.2 to 1.5 — I highly recommend the Podz upgrade instructions as the default ones OMIT SUPER IMPORTANT STEPS THAT FUCK UP THE PROCESS.
I’m not kidding. I submitted an edit for the WP wiki on this, but it’s fucked up that they didn’t put that out there initially or, given the number of complaints about this in the support forums, at any point before this. In short, the big ‘gotcha’ is that if you don’t disable all your plugins before activating, you’re fucked. Which is lovely.
Other than that — it broke a loooot of shit on our site, and going through this is way fucking harder than their breezy “wheeeeeeeee, you’ve upgraded!” guide makes it sound like it’s going to be.
You would think, having worked in IT for seven-something years, that I would know better than to trust an optimistic setup document. That said, seven years of IT also got me to do regular site backups and keep detailed notes which helped immensely.
So short version — if you’re running a default WP install, knock yourself out. If you’re like me and you’ve been tinkering with shit, block off some time and take it slowly.

You SURE you want to subject yourself to dealing with comments right now?
Having worked in IT for 7-something years, you should have known better and built your own blogging app by now. It really isn’t THAT difficult, and you have TOTAL control over everything (because you have to design it).
Buy versus build, dude. Though that’s a whole other discussion, but I don’t have the time to build a blogging app given the other demands on me right now.
Well. It looks good. (Now I can say that, right?)
I must say I like having the poster names BEFORE the comment. “Responses” instead of comments is also nice.
I’ll get right on changing both of those. Thanks!
What if I said I like “offers” better?
DJC: Stop ignoring your site. It has a life too.
Cheers.
Don’t have time to do anything more than post 8 word posts.
And I made those “requests” after they had already been done. I am not trying to make DMZ’s life miserable just to make me happy. As far as I know, I am not paying him.
On a baseball related note, I am curious as to what the organizations sudden fascination is with Jon Huber? He recieved a spring training invite and keeps pitching in big games, and I’m not sure why…
Someone please smack Mr. Corcoran on the back of the head on my behalf.
I built my own blogging app, and it really wasn’t hard at all… i figure it took me less time than if I had tried to install something off the shelf. Plus it gives me full control and lets me improve the features I want improved. It took an initial outlay of about 1 weekends time to get the thing running, and about 1 weeknight of work a month to fix what ever bug crops up.
Re 9:
Did it myself.
Derek, thanks for the WP info.
Okey doke. I found hired help to slap me. DMZ, you owe a fellow by the name of Johnson $10. Mail the check to me.
If you’re still posting, it wasn’t hard enough. No deal.
From now on I am wearing a helmet.
