Moyer and Moves

JMB · March 30, 2005 at 12:57 pm · Filed Under Mariners

According to the Times, Jamie Moyer will start opening day.

Other moves of note:

  • IF Benji Gil was sold/assigned to Norfolk, AAA club of the Mets.
  • LHP Nate Bland was released.

It’s also decision day for the M’s with respect to Aaron Sele and Jeff Nelson either making the club or being granted their release. That announcement could come at any time, with the Times saying Nelson is probably in and that Sele is leading Ryan Franklin for the 5th starter job (despite Sele getting shelled yesterday).

Hargrove stated that both have made the club on the pre-game show today.

Any way to tell how much Benji Gil was sold for?

    3. Dave on March 30th, 2005 1:07 pm

An insignificant amount. Seriously, it doesn’t matter at all.

Nelson and Sele made the team a long time ago. The announcement is a foregone conclusion.

    4. Troy on March 30th, 2005 1:10 pm

      Nelson? *Sigh*

    5. PositivePaul on March 30th, 2005 1:10 pm

Maybe Anaheim will take Spiezio back — they just sent McPherson to the minors.

    6. Kirk Hammett on March 30th, 2005 1:19 pm

      Wait..what?

What on earth made them decide to send down dallas?

    7. dirk on March 30th, 2005 1:20 pm

      He’s hurt.

    8. Dave on March 30th, 2005 1:20 pm

      He’s hurt.

    9. Dash on March 30th, 2005 1:24 pm

Well there goes that fantasy draft pick.

Reading in the paper today both Nelson and Sele that all they had to do was prove to the club that they were healthy. Implying that as long as they weren’t hurt and didn’t get hurt that they were in.

    10. Troy on March 30th, 2005 2:00 pm

Okay, so who gets bumped off the 40 man for Sele and Nelson?

    11. David J Corcoran on March 30th, 2005 2:06 pm

      My money is on:
      Soriano to 60-DL, Atchison/Jacobsen to 60-DL

    12. Aaron on March 30th, 2005 2:06 pm

Soriano can still be moved to the 60-day DL, right? That’s one.
Maybe Thornton gets waived to make room for Sherrill on the 25 and open another spot on the 40?

    13. Jon Wells on March 30th, 2005 2:07 pm

Soriano can be put on the 60 day DL to make room for one spot. Another one could also be a 60 day DL move (Bucky, Atchison or ???)

Matt Riley has been traded from Baltimore to Texas — a quick glance at some of the things Riley has done should give us a good indication why the M’s didn’t deal for him.

      ESPN.com
The list of Riley’s misdeeds is far more extensive than his accomplishments. He’s been late for practice, ignored his coaches, and in 2000 was arrested for participating in a bar fight. As recently as last July, he betrayed the trust of the team by driving home to Baltimore after being sent to Philadelphia early to rest up for a starting assignment.

      Re #2 & 3

Just curious mainly…do the Mets agree to buy Bavasi dinner one night when they’re in town or what?

    16. Evan on March 30th, 2005 3:09 pm

I’m convinced GMs engage in these sorts of deals (harmless minor-leaguers for minimal cash) primarily to build good will with the other GMs. The other guy needs him more than you do, but it’s not the sort of thing that’s going to make or break his team.

#16- and FWIW, I imagine word goes around among players if your organization builds a rep as one that will try to do something for a player, like Terry Mulholland to the Twins, Mike Myers to Boston, etc.

    19. Pilots fan on March 30th, 2005 3:47 pm

OK, so when Joel comes off of the DL, we’ll have 13 pitchers. Looks like we’ll have to make a move with one of the relievers at that point. If Sherrill makes the team, he can be sent down, but I believe it is looking like Thornton is going to get a 2-week look. Do you all agree, or are there other likely scenarios?

    20. Evan on March 30th, 2005 3:54 pm

I think you’re right. We use Thornton for two weeks to see if we can pump up his trade value (maybe get him a sick line in 5 IP), and then DFA him when Pineiro comes back.

    21. David J Corcoran on March 30th, 2005 4:01 pm

      Re 16: I think you’re right.

Re 17: Somebody called me a genius. There’s a new one.

      Re 19:
      Here’s my bullpen theory:

Franklin,Shiggy, Putz, Eddie, Villone=with club all season. In bullpen all season.

Mateo- Opens in Tacoma, rides Seattle shuttle a few times. Arrives for good in Seattle when Nelson is DFAd.

Sherrill=Opens in Seattle, rides TAcoma shuttle a couple times. Comes back for good in July.

      Thornton- Over/Under on DFA/trade: May 15th.

Nelson- Over/Under on DFA: June 17th

    22. Ralph Malph on March 30th, 2005 4:03 pm

So basically they’re going to try with Thornton what worked so well last year with Jarvis.

    23. David J Corcoran on March 30th, 2005 4:05 pm

      Re 22:

Yup. And ironically, Jarvis was DFA’d last year to make room for…..Matt Thornton.

    24. David J Corcoran on March 30th, 2005 4:13 pm

And Rule V[sic] Kid hits a game winning, pinch-hit home run.

    25. Ralph Malph on March 30th, 2005 4:23 pm

Jarvis is having a better spring with the Cardinals than Thornton is with the M’s.

      Though that’s not saying much.

    26. eponymous coward on March 30th, 2005 5:04 pm

Maybe we can work out a trade. LaRussa LOVES his LOOGY pitchers…

    27. David J Corcoran on March 30th, 2005 5:05 pm

      Re 25:

Cards are having an interesting spring with relievers… They opened ST with three relief pitchers that played in the Mariners org last year. Pulsipher beat out Myers, which, although Myers stinks, is still amazing. Bill Pulsipher. I mean, Bill Pulsipher. He is probably the last guy I expected to see make a comeback. If Jarvis and Myers had made the Cards roster though, I would have laughed really hard.

    28. Grizz on March 30th, 2005 5:19 pm

Taking Mr. Corcoran’s over/under idea one step farther, it is unsettling to realize the staff’s safest bet to make it through the entire season avoiding the DL, the minors, or the DFA tag is Ron Villone (thanks to that two-year contract).

    29. Ralph Malph on March 30th, 2005 5:24 pm

By the way, apropos of Bill Pulsipher, Jeff Fassero is still in camp as an NRI with the Giants. He is 2-0, 2.25 on the spring.

Fassero would fit right in with the Giants.

    30. dw on March 30th, 2005 6:26 pm

It’s interesting how these lifetime AAAA players, creaking LOOGY and six-innings-a-game arms, and immortal first basemen with weird batting stances continue to get major league work. It almost seems shocking that Galarraga is choosing retirement over the 25th spot on the Mets roster.

I think most of it is expansion diluting the talent pool, but it does seem that there’s more longevity in careers thanks to improved conditioning.

    31. Jim Thomsen on March 30th, 2005 6:27 pm

Well, looks like Sherrill’s a goner. Sheesh.

    32. jc on March 30th, 2005 7:34 pm

Oh by the way kerfeld signed puhlsipher for the mariners last year……..man that dude knows pitching out of the indys….

    33. David J Corcoran on March 30th, 2005 8:00 pm

      Re 32:

While I am thrilled that Pulsipher is getting another chance and am nothing but supportive of his making the roster, only time will tell if he got it back. It could just be flukey-spring training-ness.

    34. JPWood on March 31st, 2005 2:32 am

The FO failing to officially announce the Nelson and Sele signings indicates that Bavasi will be taking a 24-hour look at the waiver list for last-minute possibilities before he sets up the final 25/40. I haven’t seen the list yet, but would be curious about any LHP that might show up.

    35. Slooz on March 31st, 2005 4:57 am

What happened to Reichert? I have been away for a while and just did a search but found nothing recent. Obviously he did not make the team(?)

    36. DMZ on March 31st, 2005 5:13 am

I think most of it is expansion diluting the talent pool, but it does seem that there’s more longevity in careers thanks to improved conditioning.

Expansion, taken historically, did nothing to dilute the talent pool.

    37. Allen Jacobs on March 31st, 2005 5:19 am

How sad is it that Sele and Nelson are back on our roster? The M’s have gone from one of the top pitching teams 2-3 yrs ago to a retirement community for PNW hurlers. I find it even more sad that the “strong” minor league pitching depth has evaporated so quickly. Here’s to scoring a lot runs this summer.

    38. Pat on March 31st, 2005 6:26 am

36 – Derek, does the argument about this compare the expansion in roster spots against the population of the talent pool?

    39. David J Corcoran on March 31st, 2005 6:42 am

Re 35: He’s still around. I expect him to be reassigned in the next day or two.

Also, Big Ben Davis was outrighted today. Haha.

    40. jc on March 31st, 2005 8:24 am

33 it proably is flukyness at its best but the point is my guy found him in indys and had the mariners sign him when no one else did….Are we allowed to be fans of scoutsI still wonder if kerfeld weres them cokebottle glasses with the black rims are the flintstones shirt????

    41. Evan on March 31st, 2005 2:50 pm

      38 – Yes.
