Movin’
You’ll notice a new author link on the left nav… Derek alluded to this in the past, but now I’m ready for the announcement. In a few weeks I’ll be moving (along with my wife and son) to New York to attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park (about 90 minutes north of New York city). I’ll still post when I can, and of course will keep the Big Board updated as well.
No, this isn’t an April Fools joke. Yes, this is the first time in my life when I’ll be living someplace other than Seattle, and that bums me out. But attending the CIA is a great opportunity for me professionally, and we fully plan on returning to Seattle when I’m done with the program.
And if anyone wants to buy my car — which I love, but we’re only taking one car with us — it’s up on craigslist.

Congrats, Jason!
I went to Bard and drove past the CIA a lot whenever I went to Poughkeepsie.
Good luck.
auto insurance costs out there suck. prepay your seattle auto policy and forget to change your address.
seriously.
also, hate the yankees.
cheers!
No kidding on insurance. We’re looking at roughly double what we’re paying now with Pemco (who has always been great, but unfortunately doesn’t cover NY). I’m afraid to use your tactic, though, because NY state seems pretty strict about their insurance laws (like they’ll impound your car and take your license if you get stopped without insurance, or something like that).

As a graduate of the L’Ecole Ferrandi in Paris (service side), I say Good for you and Good Luck to you. The restaurant life is a hard life, but a beautiful life. If baseball occupies less of your time for awhile or less of your mind, that isn’t bad thing…
That said, I second the motion from #3: Hate the Yankees.
Mucho congrats, Jason. I’ve flirted with cooking school for a while but just can’t see myself spending 16 hour days in the kitchen.
And hey, you’re only six hours from Cooperstown….
Congrats! I have a friend who went there seven years ago and now working at Herbs Farm. Best wishes for you and your family, Jason.
I lived in NYC for three years on pizza (Dani’s in Kew Gardens Queens) and Black and White Cookies, enjoy and hate the Yankees.
I’ve eaten at the CIA a couple of times, and it’s amazing. Beautiful area as well. Congratulations!
I understand your concerns about the unnecessarily strict NY cops. If you try and get your vechile liscensed out there then you’ll need to prove local insurance before you can get anywhere, etc. I just kept my WA liscense plates on the car and kept current with everything (except for out here, not out there). My plan was basically to ask forgiveness not permission, should I have been pulled over for a taillight or whatever. you can always say you just moved there, some random cop might let you get away with it as long as you’re not rude to him/her.
or not.
also, in NY, its just easier to get some things done if you bribe. remember that. also, fyi, bribing is completely legal as long as the dude you’re trying to buy off doesn’t work for the government.
congrats!
I assume that you have a dog-eared copy of Kitchen Confidential and a thick skin. Bon appetit.
Not even six hours from Cooperstown — mapquest says a mere three (or maybe you were thinking round trip). We may stop on our way out there, or at the very least, visit when I get three weeks off in July.

Hey I was wondering if MLB teams have to pay a fee to league and/or other team for the player? Or just start paying his salary whenever they get him? Thanks for the info.
Yeah, I was probably thinking round-trip — or muddled the distance with the Buffalo-NYC distance.
We drove from Philly to Cooperstown in 2002. That was about six hours. Beautiful country all the way up, at least once we got into the hills.
If you go, go on the way, not in July. Most of the exhibits are closed still, but this time of year you’ll be one of a couple dozen in the museum, versus one of a couple thousand on a July day.
Good luck, Jason. Make sure you let us know when you get back to Seattle and open your M’s-themed, wine-stocked, gourmand restaraunt. We’ll be there – expecting discounts, natch. 🙂
Welcome to the Hudson Valley, Jason. We’ll be neighbors. Well, kind of. The Poughkeepsie area takes some getting used to, but Hyde Park is a nice town. Best of luck to you, and perhaps I’ll run into you when I have my graduation dinner at the CIA next fall 🙂
Jon — are you graduating from the CIA, or graduating elsewhere but eating at the CIA when you do? My wife and I were there about a month ago, and yeah, I called Poughkeepsie the town that time forgot. Apparently the ToP is nicer than the CoP, but we never made it in that far. We’ll be living in Pleasant Valley, which seems, well, pleasant. Hyde Park reminds me a bit of the town of Snohomish.

Welcome to New York, Jason! Maybe we can organize a New York-based Ussmariner trip to a Yankees game when the Mariners come to town…
Great, so you can join my step-sister in making sure Yankee fans are shot down in their own state. Wink wink.
Congrats.
I went to Cooperstown a couple of years ago for the induction ceremony–just to hear Bob Uecker’s speech (he didn’t disappoint). It was busy, of course, but really not that bad. I know Peter Gammons will be honored this year in addition to Boggs and Sandberg, so you might want to consider heading up for that. If you have any interest in any of the inductees, it’s worth it.
