Game 10, Mariners at White Sox

If you think Mike Hargrove has made some questionable managerial decisions to start the season, I’ve got just one sentence for you. Think of Michael Buffer when I say:

As a sidenote: does it say more about me or about Alex Rodriguez that, when I see the headline “A-Rod yanks 8-year-old-boy from path of truck,” I think “P.R. set-up.”

The last time I watched a Mariners game with a fellow fan was over four years ago… I like this site.
It bears repeating:

Let us look at the bright side. The bench can only improve. For example, when Jacobsen gets off the disabled list, he will be available to pinch hit for Spiezio (or better yet, to play instead of Spiezio). When Pokey gets off the DL, Valdez would be available off the bench (assuming the Mariners don’t release him).
I sincerely hope that by June we do not have a bench consisting of Wilson and four third basemen (Spiezio, Leone, Dobbs, Bloomquist).
I think even a Chris Snelling who can’t play so much D now would be better than what’s on the bench for pinch hitting. Well, the pain is subsiding. Good night all.

BDA, right now we have the worst bench in baseball. Possibly the worst bench in the history of the game. Of course it can only get better. The bad news is it would have to get considerably better to even get to the point where all you can say about them is they suck.

Why not pinch hit Spiezio with Sexson?? Don’t know how sick he is. Even though he is so sick that can’t play the game, one at-bat wouldn’t be too bad?? Hmm… I can’t answer that because I have no information.
Agree on the bench. Need another respectable hitter there, and carry one less pitcher!!!
I was going to argue that the 2005 Mariners bench is not worse than the bench of the 1962 New York Mets. However, the statistics do not appear support that. The three bench players with the most at bats on the 1962 Mets were Rod Kanehl (.248, .296, .322), Joe Christopher (.244,.338, .362) and Gene Woodling (.274, .353, .405). The current Mariners bench is unlikely to match the bench performance of the worst baseball team in history. That is truly scary.

apparently Hargrove did have that thought, but by that time Sexson was laid out in the trainers room with a 100+ fever, so he left him there…
did anyone else notice all those shots of Joel on the bench, obviously NOT icing his arm after coming out of the game?
Perhaps this is a sign of why our pitchers keep breaking down. What the heck are Rick Griffin/Brian Price/et al thinking?
I have a hunch Joel iced his arm at some point last night, he just wanted to see if his teammates could get back into the ballgame. If Sexson was in the clubhouse last night, he should have hit in the ninth. I know that the fever and the flu are no fun, put on a damn turtleneck, pop some DayQuil and let Spazio stay in the dugout come the ninth. At least Dobber swung.
