Reese, Wilson news

Reese went in for his second opinion with Dr. James Andrews and ended up having surgery. 4-8 weeks is the word.
Wilson’s scheduled to go under the knife on the 20th for his ACL. And then… I guess we’ll see. If he’s back this season it’d be good.

Am I the only one that thinks Lopez is going to Wally Pipp Pokey? I don’t think Pez is going to light the world on fire this year, but in comparison to Valdez and Pokey his decent bat will probably look pretty sweet. I have a feeling we will be offensive minded at short from June through September. The big question is will the M’s still do the right thing and move Jose to second base next season? Their status quo fetish scares me.
Reese, Wilson, ….ahhh, who cares?
If the straw breaks the camel’s back, this isn’t even as heavy as that. M’s have woeful offense right now, what would Reese or Wilson do for that?

I bet on the wrong M’s catcher to get injured. Wilson is on my HACKING MASS team.
So is Pokey. I’m getting killed.
Let’s see, Pokey’s shoulder started hurting about, what, 8 weeks ago? If we’d had a sound medical decision back then, we would soon know how much contribution Pokey could make to this season, wouldn’t we? Just a thought.
shoulders are hard to diagnose. just a thought.
Re: (# 1) WALLY PIPPING – BTW, you’re not the only one that thinks that. There’s a guy in Steilacoom that thinks the same thing.
🙂
Seriously though, it’s a good thing that “No one loses his job because of injury” was not the policy in LOU GEHRIG’s day, and let’s hope it’s not the policy now.

Are you questioning the fine diagnosticians in the Mariners organization?
#6 – so, following your logic, they should have waited another 8 weeks instead of going with the surgery now??
FWIW, it’d be nice to see Dan Wilson DH the last game of the year, then he could retire following the season; the M’s could have a celebration for him, too.
The one nice thing about having Calvin “Pokey” Reese out of action is that it might prevent him from reaching certain incentive clauses in his contract.
#9–No, just that in any organization, in any sport, in every day life, shoulder injuries often take time to get diagnosed. The symptoms of lesser injuries are the same as more severe injuries, and sometimes the the extent of damage isn’t made until the shoulder is actually opened up. They are a remarkable, and remarkably complex construction, which is why doctors (and not just the Mariner doctors) do not jump to surgery as the first option.
What we know is that Reese complained of soreness, came out of a game, they listened, they rested him, they rehabbed him, he said it was getting better, it wasn’t, they did an MRI. 9 days. The MRI showed a strain. He rested, he rehabbed, he said it was getting better, it didn’t. He had a 2nd exam, the AC injury was diagnosed. That was April 26th. Reese decided he wanted a 2nd opinion, and didn’t get in to see Andrews until May 4th, where he was given the same diagnosis, and had surgery the next day.
FWIW, AC joint surgery is usually in response to arthritic damage to the joint, or to a trauma due to a separation of the joint or a blow to it — in athletes usually by falling on the point of the shoulder, or onto their arm, jarring the joint. Klesko, for example, was diagnosed this spring with early signs of arthritis in his left AC joint, unlike his right AC which was damaged & repaired in that lay-out catch that separated his shoulder so badly two years ago.
Okay, maybe this is in poor taste, but I told you guys. I said that Pokey’s fun to watch but amazingly fragile. And here you are. If the M’s didn’t think there was a very good chance of this or something just as debilitating happening, they’re dopes.
James T, I’m sure the M’s were prepared for this. I don’t think they anticipated Lopez being out of commission though. Hence, Wilson Valdez.
I don’t think anyone here is much surprised with Pokey’s injury. Or in the front office for that matter. Everyone knew the risk going in, but for $900k, the potential reward was worth the high risk. Even if Pokey doesn’t play a day, the signing was still a prudent use of the M’s bankroll.
John D – you know that Gehrig took himself out of the lineup, right?
#14– I think what John was saying was that it was a good thing for baseball that Wally Pipp didn’t automatically get the job back at first base after his day off… FWIW, Snopes.com has an interesting discussion about Wally being Pipped as urban legend at:
