Game 51, Blue Jays at Mariners
Hi folks, Jason here with your game thread for the last day of May.
Chad Gaudin, making his 2005 debut, vs. Ryan Franklin. 7:05pm, FSN and KOMO.
Gaudin’s just a kid, having made his MLB debut at 20 years of age back in 2003 with the Devil Rays. Tampa Bay traded him to Toronto this winter for C Kevin Cash. He’s also a short (5-11) righty, and you know how tools-oriented teams hate those, whereas the Blue Jays have no such hangup. Gaudin was 3-2, 2.48 ERA with a 47:14 K:BB ratio in 65.1 innings at AAA Syracuse before getting the call. He’s perhaps best known for having tossed a perfecto in the minors two years ago.
Franklin you know; I’ll spare you the details. Of more interest are new SS Mike Morse and C Rene Rivera, whom few of us dreamed would be in the lineup at the same time (at least this soon). Those who did — were they good dreams, or bad? Oh, and Wilson Valdez got the ol’ DFA to make room for Morse.
Enjoy the game and play nice; the wife’s sick, the kid’s sick, there’s homework to do and then I’m off to bed.

Ichiro, an uncharacterstic 0-3 with RISP today. So the bottom of the order did most of the producing tonight — when will we hear that again? I hereby switch the gameball from Rivera to Reed, although Rivera is a close second.

I wonder if things would have turned out different if Mateo pitched 3 instead 4. I imagine he must of been tired by the time he was pitching his 4th inning. Oh well. There is always tomorrow for more fun and hilarity on FSN. Tune in next time.
And the patsies from FSN are not sawing word #1 about how Hargrove threw in the damn towel putting scrubs in the lineup too soon.
Contrast this with the NESN analysis after the Red Sox lost to NY on Friday. NESN is literally owned by the Red Sox, but their in-studio analyst ripped into Terry Francona for letting the game get away from him by letting Alan Embree face Gary Sheffield.
FSN, on the other hand, is of the “speak no evil†school of analysis: Rookie catcher got some hits! Morse looks like A-Rod!

Over the last three years, Ichiro has consistently hit worse with men on first or on first and second, worse than in almost any situation.

Ichiro hit .276 for May. I love, love, love Ichiro, but when he hits .276, he’s pretty much a useless hitter.

We can lament that the scrubs were playing late in the game when it got close but please don’t forget that it would not have gotten close if we left the original line up in. Remember it was 9-2 when the millionaires left the field?
#341: It wasn’t the scrubs for the M’s uniforms that triggered the rally, it was the Toronto pitching (Speier and Schoeneweis). Note that once Batista came into the game, the M’s only got one more hit.
And there will be no momentum going into tomorrow’s game; the definition of momentum in baseball is tomorrow’s starting pitcher.
I wish I could get a TV feed with just crownd noise and no commentary, and then the postgame interviews without the analysis from FSN.

That was a pretty brutal game to attend: gut-punched early, followed by a series of jabs, and then right at the end, I started to hope they might pull it off… not so much. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.
