Game 51, Blue Jays at Mariners

JMB · May 31, 2005 at 5:52 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

Hi folks, Jason here with your game thread for the last day of May.

Chad Gaudin, making his 2005 debut, vs. Ryan Franklin. 7:05pm, FSN and KOMO.

Gaudin’s just a kid, having made his MLB debut at 20 years of age back in 2003 with the Devil Rays. Tampa Bay traded him to Toronto this winter for C Kevin Cash. He’s also a short (5-11) righty, and you know how tools-oriented teams hate those, whereas the Blue Jays have no such hangup. Gaudin was 3-2, 2.48 ERA with a 47:14 K:BB ratio in 65.1 innings at AAA Syracuse before getting the call. He’s perhaps best known for having tossed a perfecto in the minors two years ago.

Franklin you know; I’ll spare you the details. Of more interest are new SS Mike Morse and C Rene Rivera, whom few of us dreamed would be in the lineup at the same time (at least this soon). Those who did — were they good dreams, or bad? Oh, and Wilson Valdez got the ol’ DFA to make room for Morse.

Enjoy the game and play nice; the wife’s sick, the kid’s sick, there’s homework to do and then I’m off to bed.

ah, dammit, guys don’t *do* this to me. I can stand to lose. I just can’t stand to have my hopes shattered again.

    WTF?

  3. Fairly Obvious Facts on May 31st, 2005 9:55 pm

This game’s not over- there are three outs left.

  4. LB on May 31st, 2005 9:57 pm

#296: If Schoeneweis were good, he’d still be in an Angels uniform.

  5. Harry on May 31st, 2005 9:57 pm

Hey, Beltre got a couple RBI tonight; give him a break, he’ll come around.

The amazing thing is that there’s a molecule of interest in this game now.

  6. Jim Thomsen on May 31st, 2005 9:58 pm

What exactly did Bloomie do? I was working and missed it.

  7. Harry on May 31st, 2005 9:59 pm

    2 RBI double to center

  8. Jeremy on May 31st, 2005 9:59 pm

    #306 Jim,

Willie hit a double, scoring 2.

That’s front page material right there, heh.

how long does a guy who
a.)had his only good year in his contract year
    b.) got a huge contract
c.)seems less and less interested in trying with every passing game
    get?

  10. LB on May 31st, 2005 10:00 pm

And Ichiro pads his stats with a meaningless RBI.

What is this, a planet where apes evolved from men?

  12. Harry on May 31st, 2005 10:01 pm

Well, Franklin got his run support tonight, the whining little git.

    Smooth move, Grover. Ya moron.

    damn

  17. LB on May 31st, 2005 10:02 pm

But they never, ever, ever gave up! (Except when Grover put in the scrubs.)

  18. John in L.A. on May 31st, 2005 10:02 pm

    Great run at the end.

Great humiliation that we have to have FREAKING DOBBS at bat in a late/critical situation.

Bavasi should be seriously, seriously ashamed of himself.

  19. ray on May 31st, 2005 10:02 pm

Ichiro, an uncharacterstic 0-3 with RISP today. So the bottom of the order did most of the producing tonight — when will we hear that again? I hereby switch the gameball from Rivera to Reed, although Rivera is a close second.

  20. Dave in minnie on May 31st, 2005 10:03 pm

was there NO ONE on the bench?
    i mean no one?
    pat borders?

  21. Drew on May 31st, 2005 10:04 pm

Oh man true dat… even though lucky as a 16 year sneaking into his first strip club reed has been on fire of late

  22. Dave in Palo Alto on May 31st, 2005 10:04 pm

Dobbsie snuffed out two good looking rallies in the late innings. You would think he, rather than Morse, went in for Boone.

  23. LB on May 31st, 2005 10:04 pm

I despise “Talk about X” as an interview “question.”

  24. ray on May 31st, 2005 10:04 pm

Dobbs and Hansen are fighting Olivo for the Mr. Mendoza title.

the aflac duck is developing too much personality. its becoming the new “noid”

  28. ray on May 31st, 2005 10:08 pm

I bet Grover feels like Homer after replacing so many guys — Doh!

    Rick Rizz needs a fluffer.

  30. G-Man on May 31st, 2005 10:09 pm

Sportsline.com still has Wilson Valdez on the M’s bench. Tell Hargrove so he can put him in the game.

  31. Jeremy on May 31st, 2005 10:10 pm

“A False Hope”, only at Safeco Field.

    See it this summer.

  32. ray on May 31st, 2005 10:11 pm

I wonder if things would have turned out different if Mateo pitched 3 instead 4. I imagine he must of been tired by the time he was pitching his 4th inning. Oh well. There is always tomorrow for more fun and hilarity on FSN. Tune in next time.

  33. LB on May 31st, 2005 10:12 pm

And the patsies from FSN are not sawing word #1 about how Hargrove threw in the damn towel putting scrubs in the lineup too soon.

Contrast this with the NESN analysis after the Red Sox lost to NY on Friday. NESN is literally owned by the Red Sox, but their in-studio analyst ripped into Terry Francona for letting the game get away from him by letting Alan Embree face Gary Sheffield.

FSN, on the other hand, is of the “speak no evil” school of analysis: Rookie catcher got some hits! Morse looks like A-Rod!

  34. Dave in minnie on May 31st, 2005 10:12 pm

good night kids. if you have a bad dream about greg dobbs, just think happy thoughts about…….. scott spezio

  35. Dave in minnie on May 31st, 2005 10:15 pm

ps if you have mlb extra innings, the LA CHI game is in the tenth and its already a classic

  36. G-Man on May 31st, 2005 10:16 pm

LB (333), yes, that’s the way they do it. I grew up near Boston, and the difference is profound. I call the Seattle way “Where Seldom Is Heard A Discouraging Word.”

Recently, I did hear Rizzs criticize a Mariner, though. Maybe there’s hope.

  37. LB on May 31st, 2005 10:21 pm

Grover: I’m proud of our scrubs; they made a game of it!

  38. Mords on May 31st, 2005 10:22 pm

336- For someone with a penchant for stating the obvious, you’d think he’d criticize them more often.

Strange Ichiro stat (BA): .182 Runner on 1B & 2B, .125 Runner on 1B; You’d think with the hole on the right infield he’d have an advantage but it’s not.

I think that’s small sample size. Typically he’s been helped quite a bit by runners on, in previous years. I think last year was a little iffy, but before that he put up massive numbers with guys on.

Over the last three years, Ichiro has consistently hit worse with men on first or on first and second, worse than in almost any situation.

    check it out:

Ichiro hit .276 for May. I love, love, love Ichiro, but when he hits .276, he’s pretty much a useless hitter.

  41. Russ on May 31st, 2005 10:38 pm

We can lament that the scrubs were playing late in the game when it got close but please don’t forget that it would not have gotten close if we left the original line up in. Remember it was 9-2 when the millionaires left the field?

  42. LB on May 31st, 2005 10:49 pm

#341: It wasn’t the scrubs for the M’s uniforms that triggered the rally, it was the Toronto pitching (Speier and Schoeneweis). Note that once Batista came into the game, the M’s only got one more hit.

And there will be no momentum going into tomorrow’s game; the definition of momentum in baseball is tomorrow’s starting pitcher.

I wish I could get a TV feed with just crownd noise and no commentary, and then the postgame interviews without the analysis from FSN.

That was a pretty brutal game to attend: gut-punched early, followed by a series of jabs, and then right at the end, I started to hope they might pull it off… not so much. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

  45. Doug Taylor on May 31st, 2005 11:05 pm

I wasn’t listening to the postgame…Bavasi have anything interesting to say?

  46. dw on June 1st, 2005 12:52 am

We stopped calling Boone “Rally Killer.” We refer to it as “Rally Genocide.”

  47. Hmmm on June 1st, 2005 7:05 am

What is ‘geno’ adding? Why not just “Rallicide”?

  48. Evan on June 1st, 2005 9:53 am

Why is there a separate Canadian broadcast?

Since the Canadian government says we’re not allowed to watch FSN, the Jays’ broadcast is all we get.
