Game 63, Phillies at Mariners

RHP Vincente Padilla v RHP Aaron Sele. 7:05, FSN.
20,000 tickets remain for tomorrow’s game. Wow. I was at last night’s game, and there were not a lot of people there. Interestingly, the Mets series is going to sell out entirely. So much for the inherent magic of interleague play.
Beltre is out again with his “grade one” hamstring strain. Hansen gets the start at third. Now, I’m no rocket scientist, but Hansen is the backup 3B? Not Dobbs or Bloomquist? I’m a little baffled at this. Hansen’s skills at the hot corner are… limited?

Time to flip Sele for a B- prospect. Hey, do you guys think Helling could catch lightning too, for a double-flip? Is his arm still full of splinters?
Mr. Morse, you’ve been pied.
I doubt the fan wants a ball signed by Morse…
Check this out:
HR: [Doyle] (7, 9th inning off Baker, 3 on, 1 out)
(Tied the game at 5. Still underway, going to the 10th. Must be a fun night for the folks at Cheney.)
Well, that was interesting….Another series win against a decent team.
Not sure that this is THAT significant…like Morse’s hitting, I don’t think it’s as good as it seems….both will settle down soon enough….but a win’s a win…..and they’re enjoyable as they unfold….
Now 10-4 when Borders starts.
so when does morse’s AB sample size get big enough to get interesting?
50AB? 100AB? 200?
I thought he was the ‘throw-away’ part of that freddy deal?
I dunno.
Another win for Aaron “of no value to the team” Sele. Once again FACE!!! Freddy Garcia’s ERA = 3.78 Sele’s = 3.79. both with 6 wins. I’m thinking All Star. Cy Young anyone….???
Last year we would have thought that Blackely, Nageotte and Lopez would be the stud-callups. Instead Madritsch and Bucky were (and Atchison to a lesser extent).
Maybe this year Morse and Rivera will be the surprises.
What the hell happens at catcher when Wiki is healthy and Olivo gets his head on straight? Hard to send down a guy hitting over .400.
re 108
You mean PLEASANT surprises. We could do with much fewer unpleasant ones….
I’m thinking that the stock is getting pretty high on Morse right now. What teams are looking for a shortstop? Could we get anything prospect-ish in return?
106
His sample size at AAA is much larger than here. Either he’s A-Rod (wonder why A-Rod, of all SSs, popped into my head ;-)) got bored down there and stopped hitting to prove a point or he really isn’t .400 good… take your pick.
A stat I doubt you’ll see in any Seattle propaganda piece, but according to Yahoo! (not to be confused with Ichiro!), the Mariners have been held hitless in their last 25 opportunities with runners in scoring position. I am ashamed.
Well, in the last month Aaron Sele’s been in 6 games, pitched 40.1 innings, and is 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA. I have absolutely no complaints about that, even if his other numbers (the 10 walks and 18 strikeouts) could be a little better.
It was Jeremy Reed’s birthday today!
Re #85 — Abreu was 3-for-3 today with the only RBI for the Phillies. Burrell and Thome after him made me very sad, though.
Okay, okay, not to dig this back up, but my response way back when wasn’t rude. I don’t understand why it’s rude to tell someone to go look something up, especially when it’s easier for them to look it up than *to type the comment asking other people to do that work for them*.
If anything, it strikes me that that kind of laziness — especially when in subsequent posts the person indicates that they *knew where they could find it* and thus that it was only a couple of clicks — is far, far ruder than a suggestion that someone should help themselves.
And having said that, if someone could just deliver assorted Redhook beers to my house while I finish writing the Giants pitcher thing…
Derek — Actually, there are 10,000 tickets available for Friday’s game so it’s doubtful that’ll be a sellout. They have around 1,000 tickets for Saturday and the same Sunday so they should be sellouts or near-sellouts.
(looking it up again)
Hey yeah, you’re right. I was just looking at Saturday on.
the Mariners have been held hitless in their last 25 opportunities with runners in scoring position.
And Brett “LOB” Boone must be responsible for about half of them.
#114 – He wasn’t asking other people to look it up, he was asking other people who knew without looking it up to tell him what it was. He assumed that at least one of the people mentioning the stat knew what it meant. So no, he wasn’t rude. You were rude by responding in that way to his very reasonable request.
Again, that request requires:
– typing a comment that takes at least as much effort as looking it up and
– someone else to spend their time replying and provide an explanation
Even if the intent is “I’m lazy, does anyone have it handy” it’s like paging someone to come over and pour the beer on my desk into my mouth for me.
Why is calling someone out on that rude? It’s not like there’s some insult about their appearance or something.
I think it was the gratuitous “are your fingers broken” comment.
You could have made your (entirely valid) point without it.
The best part of getting data for yourself is that you’ll learn auxillary facts while doing so.
It is odd to me that many will parse through the data provided my DMZ and others, disagree with a conclusion, argue a odd point without having done the work themselves and also be put out when reminded they too could go look it up and draw their own conclusions.
If I don’t agree with a conclusion or wonder how the conclusion was drawn, I go look up data to see what the facts say. I don’t go asking others to verify my doubts. (can doubts be verified?)
I don’t think asking someone to do their own homework is rude no matter how it is asked. Furthermore if you read tone into words typed on a screen, the onus is on the reader to interpet the tone, the writer cannot decide for the reader how to “take it”.
total change of subject, but with all this Morse/A-Rod comparison going on, i’d point out that in fact, he reminds me alot more of Jeter in the short time i’ve seen him than of A-Rod, especially his swing: inside-out, alot of his hits to right field. actually, i got the clip of his homer last night of the M’s site, and watched it in slomo…the way he turned on it looked alot like a Jeter homerun swing. I doubt Morse will ever look quite so polished that people totally overlook his lack of range (like Jeter) but he may end up being a similar player…maybe a bit less average and speed for a bit more power. Morse just might suprise us all and become a solid major leaguer, but we’ll have to wait and see. anyways, just an interesting thought
Jeter’s one of the best offensive shortstops ever, and he’s almost certainly compiled a hall of fame career.
Mike Morse is a borderline major league player.
There’s no comparison, and there’s no way Morse has a Jeter like career.
Mike Morse–can you say Andy Sheets? Who knows maybe he will be a servisable major leaguer but if he does it will be another example of how wrong our scouting department can be on a player. No one has expected anything of him. Now we’re comparing him to Jeter or ARod–please. Let’s not reserve the Hall of Fame plaque just yet, o.k. ?
whoa..what i’m saying is that A-Rod is not even worth trying to compare him too…he’s probably the most gifted athlete to ever play the game of baseball…a guy who’s in the 40-40 club, is big and unquestionably has the speed to play one of the more, if not the most, challenging position on the diamond…there’s no one to compare him too. they will never be anyone like him in baseball, even if there maybe some with a similar level of talent (Mays, Griffey, and current players like Pujols)
Jeter is probably well above Morse’s head too, i’m just saying IF you were going to compare him to one of the current All-star SS, Jeter is a better comparison than A-Rod.
Jeter’s carreer averages projected over a 162 game season:
AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG TB SH SF IBB HBP GDP
654 123 206 34 5 18 82 24 6 66 115 .315 .385 .463 303 6 4 2 11 14
Morse is certainly not a guy who will most likely score 125 runs or steal 25 bases in a season..he probably won’t hit near .300 either (i’m thinking he tops out at .290, best case scenario) or gets on base at a .385 clip, even if some of the patience he’s been showing recently is the real deal. But he’s got a shot to be a 35 double, 20 homer guy who’ll drive in 85 a season for you, which isn’t a bad player. I’m not comparing him to Arod in least, or saying that he’s the next Jeter, i’m saying at his peak he’s got a chance to be a poor-man’s Jeter. (and no, i’m not saying he’s going to rack up 2800 hits either, as Jeter most likely will..i’m mostly speaking in terms of power, physique, etc, rather than speed)
