Game 69, Athletics at Mariners

RHP Rich Harden (2-3, 2.80) vs. RHP Joel Pineiro (2-3, 5.69)
7:05pm, FSN and KOMO

See how won-loss record can be misleading for pitchers? Oh, and Harden’s making his first start since May 13 after missing a month with a strained stomach muscle. Meanwhile, Pineiro’s allowed just three earned runs over his past two starts (13 innings) and induced 10 and 13 outs via ground balls in those two outings. Hence the importance of keeping the ball down.

Hmph. My thought on the front office/upper management is that they don’t have a very good idea on the proper way to win in baseball. They’re bringing all the wrong ideas from their previous jobs (i.e., they don’t realize at this level, employees are NOT interchangeable and they are very much irreplaceable (or at least more so than in the business world).

That leads them to be risk averse because they can’t evaluate the risks properly. Only in extreme instances, like this past season, will they take any risk in player evaluation and signings.

So, when outsourcing becomes possible in MLB, the M’s should do ok.

Cameron’s “slow spiral down” after his first year with the M’s:

    year OPS+
    2000 111
    2001 124
    2002 114
    2003 106

    year WARP3
    2000 7.3
    2001 8.0
    2002 7.2
    2003 7.4

Heh. Actually, you WANT the Ms to outsource….outsource their jobs to younger, cheaper players for older, more expensive players who CAN be replaced.

wandering OT, the Futures Game rosters have been announced; Betancourt & Choo are on the World team:

104-Sarcasm doesn’t show up too well in forum threads. I was referring to the all players being interchangeable parts, in the view of the Ms’ front office, thus the outsource comment.

Younger, and cheaper for replacement level players is fine. The Ms have been going for relatively cheap (compared to good players)over the hill veteran RLPs. This and avoiding super stars, and even stars, for several years has led the Ms to where they are today, in my view

Oh, yeah. Agree totally. That’s part of their not knowing what it takes to be a winner. They figure all you need to do is replace to a certain level, and at that level, you bias yourself towards the “popular” , the local and the long time vets.

Good players AREN’T that interchangeable, and the better they are, the less replaceable they are. And getting great players (surrounded by competent players) is part building a winning team.
