Game 70, Athletics at Mariners

LHP Zito v LHP Moyer. Both regarded as premier left-handed starters only a couple seasons back. Now they face off to see if the A’s might be able to crawl out of the cellar on the back of the M’s.

    People cling to their inferences, DMZ. There’s not much you can do about that.

    Inferences are entirely the fault of the inferrer.

    Then someone clobbered that guy over the head saying that there was no way Morse would be a consistent .270 hitter.

    The exact quote is:

    “He’s just not bloody likely to hit even .270 consistently.”

    And if you look at the players I compared him to, who all had similar minor league stats, they didn’t consistently hit .270.

    Now, maybe putting Mike Morse in a Mariner uniform is going to magically make up for up for his career minor league batting average and BB/K ratio, plus the fact he plays half his games in an awful ballpark for hitters, and he’s going to be the new Rogers Hornsby, destined to have a 5 year stretch of .400 batting average.

    I’d say the odds are against it, though. THAT DOESN’T MEAN I HATE MICHAEL MORSE. I think his having a 1000+ game career where he hits .255/.320/.450 and plays decent SS would be great.

    As I’ve said before, teh funny will be that if Mike Morse turns out like I think he will, the same people who bitched and moaned about Cammy 24/7 will probably bitch and moan when Mike Morse has a year when he hits .240 with 130 K’s (which I think is fairly likely to happen)- even though he’ll likely still be a decent player. And when someone on the USSM staff says something to the effect of that, they’ll get flamed.

    I agree very much with what Alex said earlier, and what others have said since my last one, so I’m going to call this good.

    Michael Morse is the new ARod, Derek Jeter, Boy Band heartthrob, and DMZ all rolled into one!

    Teenage girls are already flocking to him like he is the Pied Piper.

    I assume by .270 you meant averaging around .270, perhaps in a range of .250 to .290. Your .255 prediction reads right off his minor league career average: .256.

    But if you look at Morse’s career in the minors, there is a general upward trend in batting average. The exception being Tacoma this year where he was adjusting to a new level, AAA, and didn’t have much of a sample size yet before getting called up to Seattle. What if Morse is learning something new at every new level. After all, in 2004 his AA batting average was .282.

    Sometimes tone is important in our comments. EC, had you not used the term “bloody” I wouldn’t have even replied. And I’m not the high school principle here. I’m just choosing sides for myself. I’m saying that the earlier guy who projected something like .270 might be close. And if Morse ends up at .260, is that really that far off from .270?
