RHP Chan Ho Park vs. RHP Aaron Sele, 7:05pm (KOMO and FSN)
How misleading can won-loss record be for pitchers? Park is 7-2 despite a 5.75 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and .302 batting average against. Just think if Ryan Franklin had this kind of run support!
Sele fell back to Earth last time out against the Padres (4 IP, 8 ER) after a good run of starts going back to the end of May; he still currently sports the best ERA among regular M’s starters.

I was serious when I wrote it, but now that I realize it, PHing Dave Hansen definitely isn’t the beginning of a new era. So I’ll just say I was joking.

I’m not sure. If we assume that I always have bad luck, then there will be roster moves. But in my mind, that is a good thing, so it can’t happen. Ditto with the other way around. So I guess the world will fall off its axis.
A bit off-topic, but…
Has anyone heard any gossip on whether the M’s are expected to sign Lance Lynn, rhp, Brownsburg (Ind.) HS? His numbers (albeit in high school) are simply sick.
Of course, Roger Salkeld also looked like Nolan Ryan in high school….
Dobbs homered tonight too. He actually is hitting well since his demotion.

Too bad about Lynn — I wish the Mariners would have offered him closer to first-round money.

Watching this team is demoralizing. Is there anyone on this team that is really indispensible? It is time for a true evaluation of this team from stem to stern. If they ship the whole lot out of town, how much worse could it get? If you love this team, you have to hate what you are currently seeing.
What is extra demoralizing is that the off-season big-money acquisitions appear to be anchors that will weigh this club down going forward. Particularly Beltre.
It is demoralizing. There was a time when I’d look forward everyday to watching the game, and that was the highlight of my day. It had my undivided attention. Now, the game is on but I’m really not paying attention because it is so boring. There’s nothing fun about the Mariners anymore. It shouldn’t be boring to watch baseball, but the last few games have been like watching paint dry. Last year even though we stunk, it was fun at the end of the year, watching all of those rookies who really seemed to enjoy the game and played hard. Watching the team as it is now is excruciatingly boring and I am frankly losing my interest. Bring up Sherrill, Campillo, Leone, somebody, anybody, but until we have new, exciting faces, I have no reason to pay attention anymore. The box scores will tell me everything I need to know.
Could be the old Death Spiral thing. Now firmly in the Teens-Back they could sink exponentially. The goal then gets negative like it was last year: “Fight to Avoid the 100 Loss Season!”
#61–I hate to say it, but you are right. And, for those who say that Beltre needs more time to prove himself, how much more time will be needed before we all can throw up our hands and say “No mas”? The rest of the season, the end of next year, or the end of his contract?
The way the team plays, they just don’t seem to have any passion. It frankly sucks.
I won’t give up on Beltre till AS Break 2006. And I’ll put that in writing.
#61–I hear you. I have been a die hard Mariners fan since I moved to town in 1978. I thought I had been through my baseball purgatory once we caught the winning bug in 1995 through 2003, but now this franchise is in shambles again, a la the rudderless M’s of the 1980’s and early 1990’s. My interest is still there, and will probably always be there, but, man, this is getting tough to endure!

I agree. The M’s are background noise for me. But still, it IS baseball, and it’s the only sport I follow, so I stay tuned in, though without the intensity of past years.
A winning team would obviously be preferable. Failing that, a team that tries at least. Having neither of those, the Mariners will have to do. It’s BASEBALL for cryin’ out loud.
The blogosphere is more interesting than this ballclub right now.

The fact that it is baseball is the only reason my TV is still on.
But let’s just say I am also following other teams. I will always be primarily an M’s fan, but I am enjoying watching more interesting teams such as the White Sox.

#71–If you remember in the mid-80’s, they had as a slogan, besides the pointless “Big League Stuff!” motto of I think 1985, that was simply “Anything Can Happen”. Well for this woebegone club, how about “It Happened Again!”
Y’know, you can argue all you want about Rivera not being a major leaguer or whatever. But those few games that Rivera, Lopez, Morse, and Reed were all in the lineup, those were fun games. I liked those games. The team did have a different feel, and it was great. The team as it is now is shit. They all stink and none of them care, except maybe Reed. That may be an unfair generalization but as a whole, the whole god damn team seems so freaking lazy.
Jose Lopez tonight 2 homers 6 rbis.
Bavasi should be paying attention.
Can I suggest that on Sunday Kenny Rogers be allowed to slap silly the whole Mariner ballclub? It would certainly help him with his obvious anger issues, and make me feel damn good, too.

I saw those kids beat up on Glavine at Safeco in a very fun game. Makes you schedule your bathroom trips carefully.

Crap. Let freaking Lopez play freaking 3rd if Boone is going to get hot. Bench Beltre. Put Morse in left field where he’s going to end up anyway, DH Winn, put Ibanez at 1st and let Lopez play short, if Boone is suddenly going to become 2001ish. Or better yet, trade him. I don’t really give a darn right now.

Open question: what is the over-under on this current losing streak? I have a gnawing feeling that they stink it up to the All-Star break and lose the rest of this series, get swept in KC and in Anaheim for a 15 gamer.

I’d say it won’t be that bad. I fully expect us to win tomorrow, to promptly lose the rest of the games until the break.
#79, 80. DJC. First I don’t see Boone getting hot. He is what he is – an older guy who is on the slippery slope sliding into the end of his career. We should trade him to SD and eat whatever we have to of his remaining contract. Put Lopez at 2B and let him play every day.
Second, you can’t use “He’s not doing much.” as the criteria for benching Ichiro because then, using that criteria, you would have to bench the whole team.
Well, it looks like the old players only meeting really helped.
Fairly “obvious did mention that he had been in a few of those and sometimes clearing the air helped and sometimes, not so much.
Does anyone know what Bill Krueger was fussing about right after the game? I missed it but it sounded semi-interesting. Maybe Putz intentionally threw at someone? I wasn’t sure what the deal was but it sounded like the only interesting thing that happened all night.

As I recall, last year’s team tanked their way into a 9 game losing streak before the All-Star break. Good times.
Like I said in another thread, the team movie for 2005 M’s should be Groundhog Day.
#86 Maybe he was fussing about how Angie Mentnik must have had her journalistic ethics in a deep freeze to allow her husband to write a book about Boone and then come on a Mariners’ pregame show to hawk it. (Her husband also had the class to say that she was having contractions and might “drop one” tonight.) Something about this setup seems waaayy too cozy for a supposed sports news outlet.

I mean, it’s bad enough to think you have to drill the guy at that stage in the game, but if you’re gonna’ do it, at least try to get the ball past the 56′ mark.
I’m guessing the Ranger’s had a good post-game chuckle about that.

This team is boring. It’s not merely bad – bad I can tolerate if it’s at least entertaining. No, this team is dull. Just like last year’s team was dull. All the personality this team once had has been stripped, leaving the barren husk of boredom.

There was a pretty hot girl standing outside Safeco asking people to sign the anti-gas-tax-increase petition.
Maybe they should have started her instead of Sele.
Since the Mariners are out of playoff contention and we are heading into the dog days of summer soon, here is a great marketing idea for the Mariner Front Office: Have the Mariners try to set the Major League record for consecutive losses!
Yes, it sounds absurd, but when you think about it has a certain charm.
It will be like Ichiro’s quest to break George Sisler’s hit record or the “Refuse to Lose” pennant drive of 1995–ONLY IN REVERSE.

The only thing in Seattle that stinks worse than this team is that corpse flower at the Horticultural Center. And at least the corpse flower only lasts for a couple of days.
