Billy Beane on the Peninsula Sept. 29-30
What does Billy Beane have in common with longtime White House correspondent Helen Thomas, co-founder of the Mountain Gorilla Project Amy Vedder, and Sergei Khrushchev, son of former Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev?
Right now — other than the obvious carbon-based form of life thing — not much.
But just wait until the end of September, when the Athletics’ GM will follow in the aforementioned luminaries’ footsteps as the “American Conversations” speaker at Peninsula College.
The events include:
* A Dinner and Conversation at the SunLand Clubhouse in Sequim on Thursday, September 29, at 6:00 p.m.. For ticket information, please contact the Foundation Office at 360-417-6535* A Community Conversation on Friday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Peninsula College Little Theater on the main campus in Port Angeles. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
* There will also be a special Studium Generale Campus Conversation at noon in the college’s Little Theater. There is no admission charge for this presentation.
Sounds like a terrific event, with up-close-and-personal access to Mr. Moneyball himself. Worth checking out if you’re in the vicinity.

What, pray tell, is Peninsula College?

Perhaps a better question, or a slight rephrase:
“You’ve built some very successful teams for half as much as your division rivals. It would seem you could build an empire with double the budget. Do you feel that’s the case, and if so, what would it take to get you to wield a red lightsaber?”
The new A’s owner has given Billy an ownership percentage, so I would not expect him to be going anywhere else. The A’s also seem to be set up to be even better over the next few years…..older veteran players will be gone, and younger/cheaper/better players are on the horizon.
not to mention the chance for more payroll from said new owner.
Incidentally, Peninsula is a great community college. I attended there for two years before moving on to other places and have very fond memories of the school and some of the professors there. And if any of you make it to the dinner in Sequim, you’ll be in my old stomping grounds. Ah, Sequim, you fickle mistress.
Bring Billy Beane here and you have another high salary bust. This team needs a total management overhaul.
I’m a former copy editor at the Port Angeles paper, so I know the place well. I’m definitely planning on going. If anybody else is, let me know and we’ll hook up.

I’d love to go to the dinner, but 125 bucks is a lot for a college kid. Might try to make the trip across for the public discussion though. It’d be pretty sweet to hear both Bavasi and Beane in little over a month.
Can I buy Bavasi a ticket?
“Mr. Moneyball” makes him sound like some sort of superhero. Which, admittedly, would be pretty freakin’ cool.

Yeah, I know, you want to improve the mariners. But, if you wanted to just improve the general enlightenment of beleaguered college students, then I’d be happy to oblige.

Stupid question probably but is Amy Vedder any relat to Eddie?
As someone who spent the first 18 years of his life in Port Angeles and breifly attended Peninsula College, let me just say that they didn’t used to have stuff life this. Damn. I’m telling my Dad to go, although he won’t understand why.
