I was at the game. The pitch that Wright took laid him flat on his stomach — he fell towards 3rd base and laid still for about half a minute until everyone could come in and look at him. It happened fast, but my mom said she knew it hit his neck area, since he clutched that area in pain.
The more comical play for me was in the 1st inning, when Ichiro blasted a ball right at Giambi at first. Somehow, it stopped on the ground right behind Giambi, who did not see it. He spun around 360 degrees looking for it underneath himself, and barely picked it up in time to lunge towards 1st to tag the base. If Giambi had not been 6 feet from the bag to touch it, that would have been a base hit. Ichiro got cheated on a couple other hits he made — at least one more hard to first that Giambi was right at.
There were some outstanding defensive plays by the M’s today — Beltre and Reed just flat outran some balls that they had no business being near. And Betancourt at SS jumped and barely got to a ball that I thought there was no way he would get.
The Yankees pre-Rivera bullpen looked really weak.
#49: Derek Lowe was a bad pitcher last year. He had two very good outings in the ALCS and in the World Series, but that didn’t make him a good pitcher, as the Dodgers are now discovering.
Joel Piñiero had a very good outing today.
#51: Flash Gordon’s not really weak, but Torre won’t give him the ball before the 8th inning because, I guess, he likes bullpen pitchers to “own” certain innings.
According to data compiled by Dr. Jon Miller of the Northwestern University Medical School, “One adult American in five thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth, an idea science had abandoned by the 17th century.” (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/30/science/30profile.html)
Dunno where that leaves Derek’s excellent statistical analysis of Bloomquist’s abilities in the field of public opinion, but I’m not optimistic. Although I’d guess Seattle would score better on the ‘sun around the earth’ quizz than would a random national sample.
I hope.
A win is a win, we’ll take any we can get. Heaven knows we don’t get many. Have to stop wearing my yank hat for awhile. Go M’s EAST!

Re: 40 by Ralph — I think the timing of the piece had more to do with John Levesque’s column on Monday than anything. There is plenty Derek could have written if he REALLY wanted to dump on Bloomquist (or not written in the case of sticking up for his baserunner abilities).
I wouldn’t. Seattle is the home of the Discovery Institute, the big backer of “intelligent” design.
58, and you’re suggesting that the Discovery Institute thinks the sun revolves around the earth? Ummmmm, no.
No they don’t. But if they thought there was money in it, they might start some radical research in that area.
More than one in two Americans believe that humankind didn’t evolve from “lower” animals. A ratio which is probably worse in Seattle because of the discovery institute. (Why is the Gates foundation funding them, anyway.)
I truly believe Derek’s article will have no impact on how Bloomquist is perceived in the Seattle area.
If you think that ratio is higher in Seattle of all places, then you haven’t experienced the rest of the country.
Nice work Joel. Yep.
As far as the Bloomquist article-Derek did you start it before Willie was put on the DL? I think the “kicking him while he was down” argument would hold less water if that were the case. Not that it holds much water now.
I liked the article, and I like Willie Bloomquist. Levesque’s column was so absurd that it needed a response. I have to say you took the high road Derek by not mentioning that column in your piece. I would have been tempted to say “Oh, and John Levesque is a butt puppet.”
Did anyone else read that Randy Johnson took time to talk to Matt Thornton (at Thornton’s request) and to Felix Hernandez (on his own)? Both those gestures struck me as very classy moves by a guy with a rough public persona. I never stopped being a Randy Johnson fan, but seeing him in pinstripes is rough…
That gesture doesn’t surprise me though. My impression of Randy is that he isn’t a polished guy and because of that sometimes says/does things that turn people off, but he doesn’t do it because he is a bad guy. As a kind of ugly huge tall guy he never had the “charisma” of the “big man on campus” type of jock a la Jeter or A-Rod.
To me that makes him more of a real person than those kind of P-R conscious media idols.
Amen, #64 — I’d rather have a team full of talented “real guys” than talented phonies like a certain Yankee #13…
