    To clarify my point, because I’m an arsewit and can’t let this lie: I’m not saying adults shouldn’t read Tolkien; do whatever floats your boat; I like Roald Dahl myself.

    I AM saying that an 1100-page, faux-medieval-Nordic saga about hobbits, trolls, elves and orcs is not serious literature for grown-ups.

    You do recognise that Tolkien, lamenting the lack of a shared English pseudo-historical mythology, was trying to create one, right?

    Is it somehow less valuable than other mythological writings because it isn’t as old?

    Mythological twaddle isn’t serious literature for grown ups.

    Please, please stop. Please. Colm thinks fantasy literature can’t be serious literature, or he’s holding that position because it amuses him. Let’s just grant that Colm believes these things, and move on.

    In closing, I’d like to say that Tolkien’s pretty awesome and I stand with everyone here who read him and loved it.
