    Given Reed’s horrible baserunning (he of the 50% basestealing when he isn’t being picked off before he even runs) and his two GIDP tonight, perhaps YuBet (who seems to have learned to take a walk, and hits through the gaps when he doesn’t strike out) would be a better #2? Heck, let’s move Ibanez to #6 and bat Ichiro in at #3 (well, not until he gets his 200 hits I suppose, so maybe next year) and let the middle infielders lead off.

    You know it’s the dregs of the season when you start thinking about lineups for next year in the bottom of the 9th in a close game….

    Eddie did it! Unbelievable. With Putz and Eddie the game is always one hit away from a loss. Well, if the M’s can take one more from this series, this month will start looking better.

    Ray, I have no idea how you continue to put Guardado and Putz in the same category. Eddie is light years ahead of JJ.

    On radio they were reporting that Grover hurried everyone into the clubhouse for a meeting. Any guesses as to why.

    My guess: Grover wants to tell everyone that he just saved a bunch of money on his car insurance.

    you would be hard pressed to find a worse major league lineup outside of washington at any time this season- if anyone finds one, let me know. (rivera’s mlvr is his projected mlvr from bp 2005, he only has 34 pa’s, so i didnt think it would be appropriate to use his inflated mlvr from that small sample size.)

    putz and guardado have had identical seasons this year in terms of vorp (11.5 to 11.4). although guardado’s vorp has generally come in higher leverage situations, thereby meriting a slight edge in performance, guardado is nonetheless highly over-rated and has made nearly 10 times putz’s salary this year for marginally better performance. that’s an innefficient allocation of resources if i have ever seen one, and its a shame guardado couldnt have been moved at the deadline. (im sure someone very valuable and far cheaper could have been had for him- joe dillon would have been highest on my list.) he may end up costing $4.5m next year if he renews his option like he did this year, assuming bavasi is smart enough to decline the $6.5m team option. im not sure that he is.

    58. Funny, but I was going to suggest they had to dress quickly and hurry back to the hotel for an early curfew. Maybe there is going to be an all-you-can eat buffet at Denny’s tomorrow morning.

    Hey, at least the M’s won. Too bad I spent most of this game watching Blue Jays-Yankees on ESPN and Marlins-Braves on TBS. I hate the Braves but I have to respect them – at least until the postseason.

    55 – oh man, I was out to dinner and I looked at the baseball scores on my Sidekick, saw the Phillies had come back from the 10-6 debacle (after being up 6-1) to win 11-10 and yelled, “YES!” and someone said, “Oh, did the Mariners win?” and I said “I don’t know. Oh, hey, it looks like they did. GO PHILLIES!”

    I feel kind of bad, but oh well.

    Wow, Franklin even got the win. Neat.

    5 run 9th for the Phils?! And the game-winner?? Mr. Walk-off?!?!?!?! Our ol’ pal D. Bell! David Bell gets a 2-run 2 out 9th inning homer, his 10th of the year.
