You forgot “Innings Ignited: Bloomquist”
in order to begin to remedy this offensive offensive situation i propose two things- trade for kelly shoppach to be starting catcher this year and try to pick up some value over average at the weakest offensive position in the al. (i dont propose blocking clement- but shoppach is major league ready and will be playing for the minimum now. when and if clement is ready, shoppach should be able to be moved for greater value than he is acquired for.) what would boston want? maybe one of the mariners’ gaggle of young relievers, and with a pickup of chris booker that could be rather affordable. the second thing (or third if you count booker) is to either demote or trade betancourt in favor of free agent rafael furcal and pick up 50 points of obp and 50 more of slugging while losing nothing with the glove. (and most likely gaining alot defensively if fraa is anywhere near accurate.) the al averages for a ss this year for obp and slg were .331 .412. even in an off year furcal will better that by 20 points overall. i will be surprised if betancourt ever reaches that obp more than once in his career. any thoughts on this? i know people are excited about betancourt, but i cant see him as anything more than a hole in the lineup, especially if he is hitting anywhere but 8th or 9th. somebody give me reasons to think that betancourt will hit, because i havent seen any yet.

Now I just need to track down what the power/speed number is.
It’s not all about offensive production when it comes to winning ball-games, and seeing as the M’s don’t have a pitching staff that takes matters into their own hands more often than not, having solid defense up the middle is a key. We’ve got spectacular defense up the middle with Betancourt, and the only way I try to get Furcal is if Betancourt is moved to second, which is not something I’m totally against. But to move one of the top five fielding shortstops off the field in the hopes of signing furcal to what is likely to be a $10 million per year contract is kinda stupid to me. Sure, you pick up substantial offense, but I think you could do better signing Paul Konerko for that money, and Konerko would be worthless at Safeco.
Keep Betancourt at SS and focus on actual upgrades in the lineup, like Giles (either one), or Ramon Hernandez. I’m even for the Jacque Jones idea, I was putting him forward two years ago when he was “available” at the trade deadline as a long-term solution in the OF. If you can’t land someone who is a remarkable step up in offensive production, then focus on landing at least one of the best FA SP’s available and then get another serviceable guy like Washburn/Loaiza for the middle of the rotation. The offense was a bigger problem this last year than the pitching, no question, but your upgrades are gonna be more expensive in the offensive side of things. I say focus on SP.
I have to disagree. Our pitching was terrible – our hitting was merely poor.
Sure, we were 8th in the AL is runs allowed, and 13th in runs scored, but we play in a severe pitchers’ park.
#7, compare the road stats. The M’s hitting was actually worse than their pitching.
To me, it’s not as much about which was better or worse last year.
My take is that there are several reasons to believe that our offense will be better next year, independant of any aquisitions… and there is only one reason (Felix) to believe the pitching will improve next year.
How about just park-adjust the full season stats? I’d rather not reduce the sample size more than necessary.
Okay, so both hitting and pitching were terrible. But hitting is going to improve on its own by virtue of us starting the season with better, younger guys. Pitching is the thing that won’t fix itself.
THAT was a fun fact. Actually, that was a sad fact considering this team. I’d like to see not splits by more ties where they are high. Now that would be a happy fact.
