M’s re-sign Moyer
1 year, $5 million.
It’s a good deal for both.

That’s awesome news. Thanks for the early notice.
Hotcha. Hopefully he just pitches at Taxpayer Field. Bavasi can now let some of the dead wood drift out to sea.
Good. A descent contract. Glad to have him back. 😀
Seattle Times is saying 5.5 million. Still good though.
Congrats to the M’s for not doing anything stoopid so far. Money well spent.
Bleh.
As long as he doesn’t eat up all our cookies.
Aren’t Franklin and Meche due to be up for arbritation by the end of the night as well or is that a different situation?
That’s December 20th. Tonight’s deadline was to offer arb. to free agents.
I’m sure we will find out the details to this deal by tomorrow morning.
I have a feeling that incentives were built in, because of the structure of Moyer’s last deal with the M’s.
If he ended up agreeing to a $3.5M base with $2M worth of incentives then I’d be totally estatic!!!
I’m kind of hoping that the M’s and Meche can come to a 1yr deal for no more than $3M. That would make him pretty tradeable!
The deal is 5.5 base, with 1 million in incentives, 200k for 160, 170, 180, 190, and 200 IP.
I’m glad they got it done. Jamie has a reasonable shot at being an effective pitcher this year, the team and rotation need him, the price is fair, and he gets to end his career a Mariner in all probability. Sometimes, things just work out.
Garry- I’m thinking more along the lines of a $5.5 Million BASE, with incentives of $2-3 Million built in… The FO can only get Moyer (and I only want him for that matter) if his contract is filled with incentives.
I would be extremely happy if it were a $3.5 Million baseb with $2 Million in incentives, but I just don’t see that happening. If that were how cheap he is wouldn’t he have signed earlier?
Oh ok, thanks Taylor for the specifics. Are those out on the M’s site now?
For the details.

Its a 5.5 mill base with another mill possible through incentives… I think thats about 2.5 mill more than Dave’s estimate when he offered his roster projections earlier…. all in all not a bad estimate given the uncertain crazy spending this off season.
So far the M’s have spent roughly 29 mill on payroll this offseason (Eddie G, Moyer and Jojima).
Trades anyone? Unfortunately Meche has NO trade value since most people think the M’s wont tender him on the 20th. Unless they take a chance and offer him arbitration, any deal involving Meche could make the Boone deal look good….
Righ now the M’s have three arms in their rotation. Two fifths of their rotation from last year is essentially untradeable (Meche and Franklin) but could conceivably be decent trade bait if teams werent waiting for the M’s to cut them lose in two weeks. Franklin’s career numbers have got to make someone somewhere interested.
The Times says it’s $5.5 million, plus incentives that would top out at $2 million if he pitches 200 innings.
I hope they cut Franklin loose now. Let him stink up somebody else’s pitching staff.
Terry, you mean 19M right?
Yes. Itis.
One thing I don’t get: everybody is anxious to cut Meche loose when he actually had a better year than Pineiro. Pineiro pitched more innings, but only won 7 games to Meche’s 10. Meche surpassed Pineiro in every category except for walks and strikeouts. Why not keep Meche and trade Pineiro, if anyone would take him.
[ot, there’s another post for this]
#22–Let them get rid of power as we build it?
That’s maximum money on Moyer. If it’s $5.5-$7.5 million (he’ll get the 7.5 unless injured or benched) That’s just a bit too much in my opinion.
Hey King Dog. Wanna know what the two most important stats for a pitcher are? Walks and strikeouts.
#18: here’s my math…
Eddie= 6.5 mill
Moyer=6.5 mill (assuming incentives kick in)
jojima-16.5 mill (granted its over 3 years)
but youre right about 19 mill for the year
This will turn out to be one of the worst signings of the year. If Moyer is to make 5.5 million he should have had to earn it. Like 3 million plus 2 million in incentives. This is why the M’s won’t sign Millwood, did not sign Burnett and are destined to be losers. At least w/ Gillick we could make the playoffs. Bavasi is a joke Sweet rotation
1) Felix
2) Moyer
3) Morris
4) Piniero
5) Meche
90 losses again!
Overbay off the market as well.
Im hoping that the passing of the magic midnight deadline means the M’s true intentions about Millwood will come out. My gut says he’s signed before Friday night.
Ive argued that the M’s should kkep Yorvit but maybe a Yorvit for Bigbie trade makes sense if he’s your fourth outfielder…it would strengthen the bench.
Im hoping for Durazo getting inked to DH making Ibanez the left fielder or Jones being inked for left making Raul our DH. I guess id prefer to have Yorvit as the bench strength but I understand the value of a guy like Bigbie coming off the bench. Im just not as fond of the alternative backup catchers as some others seem to be. Yorvit is magnitudes better than the alternatives defensively and he’s proven to be respectable offensively.
The M’s bench blackhole has been a negelected topic on the great blog.
Moyer is a good signing…cheapest quality arm signed this off season. Kudos Bavasi….
Not sure what happened to my earlier post, but I mentioned that the Ms have traded Torrealba to the Rockies for a PTBNL.
I think Moyer is going to suck and we’re going to let him have too many chances because he’s making 5 million and we won’t want to dump on a long time Mariner. Blech.
I agree with #27. Obviously the M’s had an advantage in competing for his services, but it is still a good deal for the M’s. Just think, a league average starter who pitched 200 innings last year got a contract with less total value than either Bobby Howry or Scott Eyre (sp?). So far the M’s have spent, in rough figures, 5.5 mil on Moyer, 6 mil on Guardado, and 15 on Johjima. When one takes the market into account, that is wise spending.
Well, the re-signing of Jamie Moyer is a waste of somewhere between $5,500,000 and $6,500,000 million. Of course, though, numerous casual fans would’ve cried like imbeciles if good ol’ Moyer wasn’t re-signed, which might, in turn, have caused a drop in ticket sales.
It great to have Jamie back, but I admit to loving the guy as a person and a competitor beyond his nuumbers.
OTOH, his numbers are hard to fault, either. I was thinking that less guaranteed and more incentives would have made more sense, but given it was only a one-year deal, the current market, and the M’s need for starters, it looks pretty good to me.
Let’s check back at the AS Break or at year-end to compare relative values (salaries and productivity) of starting pitchers who were eligible for free agency this winter. Moyer probably won’t be looking all that bad.
About the only good thing about this deal is that it’s only for one year. Despite what Burnett and Loaiza got and what Millwood’s going to get, the market for a #4 starter, a #3 at best should not be $7.5 million (which is what Moyer will get if he pitches 200 innings).
At least the Astros had the balls to decline arbitration on Roger Clemens rather than let him hold them hostage til the end of January. The M’s waited ’til the day of the deadline, realized they didn’t have another left-hander in the rotation and then blinked and gave Moyer the money he wanted.
Unless they’re increasing payroll to accomodate paying Moyer that type of money, it is going to be another 90 loss season for the M’s. Two lame moves in one day — go Bavasi!
Other than the M’s saying they’re raising payroll to accomodate bringing Moyer back for one last year, about the only thing that would make this deal palatable would be if Moyer agreed that he’d waive his 5 and 10 rights next July so the M’s could actually get some prospects back for him if the Seattle team was out of contention again. Obviously that would be against the CBA so it’s not going to happen.
For a team that has lost 90+ games two years in a row and has a leadership void according to Ichiro, this club has too many players that are considered untouchable (i.e. they won’t discuss trading the wonderful Raul Ibanez, overpaid to bring Moyer back, won’t discuss trading Betancourt, Ichiro, Sexson, Beltre, etc.)
I don’t really see this signing preventing the M’s from going out and getting a Millwood or Jones. If the offer to Millwood is 4/$44M, it’s probably going to be backloaded, ala Sexson, so the Moyer deal, being one year in length, doesn’t really keep the Mariners from taking on a contract like that. There’s no guarantee they are going to sign anyone else, so this almost had to be done.
I’d be interested if a stathead wanted to look at Moyer’s stats over the last two years and tell me why they think he’s a better bet than Meche, Pinero, or Franklin. He sure looks old and bad to me.
2005 VORP:
Moyer = 30.5
Meche + Pineiro + Franklin = 18.6
“Old and bad” Jamie Moyer was nearly twice as valuable as Meche, Pineiro, and Franklin combined last year.
VORP is a counter stat, and not really the best for predicting the future. I give you that Moyer helped the team last year. There have also been years when Pinero, Franklin, and Meche have helped the team, they just didn’t happen to be last year.
Unfortunately, the years that Pineiro and Meche helped were before serious arm injuries, and the three-year trends for Franklin, Pineiro, and Meche all point straight downhill.
I’m not so much up on Meche and Pineiro as I am down on Moyer. I don’t think any of them are worth much. All 40 year old pitchers are on a trend that point straight down hill.
Moyer improved last year. The three-year trends for Roger Clemens and Kenny Rogers point uphill.
