Mariner news of the day for Tuesday, March 7th

Deanna’s starting a baseball book club, which ties back into the review of Baseball Between the Numbers that ran here.
Horrible headline of the day: “Appier stops M’s bleeding” (PI, other versions at the TNT and in the weird world of Steve Kelley “The seasons in the sun are etched in the lines on his face.”). Also in the PI notebook: teams are getting into the supplement business (approved supplements).

In Tacoma, Foppert can be in real game situations with gradually increasing pitch counts while he’s kept on a 5 day schedule. That luxury doesnt exist at Safeco.
Foppert has real potential. Why not be cautious with him-especially since the playoffs aren’t at stake either way?

Which is what happened last year before the end of the season. He’s had additional recuperation time since then, and unless you can’t treat him like a starter now and stretch him out, why would you need to treat him differently after you break camp? Why intimate he has a shot at the roster (which Hargrove did)?

Because the other options have very little potential to be much above replacement value? We’re talking about two guys who didn’t pitch AT ALL in 2005 (Burba and Appier) and Harris, who’s Ryan Franklin’s younger and non-steroid using twin, and guys who are less ready than Foppert (Nageotte, Bazardo, Cruceta).
Hey coward, where do you get off saying Harris is Franklins’ twin?
No disrepect to Franklin, but they are not anything alike. Two things you did get right were, younger and non-steroid using. Other than that, no similarities IMO.
#52: you think he’s ready-I dont.
We might as well find out if Foppert’s ready. It’s certainly premature to say that the Mariners aren’t a playoff contender; playoff teams have looked worse going into a season. I don’t think the Mariners are a playoff contender, but that’s just a reasonable guess. If everything breaks right, they could be, and you might as well behave as though you’re a contender until the season proves otherwise, unless you’re a true no-hope team like the Royals.
#53: squint a little….
Franklin, age 32, 2005: ($2.7M)
11.2% K/BF
7.45% BB/BF
3.37% HR/BF
Harris, age 31, 2005: (ML minimum)
11.0% K/BF
8.81% BB/BF
3.96% HR/BF

I was referring to the personality not stats.
