Lazy Sunday

M’s v Rockies! Bloomquist is playing! HOLY MACKERAL ARE THE TEAL JERSEYS UGLY!

M’s lost yesterday, but Felix still rocks (ST). Guardado is a sage to young players (TNT). Pineiro enjoyed playing in the WBC (TNT).

Alert reader Aditya Sood pointed out that yesterday Matt Thornton pitched for the cycle and then some in getting three outs:
1 HR
1 3B
2 2B
2 1B

That’s painful. In happier news, both Gonzaga and the UW advanced in the NCAA tournament in two games that were much more fun to watch than a Thornton-thwacking.

Boy, Foppert’s getting rocked as I write this, with a nice assist by his defense.

Yeah the [jerseys] are pretty crappy. Good thing they’re going to be used as the BP [jerseys] this year. So we really [won’t] have to stomach them this season. Except if [you’re] around for BP I guess.

Question for all U.S.S.M. authors? Do you hate, dislike, or what the WBC? Just curious. I know one writers opinion but not the others for sure.

BTW, it what nice to see Ichiro have such a line: 3 for 5, 2 SB, 1 RBI.

  3. DMZ on March 19th, 2006 2:48 pm

I’ve watched some of it, but while the games have been good, I just haven’t been able to get into it. This is weird, since I loved Olympic baseball and I’m a big fan of international competition in general.

I actually think the teal jersey look pretty slick. When I was in middle school, I loved the Mariner teal color so much, I took my all teal jersey to Home Depot and got them to match it perfectly so that I could paint my room that color. =)

WRT the WBC, was anybody else completely ticked off that over half the games were only being shown on tape delay at 2AM?! I meant, I know March Madness is big and all, but I’d much rather watch a Panama vs. Dominican Republic game than watch the semi-finals of the mid-west corn basketball league.

    Go Bucks!

The teal BP jersey looks like the “anti-shirt” the new guitarist that replaced Dewey in “School of Rock” wears at the Battle of the Bands.

Nice triple by Jeff Clement there. Which suggests the question: are there any *bad* triples?

I wish there was a secondary audio track you could listen to just the game sounds on, with no announcers. I’m already twitching with annoyance.

  10. DMZ on March 19th, 2006 3:19 pm

Not that that is a particularly unusual state.

Hey, so according to Lookout Landing, yesterday was lazy saturday. And now you guys say today is lazy sunday. Very confusing.

  12. DMZ on March 19th, 2006 3:54 pm

I was trying to offer a nod to the “Lazy Sunday” short. If they want to get their laze on a day earlier, more power to them.

  13. eponymous coward on March 19th, 2006 4:03 pm

Why can’t it just be a lazy weekend, Mr. Corcoran? Or are you too busy fighting the traffice in McCall to even consider that?

DMZ, I also find that Mr. Pibb + Red Vines + Crazy Delicious.

13: That’s an equals sign for the final part of that there equation. And not as good as Dr. Pepper + Budweiser anyway.

I know its spring and only 16 games in…. but I still hate seeing stuff like this:

    TeamRS RA
    Seattle

  16. David J. Corcoran on March 19th, 2006 4:19 pm

    I don’t get it.

  17. rdave on March 19th, 2006 4:20 pm

    please delete accidental post above.

I know its spring and only 16 games in…. but I still hate seeing stuff like this:

    Least Runs Scored:
    Team RunScored (Allowed)
    ——————————
    Baltimore 77 (97)
    Houston 87 (97)
    Seattle 89 (145)

    Most Runs Allowed:
    Team RunAllowed (Scored)
    ——————————
    Seattle 145 (89)
    Washington 143 (98)
    Atlanta 135 (103)

The M’s have the biggest margin between Runs Scored and Runs Allowed. They’ve allowed the most runs and have scored the third least runs. Its only spring… Its only spring… Its only spring…

The Mariners should completely change their uniform design and make the players wear shorts instead of the stirrup pants (ala Bill Veeck’s White Sox).

Now that would be a interesting look. Teal jerseys and shorts.

And could you imagine Jaime Moyer wearing shorts? Or Ichiro? You’d see more chicken legs than Kentucky Fried Chicken. 🙂

  19. Matthew Carruth on March 19th, 2006 5:33 pm

They should go to all white uniforms and switch from baseball hats to bowler hats. Basically, good old fashioned cricket uniforms. And tea breaks would be delightful.

So is BH Kim becoming the archetype for “anti-clutch” in the pitching category? Talk about a career highlight film consisting of big home runs given up on big stages. You wouldn’t think doing it three times in two nights in the WS could be topped, but he found a way…

  21. Evan on March 19th, 2006 6:54 pm

It was nice how the announcers spent all that time setting up how hard Petco was on sluggers, and then Korea started giving up bombs.

I wish there was a secondary audio track you could listen to just the game sounds on, with no announcers. I’m already twitching with annoyance.

I was literally just discussing this idea with a friend of mine yesterday as we struggled through the first few innings of last night’s WBC game. For whatever reason, baseball announcers now completely detract from my enjoyment of the game. So much so that I have a hard time watching baseball on television any more. I would pay decent money for a feed of the game sans announcers. If there’s any relevant information about injury, bullpen action, lineup changes, etc. that information could easily be scrolled across the bottom of the screen.

C’mon MLB, be at the forefront of something cool for the first time ever – offer an announcerless feed of the games and I’ll pay you for it!

  23. joser on March 19th, 2006 8:40 pm

Ideally they’d offer five audio feeds: the home team announcers in english and spanish, the visiting team announcers in english and spanish, plus ambient sound with no announcers (except what you can hear from the PA).

I would have loved to hear the cuban announcers for their WBC games, and I don’t even speak Spanish. The baseball game I attended in Havana was more fun than just about any game I’ve ever attended.

  24. mstaples on March 19th, 2006 8:45 pm

I second these requests for the SAP option. I should note, however, that MLB actually does do a decent job at “be[ing] at the forefront of something cool” — MLB.tv, condensed games, real audio broadcasts and other cool things were put into place by MLB before the other major sports (certainly in the cases of the first two I listed). Being on MLB’s side of an argument is about as cool as bringing Scrabble to concert, but I have to note MLB’s initiative on these issues.

  25. mstaples on March 19th, 2006 8:46 pm

*a* concert. Whoops. Must be lazy Sunday.

  26. DMZ on March 19th, 2006 9:40 pm

To be fair, though, when MLB decided to consolidate all the team websites etc, almost every team had worked out free, easily accessible streaming media broadcasts of one form or another. MLB just standardized, signed one huge contract, and put a price on it.

  27. joser on March 19th, 2006 10:09 pm

Yeah, in some ways the switch from seattlemariners.com to seattle.mariners.mlb.com was a downgrade in functionality.

  28. DMZ on March 20th, 2006 12:47 am

The problem with a secondary audio channel is that if you pay attention you’ll be shocked at how many plugs they get in — it’s really insane, and if offering an announcer-and-ad-free channel means fewer ads and less ad revenue, then they’re not going to offer it, no matter how much happier it makes people.

  29. Steve T on March 20th, 2006 1:06 pm

One reason to not give a damn about spring RS/RA is that a lot of those runs are given up by guys like Emiliano Fruto — five of them on Saturday. In other words, non-Mariners. That’s on top of the sample size issue.

Derek, if you can rag on people for misspelling Pineiro’s name, may I twit you just a little for mangling the name of a noble fish – the mackerel.

I’ll bet you twitch with annoyance when you’re sleeping!
