Hope for rain Saturday: means free game at Safeco
The Rainiers v Mariners exhibition game Saturday would be played at Safeco and would be free! free! free! to all fans if it’s rained out in Tacoma.
“Hopefully, the game between Mariners and Rainiers will be played as scheduled at Cheney Stadium on Saturday, and every attempt will be made do so. We appreciate the interest of the fans in the Tacoma area who are planning to attend. However, just in case the weather doesn’t cooperate, we have a backup plan to play the game at Safeco Field. If the game is moved to Seattle, all fans will be welcome to come to the game free of charge,” said Mariners president Chuck Armstrong.
That’d be kinda cool. Further updates as events warrant.

but it’s in Portland tomorrow.
My fault, fixed the date.
don’t worry about it. I was planning on driving to Vegas tomorrow to try to catch the game, so I was about to say “it’s in Vegas tomorrow”
Just remember, David: “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”
but I never actually got to Vegas
Makes it easier to keep whatever happened…there.
Speaking of Vegas, they just showed Tommy Lasorda sitting on the third base side behind home plate at tonight’s M’s game. Tommy’s clearly not on the Slim-Fast payroll anymore.
Wasn’t he pushing pasta sauce or pasta or something before that? Maybe he still is.
It’s too bad I decided to check the schedule, because it would have been really funny if I would have woke up at 5 AM tomorrow, drove 300 miles to Vegas in a car I’m not insured on (rental car) to pull into 51’s stadium in time for a 1:05 start time. I would have laughed at myself.
I’m sure you would have found something to do.
This makes me want to arrive in Seattle a day early just in case.
That is really cool, especially since tickets to that Tacoma game sold out in like 15 minutes, not that I’m bitter or anything.
70% chance of rain all weekend? Lovely!
I would have driven back to Phoenix like I would have anyway after the game to fly back to Idaho with the Corcoran Clan.
No it would most certainly not be cool! I live 2 1/2 miles from Cheney Stadium and already paid for the tickets (at a bit of a markup). Seeing the game at Safeco wouldn’t be special to me in any way.
it’s just that there is nothing quite as hilarious as driving 600 miles and accomplishing absolutely nothing.
I would argue that there are many things more hilarious, but humor’s subjective.
I wish Rizzs would stop flogging the possible venue change. People might show up at this rate.
Can they stuff a sock in Henderson mouth? He drives me nuts more than Valle.
Indeed, the forecast right now is for a steady rain all Friday night and Saturday morning, becoming a lighter rain in the afternoon.
Maybe I’ll drop in and check it out if they move it 😉
#14. Total agreement.
The ONLY thing special about Saturday’s game is that it would be played at Cheney. (I was irritated to discover at last weekend’s Cheney open house that the Ms had pushed the Rainiers out of their own home dugout for the game).
The ONLY thing important enough to the Ms to cause them to move an exhibition game to Safeco is that they’d suddenly get parking, concessions, and merchandise sales that they weren’t otherwise slated for. It’s not like they’re waiting till Saturday to pick the winner for that LAST spot in the bullpen.
Forgive me if I suspect their motives and don’t think they’re really out to do anybody but themselves a big favor.
Hey now, didn’t you read the press release? The whole point of the move is *because* the game is so important. The Mariners wouldn’t lie about something like that, would they?
Another thing about Saturday’s game: it’s a Mariners game broadcast by Mike Curto, Officially Endorsed Broadcaster of the USS Mariner, though you’ll still have to listen to him on 850 AM.
Please, no. I have tickets to the Saturday game. The ballpark is fifteen minutes from my house. (My for-sale house, if anyone’s interested in real estate in Tacoma, Washington.)
It’s not like it’s a huge imposition on my life to drive up to Seattle to watch a game, but the Tacoma game was going to be cool because it’s so convenient. C’mon, a little love for Tacoma would be good.
Currently, the forecast for tomorrow calls for occasional rain showers “at times”, yet says there should be around a quarter of an inch of rain. That’s a lot of rain for occasional showers.
Anybody know what the plans are for tonight in Portland if it rains? Luckily, my $9 (cheapest seats) tickets tonight are bad enough that they’re under the roof, but I wanted to sit in the beer garden on the field all night.
However, since I’m coming up Saturday for Sunday’s feed, I guess I’ll root for rain in Tacoma too!
A free game in Safeco if it rains?! I wonder how many people would show up for a free Mariners’ game?
The only thing better would if the Mariners gave out free concessions as well like hotdogs, beer, and Ichi-rolls.
It would be just one big party.
I thought I had heard on a radio news update that they got the go-ahead to move the game to Safeco, but I wasn’t listening closely and they may have just echoed what we know now.
FWIW, at 6 pm tonight, as I walked up to buy my CF bleacher tickets for the first weekend games of the season next week (and Felix’s first start!), I saw the Safeco roof being closed as I walked down Occidental, despite no rain. HARBINGER?
mln, in an attempt to answer your question… I’m just one guy, but if they announced on the radio at 12:00 pm tomorrow that the game was taking place in two hours at Safeco, on the house, I would run out my door and head for the first bus Downtown at 12:00:05.
I would consider such an event a golden opportunity, even if it is an exhibition.
As of Saturday morning, it appears that skies in Tacoma will remain clear enough to play the game there:
Today: Cloudy with occasional light rain throughout the day. High 52F. Winds SSW at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 80%.
So good for all those Tacoma fans who paid for tickets.
