Game 85, Angels at Mariners

Jeff and I both attended today’s game and watched, in horror, as an elderly woman in front of us finished her nachos and then used her fork to eat the (substantial amount of) leftover cheese. When the fork prongs weren’t effective, she turned the fork around and used the handle to scoop the last little bits out.
So! Why the hell does Hargrove not use Soriano when the game is close and they’re in trouble, but instead chose to bring in Mateo, who’s been crap almost all year, and then bring in Soriano much later (granted, he didn’t do well, but I don’t get the logic).
Also: bleaccch.

I think we did most of our bitching about this game, Hargrove, and this team in the Pineiro demoted thread. I just dont think we wnat to talk about it anymore.
Maybe Soriano’s not 100%, so they were willing to use him in a non-pressure situation to give him work, but they didn’t want to bring him in with the game on the line and have him throw “stress pitches.”
Or maybe Hargrove’s decision making is of poor quality. Sherrill? Putz? Bueller? Anybody?
I see a shoulder surgery in Soriano’s future.
…..I hope not.

I was listening on the radio as I returned home from Oregon and while I couldn’t visually see what was happening, I couldn’t believe it when Hargrove left him in after the inhierted runners had scored and it was 5 – 5. They were clearly beating him like a rented mule and Hargrove and Chavez seemed oblivious to the obvious diificulties Mateo was facing… like getting SOMEBODY out… ANYBODY out!
#4 – They admitted they were wrong on Ibanez several times. People can’t see the future.

How can anybody eat processed cheese? Turns me into a human phlegm factory.
To me, the events of this weekend portend an ugly July breakdown. I think the pitching, overall, has been better than could be be expected and a decline is due … one that won’t allow the hitting to keep pace. I see a lot of 9-6, 10-4 and 7-3 games in the second half.
 The gap between Moyer’s ERA and his FIP (and xFIP) will almost certainly be narrowed as the season wears on.
 I think Felix will, on balance, improve, but still have some ugly outings along the way.
 Meche won’t be as good in the second half, as we’re already seeing.
 Sherrill, generally good early, has lately been failing to keep his first batter off the basepaths. I wonder what his strand rate is … and what sort of inherited-runners-scoring nightmares he leaves for the next guy.
 Mateo is lunch meat. As is Pineiro and Guardado.
 Washburn is … well, Washburn. Sigh.
I fell asleep in my recliner when we were ahead and woke up when it was over. Best way to watch this particular game.

On the bright side, Meche did not pitch poorly today. He should have ended up with 3ER max. I thought his curve looked pretty good and he was hitting most of the locations he wanted to hit.
Hey, at least the Yankees got thumped tonight.

Jones, by the way, has made some strides in his plate discipline. I remember a while back when he had 7 walks to 46 Ks. Since then, he’s drawn 15 walks to just 21 strikeouts. Our boy just may be getting the hang of Triple-A.
sigh. I left the room at 5-1, and returned to find it 11-5. Not a happy time. The dessert that followed helped a little though– scoops of lemon sorbet with a tablespoon of good tequila poured over it, and a little lime zest. Margarita-like goodness ensues.
ok, if we can fiqure out that Mateo doean’t generally do well in the inherited-runners situations (the game on sat to the contrary) wouldn’t you think Chaves & Hargrove might?
Anybody know what happened to Clint Nageotte? He’s not on the disabled list, according to the Rainiers Web site, but I don’t think he’s pitched in about three weeks.

The Angels appear to have little leverage in trading Jeff Weaver, since they must release him at week’s end if they do not trade him by then. But, with starting pitching at a premium, General Manager Bill Stoneman still hopes to generate enough interest to get a significant player in return, even if the Angels have to pay much of the $4 million left on Weaver’s contract.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers all are believed to have some degree of interest. The Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks could consider Weaver too
Yesterday’s outing has to be worth a couple of ka-chngs on the MLB cash register for them even considering it was against the Mariners.

We’re running a column by Greg Johns of the King County Journal in which he describes meltdowns in Hargrove’s office first by Gil Meche and then by Carl Everett. Meche was pissed about being pulled in the fifth; Everett was pissed when told he was being pinch-hit for by Eduardo Perez.
Has Carl Everett ever proven himself to be anything but a clubhouse cancer when he comes across adversity? I’ll answer: no. The only place where he has not been scorned is Chicago, and that’s only becasuse they won the World Series.
As for Meche, he should be pissed. Exhibit A: Ervin Santana was allowed to work through his early, tough inning after pitching very well. After that tough inning, he threw very well. Meche was not allowed to work through his early, tough inning and was replaced with Julio “Gas Can” Mateo. The result of the decisions by the managers of the two clubs speaks volumes about how each manager handled his pitching staff: Angels 14, Mariners 6.
I was at the game Monday night to see Felix pitch. Not an inspiring day at the park, though the game promotion made for a fair size crowd. I got a plate of reasonably decent Thai food on the first level behind home plate; much, much better than nachos. Twas the best thing in the occasion. I left after seven innings, and I almost never leave before the last out.
The Ms have lost that little bit of edge, and they aren’t playing very good ball. Again. That’s what happens when you don’t get to clean up against the NL Lost. Oh well.
Hargrove’s choice of Mateo was very likely dictated by the inning he brought him in rather than the game situation per se. Grover thinks like that.
I just got in, and wanted to emphasize:
Watching this woman go after the processed cheese was like watching an anteater take apart a den of termites. Methodical, precise, grisly and horrifying.
Only Everett would be mad at not getting an at bat with the game already over for all intents and purposes.
Does Crazy Carl do ANYTHING well? Can’t field, run, hit lefties, etc etc

RE: Nacho Cheese
I work part time in a concession stand at a ballpark and I see people order that stuff all the time. I always wonder “Do they realize this stuff comes in a foil bag? Do they realize that none of the ingrediants are cheese? Do they realize that there is a Mexican food stand right next to ours that make better nachos with actual (still very processed, but actual) cheese?”
RE: Today’s game
It was pathetic. I can’t even call that sort of thing baseball. The Tacoma game last night was 1000 times than that. We scored five runs without getting an out and then we give the lead back to the Angels. Speaking of the Angels, did they get new uniforms with green and yellow on them that only Mariners players can see? Did the Mariners get confused and think that the “A” on the Angels’ jersey stood for Athletics? Or did someone slip and let the Ms know that they were so close to 1st place that they buckled under the pressure?
Did anyone else who went to the game see Ibanez during the pregame HR hitting contest? He was watching every swing of the bat with extreme concentration and awe. I think he might have picked something up watching those guys, that HR of his wasn’t too shabby. Now if only a few of the other Ms could have been out there studying too….
In addition to watching people who shouldn’t be eating the type of food they’re eating eat, another Safeco pleasure worth mentioning is sitting in the sun on a very hot day. People who shouldn’t be showing so much skin show it. For every hot babe in a halter top there’s twenty people who are either extremely overweight, hairy, or both, wearing tank tops or going without a shirt for all to see. And then there’s always the person who is getting fried by the sun in front of your eyes. There was a guy in front of us who started the game with pale white skin and left looking like Daredevil. Of course he was one who took his shirt off. Poor guy won’t be able to take a hot shower for days.
In the right conditions you can also watch people who don’t realize that the hot sun is making each of those beers do the work of three or four, so after three or four they’re practically swimming in the seats and behaving in ways they wouldn’t want their mommas to see.
That “cheese”, though — oh dear. You might as well swig corn oil or bacon grease right out of a bottle. The anteater is a lovely image, thanks Jeff.
I am enjoying the “we won three straight, our problems are solved!” vs. “we lost three games, we’re in the toilet again!” seesaw though.
That cheese is roughly a 2-1 mixture of salt and petroleum. I don’t understand why it doesn’t immediately cause vomiting.
