Game 108, Athletics at Mariners
LHP Barry Zito v LHP Jarrod Washburn
I’m always leary when the talking heads on ESPN1-4 describe any particular game as a must-win. It’s along season, and there are many games to play. These three games at home against the A’s aren’t must-win games. But they’re certainly close. A sweep of the A’s would put the M’s a game back in the divisional standings and into the thick of it. A sweep at the hand of the A’s would put the M’s six games back of the A’s with two other teams between them and the season running out. 1-2 would be almost as bad: every day that goes by without making up ground is a day the team falls behind.
Win, team, win.
Or, you could always play Bloomquist in center.

Hmmm… Woods / Mateo / Green. Yea I think Grover must have some October plans involving some sort of wild boar hunting so he can’t have this team going to the playoffs
Arrgh. I know I’ve let this go this thread, but it’s RIZZS. With an ‘s’ on the end there. RIZZS. And Piniella. And…
I suspect this would be a lot less annoying if the M’s were winning.
“Rizz’s” was awfully close, though.

Now THAT is funny
Please don’t tell me that means he’s broadcasting with one hand
I thought it was a “woods/green” hunting joke at first and was trying to figure out how you pronounce Mateo to fit him in…
Nah, Val’s up there with him… oh wait.
198 – I would buy that argument if Zito one or two hit the Mariners, but with 7 hits given up and 3 walks but only one run to show for it, it’s not a matter of Mystical Lefthanded Mojo.
I gotta say: Willie looks about as good as anybody on the team tonight.
Walk-off time…Saved it all for the 9th!…?
So does anyone think that Macha would dare use Street in a non-SV situation?
Ouch argh…

Good point. And that should tell ya everything you need to know when we play the A’s.
One down…
Okay, Willie jus slipped into second place behind Richie.
Street’s warming up. We got ’em worried.
Kinda makes you wish Mateo wasn’t on the team AGAIN tonight.
Two run deficit wouldn’t seem quite as insurmountable.
Just think- if Washburn had been pulled after six, it’d be a one run game right now.
Re. #202:
Well, DMZ, it’s been a long time since I’ve typed the surname Piniella — as it is, I’m accustomed to typing the last name Piñeiro, which is most likely why I misplaced the letters i and e in Piniella — thus, for whatever it’s worth to you, that’s my excuse for having had made the mistake.
Anyhow, Richie Sexson may have an awful batting average (.223) and on-base percentage (.292), but at least he’s got a decent slugging percentage (.444); nevertheless, I’d like to see him play elsewhere.
44,000 people throwing up in their mouth — a good crowd, indeed.
two out rally
that sucked.
Last two strike-outs demonstrate this team should really not be in the play-offs. Can you imagine the embarrassment having the entire country watch that kind of crap?
And it’s (mercifully) over.
Give Krueger credit (for once, lol)
He made it a point to emphasize that the team simply lacks PLATE DISCIPLINE and that’s why Zito shut us down. He also added that we swung at too many pitches out of the strike zone.
Sure its stating the obvious, but usually FSN commentators tend to miss the obvious.
223 – Everyone and their mom, were taking hacks at the hook of Zito’s and 9 times out of 10 it fell out of the strike zone.
Everyone’s mom could get more production vs Zito and Blanton than the M’s
I just wish everyone’s mom played for the M’s.
I hate playing the A’s. It’s going to be the same story tomorrow and the next day.
I can’t believe Kirby Puckett is in the Hall of Fame. What a crock of crap.
Cap Anson?
Has anyone picked up Carl Everett, or is he going to be playing in Tacoma in a few days?
#229: Why would he report to Tacoma when he can collect the same money for staying home?
so, just saw the, um, highlights. Well, at least Hargrove finally remembered Green was out there in the bulpen…
my god, the A’s don’t have anyone hitting over .300 this season.
NEWSFLASH from the PI: “A’s own Mariners”

Shocking as it may sound, Carl Everett has cleared waivers and was released by the M’s. I wonder what happened to all those teams that needed a veteran hitter, not to mention his great clubhouse presence?
Well I’m not too sure about the DFA rules, and after hearing that Petagine cleared waivers, I found the thought of Everett rumbling around in a Rainers outfit pretty funny.
Zito after the game was asked if there’s a good clubhouse chemistry amongst the A’s.
“Yeah I’d say we’re good there. We got some good guys. We got some assholes too but you just ignore them.”
Verbatim, on the air. Thank you Barry for making something amusing out of this.
I never have _any_ fantasies about managing a ballclub, but supposing that by some freak of nature Mike Hargrove in mufti and Bolle wraps sat down next to me on the sidewalk at Joe Bar with a Duvel, and said, as if to no one, “Would someone please tell me how to beath that Zito guy, please? Or just kill me??” Why I’d say, hold a pre-game meeting and say, “Anybody, and I mean anybody, in the lineup today against BZ who reads curve and swings, even with two strikes, is getting pulled before he reaches the benchan AND fined.” Zito’s curve just isn’t a strike. Don’t swing. Period.
But the Bavasi Ms just aren’t capable of playing like that, which is why this team as constituted owns nothing of my heart.
Why all of this fascination about post-deadline waiver claims this season by the media?
and oh ya…. THOSE GODDAMNED As..
I wore my new Ms jersy for the first time last night….now I can’t wash it until the Ms win…in fact, I’m going to wear it everyday until they do…
#237 terry said “Why all of this fascination about post-deadline waiver claims this season by the media?”
It’s what they do every year when the M’s don’t make a trade at the July 31st deadline, spewing this “there is no deadline” crap. Yeah sure, lots of desirable players get through waivers in August…
And there’s this, from today’s News Tribune, about the M’s not claiming Andruw Jones.
Rumors circulated Friday that the Mariners had made a waiver claim on Atlanta center fielder Andruw Jones – but they were just that, rumors.
“We’ve made waiver claims, but not on Andruw, and everyone we’ve claimed has been taken off waivers,†a source close to the Mariners’ front office said. “This time of year, teams put entire rosters through waivers.â€
Would the Mariners claim a player to block a possible deal if they suspected another team in the American League West was after him?
“Only if we wanted the player, not just to prevent someone else from getting him,†the source said. “You make a claim on a player you don’t want, you could wind up with him and his salary.â€
