Big Board Update

If you’re feeling down about last night’s pathetic effort vs. Oakland, cheer up — there’s a new Big Board in town. I’m sorry it has taken so long, but between extern, school, a new computer, and a new baby I’ve been busy. In any event, here it is. As always, leave a comment if something looks amiss (bad link, wrong handedness, etc.).
If you think the page itself looks a bit off, you’d be right. I’m still playing around with Office for Mac, and I know it doesn’t look quite right in Safari. I suspect that’s going to be the case for other browsers as well. My hope is that you can deal with the minor asthetic issues and focus on the content instead.

I had a dream last night that Felix was traded for Francisco Liriano. The board was furious.
It certainly does look a bit odd. The only real problem is the columns being so narrow – we lose last names for guys like Bobby Livingston and Wladimir Balentien.

Thanks for the update. I do well just to know the names on the 40 man.
First, an actual question – I see the NW league team has a rather large number of pitchers. Is this normal for this level of team? Oh, while you’re curing my ignorance, what are the player limits for each level? (25 for ML – how many for each of the others?)
Next, a couple typos. Does DFA’d expand to Designated For AssignmenteD? Also, there’s a stray character before the copyright symbol.
In Safari, the extra space trailing off to the right might have something to do with the col tags. I wonder if there are unused columns that show up as all that white space. I’m sorry I can’t nail this down. I’m not familiar with that tag. The td and tr tags appear correct. That is, I don’t think there are extra ones. You’ve already tried this, but I’ll mention it anyway. Select just the cells you want and then export.
It isn’t just the IE beta – IE 6.0 is only showing the top 1/2 of the first line. People names that are wordwrapped are missing the last name entirely. Probably want to do away with the fixed height rows and columns in the HTML tables, since anyone with slightly different fonts (or browser handling of table/cell padding) will do bad things…
Different leagues have different roster limits. I was a bit shocked to see how many players Everett had on the their roster, but as far as I can tell it’s legit — when I looked back through the boxscores, they really did use each of those relievers over the past three or four games.
And yes, “DFA’d” means Designated For Assignment.
As for the formatting, I’ve always done this in Excel and then used the “Save as webpage” option, and it has worked fairly well. For whatever reason, Office for Mac doesn’t perform this task nearly as smoothly. I’m no HTML wiz; far from it, in fact. I’ll play around with this and see if I can get it looking like it used to.
Ok guys, any better? I manually made all the columns wider, rather than relying on Excel to decide how wide they “should” be.
Any chance of getting some intigration between this and the Future Forty? Like putting Dave’s guys in bold or something? It would really be interesting to have a more visual tool like this to see where everybody really is.
7 – JMB, because you mentioned ATM machine and PIN number (two of my many pet peeves) in the game thread, perhaps you won’t mind me (so much) being tedious about DFA’d.
Properly it should either be D’dFA (for DesignateD For Assignment) or
DFA (for Designated For Assignment), but not
DFA’d, which expands to either Designated For AssignmenteD or Designate For AssignmenteD
I’ve only heard in conversation “DFA’d” for designated for assignment. In fact, that’s how I’ve said it. However, how many times have we heard someone say “PIN number”? Doesn’t make it right.
No biggy though. Dear Karl will depart in a few days, never to darken the big board again.
Everett was released yesterday. Shocking that no team was willing to trade their best prospect (or even a bag of balls) to obtain such a veteran presence.
Width’s are better, but the static heights are still chopping the bottom off each row in IE…

It surprises me that the Baseball America links don’t list the players’ ages. Is there any way that could be integrated into the board?
