The end of Carl

DMZ · August 5, 2006 at 6:49 pm · Filed Under Mariners

I was hoping this would go up on the Mariners’ transaction wire so I could point to the official news, but I’ve waited too long already. Everett cleared waivers and was released on Thursday. He won’t be showing up in Tacoma, if you were worried about that. Unfortunately, it looks like he also won’t be eating playing time for one of our divisional rivals.

I don’t really care about, though. He’s gone. May this debacle serve as yet another example that buying clubhouse leadership, grit, and hustle is a fool’s errand. I hope that this one finally causes the lesson to stick.

Which reminds me, I posted these and then the post got nuked in the great server crash. I present — memories of better days.

    Amen.

And here I thought it would take a Texas-sized Meteor to cause Carl’s time in Seattle to become extinct.

Looks like I’ll be having nightmares tonight. Thanks, Derek!

It’d be funnier if they sent him to Everett.

    Wait, no it wouldn’t.

Let’s put Carl in his context for the ’06 season: The Ms signed Carl; the As signed Thomas. Who had more upside? Who’s had the better career? Yes, Carl’s ‘effectiveness’ was mostly from the left side, and Frank’s is from the right—but both parks kill righties.

Carl’s signing was a management bungle, pure and simple. They didn’t have a good solution, so they prayed and threw a dart at the board. Which is why I’d rather have and FO with a plan. ‘Cause real plans don’t include guys like Carl Everett.

Why is there a picture of the guy who invented Girls Gone Wild?

At least he didn’t explode and punch Bavasi when he got the news.

  10. DMZ on August 5th, 2006 11:10 pm

Well, Corco’s either drunk or being impersonated. Is anyone in or near McCall right now and willing to bring him some coffee or make sure he doesn’t go driving around?

  11. IP on August 5th, 2006 11:23 pm

And peace reigned over the land…

    Corco, drunk and posting.

Uh… I should be enjoying the potential hilarity factor here, but I must still have a conscience or something.

Good to know you’re staying put.

  14. DMZ on August 5th, 2006 11:50 pm

I was working on this long comment about how I used to get out of situations like that, but… I don’t really want that conversation on a comment thread. So anyway. Yeah.

Ugh. Don’t remind me of Everett vs. Thomas.

    The Big Hurt: .253/.377/.514
    The Big Suck: .227/.297/.360

And yet those aren’t even the most important, or telling, numbers — the M’s signed Everett for $3.4M, while the A’s nabbed Thomas for a mere $500K.

  16. Jon Wells on August 6th, 2006 12:05 am

Thomas will probably end up reaching all of his incentives (related to plate appearances, etc.) and he’ll get a TOTAL of $3.1 million.

Meanwhile the M’s gave Everett a guaranteed $3.4 mil, which was really a guaranteed $4 mil because it cost them $600K to decline the option for next year.

I was one of those screaming for the M’s to consider Thomas before (and after) they signed Everett. But because Crazy Carl was supposed to be our “Left-handed Sock”, Bavasi signed him early (to ensure that nobody beat the M’s to him…), in mid-December. Thomas, meanwhile, signed with Oakland in late January, about 2 weeks before pitchers and catchers.

Signing Everett to that deal when a player of Thomas’ caliber signed for a much lower guarantee is pretty indefensible. The only thing I can say in Bavasi’s defense here is that because the A’s have been a small market club, when they tell a player like Frank Thomas that $500K is all they can give him in base salary, he and his agent believe it. When the agent talks to Seattle, he knows that the M’s operate with a much bigger budget and they’re less likely to accept a cheap deal with Seattle. One the other hand, Thomas didn’t have a ton of leverage coming off two injury plagued seasons…

Who’s that guy standing and praying beside the picture of Carl? That guy has a funny look on his face.

  18. JMB on August 6th, 2006 12:10 am

I think I saw that guy on TV the other day, but he was all dressed up for some reason.

  19. chris white on August 6th, 2006 6:22 am

#16 Really there is no defense! Oakland has a GM that knows what he is doing and us well we have one that doesnt!

  20. Mr. Egaas on August 6th, 2006 9:31 am

Loving the white-ass bicycle glove covered hands.

  21. msb on August 6th, 2006 11:24 am

so, suppose Frank Thomas was on the list of hitters that Bavasi gave Hargrove?

  22. mntr on August 6th, 2006 12:04 pm

Nice inferiority complex, M’s fans. The Big Hurt is obviously a bargain, but I wouldn’t think he’d have much luck hitting home runs out of Safeco. Instead, be sad the M’s didn’t sign a lefty that people thought could hit.

  23. Xteve X on August 6th, 2006 12:05 pm

To me it shows the same kind of foolishness that Bavasi displayed when he signed Mo Vaughn. It’s like he picks big names out of a hat without regard to what the player’s actual ability is and then throws money at them. I’m trying to think of one free agent signing Bavasi has made that wasn’t greatly overpaying a player relative to his worth … not so much the bench guys but everyday players. Ibanez, Everett, Washburn, Speizio, Sexson, Beltre, picking up Guardado’s option …

  24. DMZ on August 6th, 2006 12:28 pm

    Nice inferiority complex, M’s fan

    Duhhhrrr.

The Big Hurt is obviously a bargain, but I wouldn’t think he’d have much luck hitting home runs out of Safeco.

Assume, for a minute, that your premise is entirely correct, and all his value would be hitting on the road.

    Carl, away: .231/.282/.350
    Thomas, away: .259/.392/.446

You don’t think that’s a substantial upgrade? Really?

  25. msb on August 6th, 2006 2:30 pm

buying clubhouse leadership, grit, and hustle is a fool’s errand

well, apparently he did give them that clubhouse leadership they wanted– unfortunately it was tied to an inability to hit, but that might not be enough to keep someone like Hargrove from continuing to want to pay for ‘veteran leadership’

Dinosaurer boy was the designated out instead of the designated hitter. It only took $4 million wasted dollars, plus three prospects to Cleveland to actually get one/two designated hitters to take the place of Dinosauer Boy. It is hard to muster up any confidence in a front office that has no idea how to develop a roster, and a manager who has no idea how to manage a roster.

  27. mntr on August 6th, 2006 6:54 pm

#24. Of course Thomas was an upgrade. I have no idea why anyone would want Everett on their team. I just don’t think Thomas is the guy you should be comparing him to.

  28. JMB on August 6th, 2006 8:27 pm

Thomas sure didn’t have a problem hitting a homer today.

  29. mntr on August 7th, 2006 4:45 am

Soriano rubbed his dome for good luck before the game.

Hmph. Everett was Hargrove’s choice. Lawton and Petagine were decent enough choices that Hargrove refused to use.

Bavasi has problems, but Hargrove’s inexplicable choices dwarfs them.

  31. The Unknown Comic on August 7th, 2006 6:27 pm

One poster on this fine blog suggested that Everett had compromising photos of Hargrove. I guess if that were true we would have seen them unless Carl is satisfied enough that Hargrove did everything in his power to keep Carl.
