Game 137, Mariners at Tigers

Washburn vs Robertson, 10:05 am.

An afternoon game on Labor Day that almost no one in Seattle will get to see, since there is no local TV coverage. It will be on MLB.tv, however.

Robertson is a lefty, which means we probably get the crappy line-up, but please, Grover, just let Doyle play, eh? He can hit lefties, and he’s the best thing going for the team right now. Stop the “it’s not a platoon” platooning of every left-hander not named Ibanez, okay?

Edit: Just as expected – Ballgame in right field, Doyle on the bench. Meanwhile, Ibanez and his .287 on base percentage vs lefties is hitting cleanup. Mike Hargrove deserves to manage a major league baseball club about as much I deserve to be the crown prince of Saudi Arabia.

How do you give up 6 runs when the 6-9 hitters are Infante, Inge, Shelton, and Freaking Ramon Santiago?!?!

Shelton is the only player that even vaguely resembles a major league hitter there. Yikes.

  2. true_slicky on September 4th, 2006 11:48 am

So, is Hargrove’s “managerial strategy” vis-a-vis the bullpen is that he can’t use unless the runenrs on base have all ready come in to score?

Yes, the pen’s depleted. Does that mean the only option Hargrove has is to keep the starter in far past the point of effectiveness?

Maybe he figured he was using the bullpen too much, and went to some sort of BA-type therapy group. His sponser convinces him to resist using the bullpen until as long as possible.

Or maybe he has a bet with someone (who?) that he TOTALLY won’t use the bullpen- no matter what.

“Hargrove” is the term I now use for whenver I get something unrecognizable stuck on my shoe. “Excuse me as I scrape off this Hargrove…”

Wasn’t this game close? Why take Washburn out after giving up four runs. I bet Hargrove could’ve allowed Washburn to give up TWICE as mnay before using the bullpen. Somebody must’ve called his bet- “ok, you made your point!”

one plus in Washburn’s favor– doesn’t seem to bitch.

Speaking of Beltre — he’s the only hitter I’ve ever seen do a little dance when he doesn’t swing the bat. That shows me he’s not seeing the ball at that well and he’s just guessing. A hitter that is comfortable knows when to swing the bat. It’s as if Beltre doesn’t make up his mind to swing until a split second too late.

Insult to Injury. Didn’t the Mariners trade Guillen for Santiago? And somehow Santiago is now hitting RBI’s against the Mariners. Well hopefully, it will be Guillen tomorrow hitting the RBI’s off the Mariners. At least that make sense.

Ichiro on track to take the collar gain. Anyone noticed that:

Ichiro after All-Star break: .622 OPS
Bloomquist for his career: .648 OPS

And 7 XBHs in his last 200+ ABs. Not good.

  7. lokiforever on September 4th, 2006 11:50 am

And the wheels have fallen off the wagon.

At least we have a good Middle Infield….the Brewers are running out 2B Cirillo and SS Graffanino today. Cirillo is OK at second, I guess, but Graffanino is a shitty SS.

The M’s radio ads are still pumping “Jeremy Reed diving catches” — c’mon guys, you’ve had all season to record something else. Or perhaps you’re as apathetic as the rest of us at this point…

  11. ahhruff on September 4th, 2006 11:53 am

Anyone with MLB TV might want to tune into the cards/nats game.

  12. msb on September 4th, 2006 11:55 am

wonder if Beltre is falling back into the ‘I have to win the game now’ mental mode of the beginning of the year….

Fruto, Green, Huber, O’Flaherty, & Pineiro may not be the most inspiring bullpen, but they are there and can be brought in to pitch.

  13. David J. Corcoran I on September 4th, 2006 11:57 am

If Ramon Ortiz does what I think he might do, I’ll laugh really hard.

  14. true_slicky on September 4th, 2006 11:57 am

    16: Jered Weaver?

  15. David J. Corcoran I on September 4th, 2006 11:57 am

to top it off, Ortiz hits a freaking Home Run.

    Hit a HR?

  17. joser on September 4th, 2006 11:57 am

So Dave N just announced one of those Things Which Cannot Be Said Aloud.

Wait — if there’s no TV, what was Dave N. doing while Rizzs was annoucing on the radio? Just sitting around? Is that what Rizzs is doing now?

  18. David J. Corcoran I on September 4th, 2006 11:58 am

    no…the other thing.

  19. David J. Corcoran I on September 4th, 2006 11:59 am

If he does this, he might be the worst major league pitcher ever to do this.

  20. joser on September 4th, 2006 12:01 pm

That was his first ever career HR. Some days you just have everything working.

  21. msb on September 4th, 2006 12:03 pm

    oh, I don’t think the worst….

  22. true_slicky on September 4th, 2006 12:06 pm

71: Yes, toss-up between Bud Smith and Jose Jiminez, both for the Cardinals.

    Doyle sighting…

  24. msb on September 4th, 2006 12:08 pm

did Dave say someone was taking pitches?

  25. true_slicky on September 4th, 2006 12:10 pm

And of course there were the seven walks Joe Cowley allowed in his no-hitter versus the Angels, Sept. 19, 1986

  26. true_slicky on September 4th, 2006 12:11 pm

Leave it up to Ichiro to beak an 0-for-13 stretch and start the mariners’ two-out nine-run rally!

  27. David J. Corcoran I on September 4th, 2006 12:11 pm

fuck you Aaron Miles, fuck you.

  28. true_slicky on September 4th, 2006 12:12 pm

Aaaaaaaaaand there will be no no-hitters in 2006. Once again, a seson passes without one.

I’m not a football fan or nothin’, but boy I couldn’t be happier when this baseball season is over…

  29. Dave on September 4th, 2006 12:13 pm

Up by four, one out to go, only one man on base, and they’re going to their “closer”.

    That’s retarded.

  30. pdb on September 4th, 2006 12:13 pm

And there goes the shutout, thanks to Pujols…

  31. joser on September 4th, 2006 12:15 pm

4.58 ERA for a closer, on the best team in baseball. Sheesh.

  32. msb on September 4th, 2006 12:15 pm

well, that was a tad anti-climatic.

  33. joser on September 4th, 2006 12:16 pm

Hey Dave, at least Leyland doesn’t refuse to use his closer in anything other than Save situations.

  34. Dave on September 4th, 2006 12:19 pm

When Todd Jones is your closer, that’s actually a good idea.

  35. msb on September 4th, 2006 12:46 pm

and the first call of the post-game wants to talks about the Ms for the last years or so just pulling the ball too much, why, every one except maybe Ichiro and Bloomquist, pulling the ball and hitting into double-plays….

yup. that’s our Willie, staying out of the DPs.

  36. spokane dude on September 4th, 2006 12:49 pm

This seems to be a really fragile team, mentally. When things go well (as they did during the last homestand) things are great. But when something goes wrong (the Witt HR yesterday to win the game), things fall apart and the team doesn’t adjust/recover for awhile. I wouldn’t be surprised if the M’s are swept in Detroit because of this. That, as far as I’m concerned, is one reason to fire Mr. Hargrove at the end of the year.

Dave, you have seemed, in the recent past, to be fairly confident that Hargrove will be fired at the end of the year. Just in following this blog and other sites, I don’t necesssarily get the feeling that will happen (much to my chagrin). Without giving away your sources, do you have reliable information that indicates someone else will be managing the team next season?

  37. joser on September 4th, 2006 1:05 pm

Well, it wouldn’t be surprising for the M’s to get swept by Detroit even if the M’s were coming in straight from their winning homestand. Detroit has the best record for a reason. And the M’s are at the end of a losing season, out of contention, and with an opportunity to play some of the kids on the expanded roster as a sort of pre-Spring Training. I don’t see why losing 3 in a row to the best team in baseball (if that’s what happens) is a significant reason to fire the manager, particularly when there are so many other, better reasons.

  38. joser on September 4th, 2006 1:06 pm

BTW, that HOU-PHI game is turning into an interesting matchup.

85 – I heard that call too. Suckquist love knows no bounds in this town.

  40. South Pacific on September 4th, 2006 3:16 pm

Regarding Hargrove’s future with the M’s. I suggest someone put together a treatise titled “1001 Reasons Why Hargrove should NOT be Managing an MBL team in 2007” with detailed examples of his foolishness and dumbheadedness this year. Give details, statistics, color photos, anicdotes whatever it takes. Make some bound copies and have at least one translated to Japanies and as soon as the season ends have them hand delivered to anyone who has any weight in the organization.

I like 90 as a plan except: wouldn’t you really like to play Grover’s teams in years to come?

  43. joser on September 4th, 2006 5:29 pm

Apropos nothing, but look who popped up as a CF for the A’s today.

I thought one poster claimed a while back that you could get around the blackout (which I did a few times on accident when I had the package last year) by refreshing, or going back one page and then going forward, or something, I can’t remember what, but I know its do-able.

I think they disabled that loophole. I haven’t managed to make it work since about May.
