Derek, what are your thoughts on the alleged 3-way with ATL and SF?
That question, at first glance, seems a lot more interesting than it really is.
The BoSox payroll was $120 Million in 2006. It seems they’re willing to push it up to Yankee levels. Has anyone seen an estimate on the 2007 payroll target for them?
I’m sorry, but I want to see the Red Sox crash and burn far more than the Yankees next year. All of this spending after how they were crying they couldn’t compete financially with the Yanks?
Maybe they couldn’t. Now they can.
It would have been nice to watch Maddux pitch a year in Safeco. I don’t know if 10M would have brought him to the AL, but still, only a one year commitment would not have been the end of the world.

I just saw that… wow if true, but I doubt we are going to send Beltre anywhere. Putz would surely be included in the deal, but I doubt Sexy and Putz would be enough.
I think that contract is nuts. On the other hand, the Sox with Ortiz, Man-Ram, and Drew in the middle of the order, and Schill/Beckett/D-Maz in the rotation looke primed to win a whole mess of ballgames. All they need is a real centerfielder.
Is the guy the Mets got in that pitching trade (Ambiorix Burgos) really that bad? I’ve never seen him, but he strikes out a lot of guys and is only 22. Yes, he walks too many guys, but I’d trade Bannister for him in a second.
Sexy and Putz could be enough to trade for Manny, Boston has been talking about trading him for years now and at some point has too, and Sexy would put up better stats playing in Fenway thus actually look like a better player.
I was under the impression that they were asking for a whole lot more than that for Manny

Good Lord! Sexy and Beltre? Wow. That would free up so much money, even with Manny on the M’s dole for the next couple of years. 12.9 for Beltre and 13 for Sexy….. nearly 26 million off the books. Manny’s 18+ million much easier to swallow. But who to play 3B?

Seriously, I think you’ll see several significant trades nearer to Christmas or at the beginning of the year. Teams will have their plan A dashed as free agents fall off of the market and trading will become a bigger option…
Coming out of the winter meetings having stood pat doesn’t mean the off season has been a failure…
I will be surpised if guys like Dunn, Manny, Sexson and E. Santana for example aren’t moved before spring training….

The Lugo signing actually seems reasonable, though I’d like it better without the 4th year when he’ll be 34. Lugo hasn’t gotten a lot of hype, but he seems to be worth 3-4 wins with the bat AND 1-2 with the glove. 4-5 wins for $9M is a good deal, especially in this market. Of course, that assumes his second half with LA is a fluke and he winds up close to 290/365/440 with some steals.
Beltre isn’t untouchable, but they aren’t moving him to get Ramirez. What would be the point of that?

Mike Piazza has narrowed his choices down to the A’s and Rangers, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The A’s have offered him a one-year deal worth between $8 million and $9 million, while the Rangers also have a one-year deal with a second-year option on the table.
interestingly, the NY papers are framing it as the Ms neglecting Schmidt in their mad pursuit of Zito, rather than that the Ms (and everyone else) are not getting anywhere with the Hendricks brothers, and so are busy looking at every other faintly breathing pitcher…
At Schmidt’s age, you’d think he would be in more of a hurry… buh bum bump….

Re Zito: How well does his skill set project as he gets older? Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any similar pitchers (below average fastball, huge curve) that were very successful late in their careers.

Schmidt is gone. He reached a 3 year $47 million deal with the Dodgers.

Let think about this…how many of the long contracts with big payouts have really been good for ball clubs? Remember Mike Hampton (7 years and a boatload of cash) and Neagle (5), Chan Ho Suck with 5 horrifying years in Tex? Driefort in LA? Kevin Brown? Why oh WHY do these stupid baseball people continue to do the same thing? Because Zito is better than those others and it won’t happen to him? Even the greatest baseball player to descend from Mt. Olympus and play the game for 10 years and $252 Million was traded by Texas and almost run out of New York this past year.
The way I look at it, I think I’m worth at least 10 years and $200,000 until I’m 45! I can play replacement level, WFB style ball!!!
