In the notebook, Beltre’s got some kind of… approach thing. And Lowe’s meeting with Yocum. He hopes to be cleared to start his rehab.
Geoff Baker thinks the Angels are going to win next year because:
– their 5th guy “has the stuff of an ace”. So did Gil Meche, you can see where that got us.
– “pitching and defense win games”. So does offense.
– they have a good bullpen
– also, the Angels weren’t so hot defensively last year, Gary Matthews Jr isn’t a good defensive center fielder by any metric, so that’s not going to help. In fact, in Pinto’s PMR, Mathews was a sliver above Chone Figgins, who got the most time out there for the Angels last year. Unless you’re arguing that Figgins can now play third full-time, except that Izturis was better there than Figgins.
I continue to disagree that the Angels are anything special or that they should be considered favorites in the division.

McLaren still chokes up when he talks of the legendary season that saved Major League Baseball in Seattle. Unfortunately, a part of the reason the story is legendary is because it happened a long time ago.
Hickey: Rhodes, Mariners hope for repeat.
When Arthur Rhodes was a Mariner, Seattle was at its best.
Rhodes is back with the Mariners, who could use some of that same mojo.
Then again, so could Rhodes.
The notebook’s got more or less the same stuff as the Times.
Hey! You know what’s worked really well for the Mariners in the past? Trying to recapture the magic of past teams.

5″ new snow at base at Summit West in the last day, 6″ in the last 48 hours. Forecast is for 8-14 inches of new snow by sunset. Or, 8-14 inches of new snow by sunset.
I’m just pointing that out. For reference. I’m not suggesting you should call in sick and meet me up at Snoqualmie or anything.

The Angels have a killer rotation, bullpen, and are frothing with talent in the infield. I’d say they are pretty primed to do well. The Rangers may do well in the West division also…The A’s are a pretty solid team too, but they are not as good as last year, no? Does anyone else think they could slide the most from last year, maybe with the Tigers?
It’s clear at this point I’m going to have to write up a longer post about why I think the Angels aren’t going to be all that hot.
Billy Beane magic voodoo?
To me, the Angels are a favorite (if not, then who is?) but I agree they aren’t the overwhelming favorite they’re made out to be. Checking out consensus Vegas lines, the Angels are about a 58% chance to win the division, A’s 30%, Rangers 16%, and Mariners 8%. That adds to a bit more than 100, since the bookmakers have to make some money by underpaying the true odds.
But they aren’t any better than last year’s team. The offense is bad. Their prospects haven’t panned out. And Jered Weaver isn’t nearly as good as his ERA. Yeh, if the starting pitchers all perform at their 75% PECOTA, this team will coast, but that’s a 1 in 1000 chance.
I am curious to see DMZ longer post after skiing.
Since you are going to prove why the Angels are way overhyped, I’d be interested if you have any reason why I should care about Texas. I’m also a little unsure what to expect out of the A’s. They look similar to the Angels because they have a pretty decent rotation and a pretty boring lineup.
I don’t think the Angles are anything special, but I think they are the team most likely to win the division– mostly because this division is crap.
i don’t think any of the four is “anything special”…i think the division is wide open…the team that stays healthiest and gets the most consistent starting pitching will win…it’s anyone’s division to take…

How quickly Hickey forgets that it was Rhodes that also gave up the gopher balls to the Yankees in 2000 and 2001. What has Rhodes done since he left Seattle? Nothing! He’s only older and one of the many question-marked moves from this off-season.
