Rainiers Opening Day Game Thread
It’s opening day in the minors, and the M’s have a day off, so we’re throwing up a game thread for the classic showdown between the Tacoma Rainiers and the Sacramento Rivercats. Cha Seung Baek vs Jason Windsor in a battle of guys with command and no outpitch.

Justin Thomas has been impressive in his start for West Tennessee but is being outdueled by Chris Seddon. Thomas has kept elite prospects Evan Longoria and Reid Brignac off the bases so far. Tui is shockingly pulling an 0-fer.
Ricky Orta got bombed for Wisconsin (1 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 2 K), but Carlos Triunfel is already 2-3 with 2 steals in his professional debut as a 17-year-old. He was replaced in the top of the 6th inning after making a play on a groundball – no word on the injury yet, but we’ll let you know.
High Desert kicks off their season in about 15 minutes, but their team is terrible and not particularly interesting. Their webpage is the stock one provided by minorleaguebaseball.com, and their top story is a notice that Brandon Morrow has been impressive in spring training but is still expected to open the season in the Cal League. Way to be on top of things, fellas.

Good stuff around the minors so far. South Kitsap’s Jason Hammel hangs five perfect innings for Durham, but gets the no-decision because Port Angeles’ Jeff Ridgway takes the loss.
And Bobby Livingston continues to be Bobby Livingston. In his Lousiville debut: 5.1-9-4-4-1-4, 3 GBs, 7 FBs. Sigh.
Hmmm, wonder if Bocachica foolishly went for second, or did Reed just make a good throw?
Anybody know where Hunter Brown moved on to? If anywhere?
Jason Churchill was very circumspect when asked about it on his site:
“Hunter Brown is not in camp, I can’t really comment any further on that right now.”
Hmmm. Wonder if he was Ugueth Urbina’s wheelman or somethin’.

Going off topic here but did everyone know that Derek was at the Barnes & Noble in UVillage today signing his book? I wish I had known because I got there this afternoon employees kept telling me that he was there. Derek, you pimp your book so much I’m surprised you left this announcement. Anyways, there still had like 3 signed copies left, so I’m looking forward to reading it.

This is off topic but did anyone else know that Derek was at the Barnes & Noble in UVillage today? I got there this afternoon and when I asked about his book the employees eyes kind of lit up and they told me that he was here earlier signing books. Way to not announce this stuff Derek. 😛
Wow. Just got home from a City advisory committee meeting. Turned on the gameday audio. Curto’s voice is like a cool breeze on a hot summer night.
AWESOME. 3 run HR by Jones to tie it in the top of the 9th. Sweet.
Adam Jones just hit a 3 run bomb in the top 9th, with 1 out…to tie the game.

To add to Oly, it was Sean Green who put them in that situation.
Brad Thomas walked in the winner, though I thought a couple pitches coulda been strikes. I woulda much rather watched them lose on a hit instead.
Oh well…Jones and Reed kicked booty.
Why wouldn’t the M’s put Tui in High Desert this year? They have him under club control for a few more years; why don’t you put him in a place where he might hit 300/400/600 out of no where? I don’t normally buy into the importance placed upon confidence with professional athletes, but wouldn’t it make some sense to have Tui excel, even superficially, at a level above rookie ball?
Maybe in a few months, we can get Jones to play RF, move Guillen to DH, and dump Vidro. If Guillen is hurt by then, put Borchard at 1B and move Sexson to DH. That would be exciting. Or put Jones in Left and move Ibanez to DH if Guillen is healthy.
Since Hargrove doesn’t understand or use numbers, and since he does understand about small sample sizes, it takes him several months to realize what is painfully obvious to everyone else (e.g., Crazy Carl)
If you’re going to DH an outfielder, Ibanez is the obvious candidate.
