Another day of no Mariner baseball, but that doesn’t mean you have to go through withdrawls. The Fresno Grizzlies are taking on the Tacoma Rainiers at 7 pm with an extreme clash of styles. Jorge Campillo brings his 85 MPH fastball to the mound against Tim Lincecum’s 85 MPH curveball. And his 98 MPH fastball.
It’s Lincecum, Leone, and Rohn against the Rainiers, with the tones of Mike Curto guiding you all along the way.
Why do I have a feeling Rohn will someday land a non-Mariners managerial job and come to Seattle and kick the crap out of us?
Is it bad that I kinda hope he does?
If Grover is canned either during the season or right after it, what would you place the odds at that Rohn would be the replacement? Do minor league managers go straight to being MLB managers very often? It seems like they have to be a bench or hitting coach for awhile first.

I believe he was brought up to bench coach along with Chaves (pitching coach).
They simply just went into a different direction the next season.
I seem to remember there being something more to it…and what was his exact position? I didn’t think it was bench coach.

Rohn was the special administrative coach for advance scouting or something, a job where the M’s didn’t want him to leave the organization for another coaching gig but couldn’t give him Hargrove’s job, obviously, so he was there to learn the ropes, watch the M’s and their opponents, study, and wait until Hargrove got fired, more or less, and then take that job.
Rohn got fired, so the story goes, for repeatedly badmouthing Hargrove’s decisions internally and to people with other teams, which, justified or not, you just can’t do.

Really? I heard the rumor about Rohn/Hargrove, but I never knew anything to support it. I just figured Hargrove wanted his own staff and fired him in the process. I liked Rohn though. I think everyone did.
Linecum has 9 Ks through 7. 2-0 Fresno. Nelson 0-3 3 Ks…ouch.
Adam Jones has also been quiet, with a DP and a strikeout.

So, Dave/Derek, do you see any point in the Giants keeping Lincecum in Fresno, when they’ve got spotty starting pitching and are off to a crappy start? Does he really need to work on anything in order to help the team?
Yeah, the weather has been insane over the map.
Wisconsin only got a couple games in so far this year, and they’re by far the most interesting team this year for me personally.

The Giants are terrible, and they won’t win with Lincecum or without him.

His command in college and even in his pro debut last year needed a lot of work. His stuff is obviously lights out, but he has to throw more strikes to keep himself in the rotation. So, yes, he’s got things to work on in Fresno – how to get outs without running up a huge pitch count, getting strikes early in the count, and commanding the strike zone with his breaking ball.
as there wasn’t a news thread, would it be wrong to point to Drayer and Baker’s blogs? Drayer talks Felix, and Baker talks the miserable Mariner offense. and pitching.
16: Another reason not to waste his development when there are 4 better teams in their division. He doesn’t have much more pro starting experience than Morrow.
Lincecum has got to be in the same category as Morrow.
I’d like Rohn less if he managed to keep his mouth shut while watching Hargrove derail the team last year.
Looks like he threw strikes tonight — 57 strikes, 30 balls. 87 pitches is probably a few more pitches than a guy should throw in seven innings of shutout ball, though.
87 pitches in 7 innings is fine. That’s borderline economical. It’s a good sign for him. He walked 3 in 5 innings in his first start of the year. Last year, he walked 12 guys in 27 innings in the Cal League. He walked 63 guys in 125 innings at UW last year.
You can’t walk 5 batters per 9 innings and be a successful major league starter. Tonight was a good first step for him – go 7 innings, only walk a couple of guys, get through the line-up several times without running up a huge pitch count. These are the kinds of starts he needs to learn how to be a major league starter.
This is the kind of stuff Brandon Morrow should be learning in West Tennessee, rather than sitting in the Mariner bullpen.
21- Lincecum is another class as compared to Morrow.
He looked like he was struggling with HRs and BBs in spring training, but he’s been great in the PCL (through 2 starts, to be fair). The walks just haven’t bitten him thus far.
Lost in all this is a good start by Jorge Campillo. The way Weaver started off, it’s good to know that someone in Tacoma might be ready to step up.
Wasn’t there a Mariners related website called “Rohn For Manager” that changed it’s name later? Or was it named, regrettably, after another current Grizzly?
Well, I did have “Free Dan Rohn!” as a subtitle on MarinersMorsels for pretty much all of 2006. Is that what you’re talking about? Unfortunately, he shot himself in the foot.

How exactly was Leone for Third’s name (if I’m correct in making that assumption) regrettable, Ralph?
After a slow start, Clement is up to .233 / .343 / .433 with 4 of his 7 hits for extra bases. .200 ISO Power and .110 ISO walk rate is a lot more of what I expect of him then what he did during his injury plagued last year.
Adam Jones – .364 / .436 / .606. Aside from defense, does he really have anything more to learn in the minors?
Yung Chi-Chen – .333 / .294 / .467. God that’s hard to do with your OBP.
Mr. Tuiasasopo – .407 / .500 / .593. 21 years old, folks.
Casey “And His Attitude” Craig – .379 / .526 / .517. Yeah, it’s High Desert.
Aaron Jensen – 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 11 IP, 1 BB, 7 SO, 6 R, 0 ER. Two starts, 4 and 2 unearned runs given up respectively. That’s not easy to do.
Austin Bibens-Dirkx – 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 5.1 IP, 3 BB, 5 SO, 2 R, 0 ER. Still getting used to his new delivery I imagine.
Wisconsin has played exactly three games, so I’m not going to bother posting any stats from there. Triunfel is off to a decent start, but Halman is the direct opposite (10 AB, 7 SO, ouch). Then again, a lot of the guys in that starting lineup have struck out at least twice already. Chalk it up to early season nerves.
He could get WFB to give him lessons on how to suck up to the manager.
Definitely. He’s got to suck up to Grover; rookies has to know their place in his system.
