Rainiers Game Thread

Feierabend! Halsey! Lots of rain and freezing temperatures!

Listen to the game live with the broadcasting awesomeness of Mike Curto and enjoy some Mariner-related baseball. Wlad Balentien promises to only strike out twice if you listen, but if you don’t, all bets are off.

Wlad’s got one strike out already… But Lahair is off to a good start (rbi double in first!).

Oswaldo Navarro has 2 errors, giving him 5 through 11.5 games.

Balentien … the starving man’s Jeff Francouer.

Man it was cold and wet there tonight, and Curto said attendance was 2281 but for the last half of the game, there were like 100 people there, most of them huddled up under the roof.

Give me back Asdrubal Cabrera. I mean it.

Lincecum is pitching for Fresno tomorrow night, and I’m hoping the thunderstorm they’re predicting holds off, because I’d very much like to see him (except for the fact that nobody has scored on him yet, and the Rainiers are having a tough enough time on that as it is).

Clement made a great defensive catch in the game tonight and from what I’ve seen in the few games thus far, seems to be improving his defense quite a bit. Jones made a stellar throw from center to 3b.

Thx to all for the contrib’s. I enjoy reading the eyewitness accounts.

Any idea what’s wrong with Huber? He’s given up 10 runs (5 earned) in 7 innings. Parque is also getting hammered – 12 runs (10 earned) in 9.2 IP. The only bright spots in the pitching appear to be Cha Seung Baek, Sean Green and Jorge Campillo.

    Reed is hitting 220/304/317.

Couple of questions for Dave, or anyone who knows:

When did Brandt Ust end up in the M’s organization, and is he just in AAA because he’s nearly 30? Also, why did he log an inning on the mound, was there a huge 15-inning game?

    Pete,

Brant Ust was signed as a minor league FA in November. He pitched because the game was a blowout; this was the 16-1 loss to Fresno on 4/9.

He’s in AAA because every team needs a few AAA vets to pad out the roster. The Rainiers had Jose Morban and Scott Youngbauer last year – this is the 2007 model. He’s actually hardly playing at all, considering the Rainiers have a large number of semi-prospect IFs.

#6. Parque’s ERA is mostly about his first outing. his second, on Saturday, wasn’t great but it wasn’t horrible either. It was Brad Thomas in relief that cost us the game on Saturday, as Parque left with a good lead.

Byron Embry looked pretty good last night, judging from the dumbfounded expressions on the Rivercats batters’ faces as they trudged back to the dugout. Also, Ryan Rowland-Smith pitched VERY nice relief on Saturday, and Feierabend did pretty well given the conditions last night… So there are more than just a couple potential bright spots. Huber has looked…troubled though. (But not as troubled as Navarro, who can’t seem to field OR lay down a bunt).

I noticed Navarro’s errors were on back to back plays too. YIKES.

    Also, want Asdrubal Cabrera back?

308/379/346… not bad, except that’s in Double A. They demoted him after last season.

Admittedly, small sample size thus far this season. But I’ve watched all 4 home games and so far have seen Navarro make 4 errors (2 each in 2 games) and blow a game-tying bunt last night. Oh, and he’s sitting at .189/.268/.189.

I have MUCH fonder memories and thought much more of Asdrubal.

Anyone think they’ll score off Lincecum tonight?

  15. marc w on April 17th, 2007 10:13 pm

Ha! just as I thought…didn’t score on Tim, but got to the bullpen and snuck the 2-1 victory. Campillo looked good too. Change was really working.

Wlad is looking great, but the big hits in the 9th were by Mike Morse after a long AB and then Jeff Clement with a walk-off 2b. Hell of a game.

Oh, and Lincecum is who we thought he was. 99MPH in the first, with an 84 MPH change and 86 with a slider/curve (as Dave has said before, Campillo’s fb was 86). He didn’t even have great command tonight, and he still made the Rainiers look silly. I really don’t know how they can keep him down at this point. He’s ahead of where Felix was in 2005, though of course Felix had just turned 19 then.

Oh, and Lincecum is who we thought he was.

AND WE LET HIM OFF THE HOOK! IF YOU WANT TO CROWN HIM, THEN CROWN HIS ASS!

    ;P
