Also: check out Geoff Baker using OBP to explain why the M’s offense is worse than it appears. I remember when Stone was the only person on the staff who ever mentioned OBP.

196, It might be pointless, but it won’t have been point-less.

  2. planB on April 21st, 2007 8:44 pm

    …still one run short, though.

  3. thewyrm on April 21st, 2007 8:44 pm

Just once we need one of these rallies to actually produce a win.

  4. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on April 21st, 2007 8:44 pm

Well, at least I’ve found my new moniker.

  5. Arkinese on April 21st, 2007 8:45 pm

200 – seriously. We could possibly be tied or even ahead had Mateo not come in to screw things up.

  6. thewyrm on April 21st, 2007 8:45 pm

Would now be a good time for JJ?

  7. _David_ on April 21st, 2007 8:47 pm

204: Where did that phrase come from? Did one of the announcers say it?

  8. argh on April 21st, 2007 8:47 pm

Fangraph says Broussard tooks us (in round numbers) from a 3% chance of winning to a 20% chance. ‘Course I wouldn’t take 5-1 right now.

  9. argh on April 21st, 2007 8:48 pm

Is there a statistic for relievers who give up inherited runners? Mateo must be through the roof if there is.

  10. milehighmariner on April 21st, 2007 8:49 pm

    give me a break!!!

  11. joesuperdad on April 21st, 2007 8:49 pm

He was safe — Jose missed the tag.

  12. _David_ on April 21st, 2007 8:49 pm

He got the fabric on his shins, should’ve been called out.

  13. argh on April 21st, 2007 8:49 pm

That ump better be on the Anaheim payroll or there’s no excuse for that call.

  14. milehighmariner on April 21st, 2007 8:51 pm

I don’t care if he actually got him or not, when you’re thrown out by 5 feet the tag needs to be down or the umps should treat it like the phantom double play call…

  15. thewyrm on April 21st, 2007 8:51 pm

I know sometimes it is necessary, but I absolutely hate intentional walks.

  16. Arkinese on April 21st, 2007 8:51 pm

Unfortunately, I wonder if that blown safe call was making up for the two balls-that-were-actually-strikes to Broussard. I know it’s not the same ump, but that ump could see those calls just as well.

  17. joesuperdad on April 21st, 2007 8:51 pm

Hey, can we bring Mateo in again?

  18. planB on April 21st, 2007 8:51 pm

I am consistently impressed by how often umpires are right.

  19. planB on April 21st, 2007 8:52 pm

    214: that’s a force play, though… he didn’t tag him

  20. zzyzx on April 21st, 2007 8:54 pm

What’s the record for consecutive games of having a late rally to excite the fans that you still lose?

  21. The Unknown Comic on April 21st, 2007 8:54 pm

Like I say, the city of Seattle is cursed and the curse will not be lifted until we give America back to the Native Americans. Of course then most of us will have to move back to Europe so their wont be much point in being a Mariners fan because the Native Americans will disassemble the military-industrial complex that European immigrants have constructed. So basically its a catch 22 being a Mariners fan. So don’t get your hopes up.

  22. Arkinese on April 21st, 2007 8:55 pm

hee, the phantom DP. I love explaining to baseball novices, after they freak out that “he wasn’t even touching second base during that double play!” that if the shortstop or second baseman is within the general vicinity of the bag, it will often count.

    J.J.!!!!

  23. _David_ on April 21st, 2007 8:56 pm

Who are we bringing in? The idiot Angels announcers just say “the righthander”

  24. Tak on April 21st, 2007 8:58 pm

    JJ!

  25. milehighmariner on April 21st, 2007 8:58 pm

219: you’re technically supposed to touch the base on a force just like you’re supposed to tag the runner…you’re too literal on here, I was venting on Jose not making a play he should make and trying to come up with a way it could have been called out for the M’s because in the heat of the moment I want them to win and get these outs instead of give them away…sorry if rationale and being a fan doesn’t always go hand-in-hand.

  26. msb on April 21st, 2007 8:59 pm

so is there anyone left in the bullpen should this game extend beyond 9?

  27. PositivePaul on April 21st, 2007 9:00 pm

    WOOOT! Cheater coming in!!!

  28. Tak on April 21st, 2007 9:03 pm

    Morrow!

  29. Arkinese on April 21st, 2007 9:03 pm

    Woods?

  30. JMHawkins on April 21st, 2007 9:04 pm

They don’t seem to be putting the camera on K-Rod much between pitches. Wonder why?

  31. msb on April 21st, 2007 9:04 pm

    sigh.

  32. zzyzx on April 21st, 2007 9:05 pm

Hmmmm hat tug followed by ball plunging into the dirt…

  33. argh on April 21st, 2007 9:09 pm

Hat tug followed by Mariners plunging into the dirt.

  34. thewyrm on April 21st, 2007 9:09 pm

    typical

  35. Arkinese on April 21st, 2007 9:09 pm

    sigh, indeed.

  36. milehighmariner on April 21st, 2007 9:10 pm

Lame…Vin Scully’s on mlb.tv though, still a thing of beauty listening to him call a game!

  37. argh on April 21st, 2007 9:11 pm

Fact is, the Mariners scored enough runs tonight to win a lot of baseball games, provided they had league average starting pitching.

Gonna be a long season unless there are miracles waiting down in Tacoma and points south.

  38. Tak on April 21st, 2007 9:16 pm

completely agreed. The offense has its own problems, not walking, grounding into double plays, bad baserunning, stranding runners left and right… but they have been scoring decently well, and all these late-inning rallies would have lead to wins if it werent for the horrible starting pitching.

  39. Dave in Palo Alto on April 21st, 2007 9:31 pm

    And relieving.

  40. Paul B on April 21st, 2007 10:05 pm

Ramirez and Mateo just aren’t very good.

Is it true, I heard Sims say that this was the very first pinch hit grand slam in Mariner history? Can that be true?

  41. Tak on April 21st, 2007 10:24 pm

    #239

I think that comes from bad management as well

  42. shortbus on April 21st, 2007 11:41 pm

One more nail in Hargrove’s coffin. I didn’t see the game, but I’m comfortable in saying so, because it’s Bavasi that holds all the cards. At some point Bavasi will jettison Hargrove in hopes of a turnaround that makes him look like a genius, masking his craptastic effort at constructing a lineup and rotation.

  43. davepaisley on April 22nd, 2007 12:11 am

OK, best case scenario, five more consecutive losses, Grover melts down in post game press conference, gets fired. What’s not to like about that?

With Weaver going tomorrow, and cannon fodder brought up for Monday, we’re pretty sure the next two are going down, while even if Washburn pitches well on Tuesday, it will only be to see the ubiquitous Mateo come in and blow the game.

Follow that with two mandatory losses at Oakland and we’re there.

If that’s not enough, maybe a sweep at Safeco by KC will seal the deal, capped by a Gil Meche shutout on Sunday.

  44. Tom on April 22nd, 2007 12:13 am

#242: I don’t know how after Hargrove gets fired why anyone would call Bavasi a genius for something that needed to be done last August.

Although certainly getting him fired would be a step in the right direction. It should definitely be interesting to see what happens if this losing streak gets up to 8, 9, or 10 games (right now we are at 5). . .

  45. Tom on April 22nd, 2007 12:14 am

#243: hahaha, that Gil Meche shutout would certainly follow that golden rule of former Mariners coming back to bite us in the butt.

Heck, even Jeff Cirillo and Al Martin have come back to Safeco and hit home runs against us in games.

  46. bmanuw on April 22nd, 2007 1:30 am

Countdown to Hargrove and Bavasi’s asses getting shit-canned 5…4…3…2….1….

Wow our 5-3 record seems like an eternity away

  47. vj on April 22nd, 2007 4:32 am

Going back to the post and Baker using OBP I’d like to point out that Jim Street critizises the batters lack of patience against Colon in his game summary. I’d say he’s onto something there.

  48. msb on April 22nd, 2007 7:26 am

    ah, Gil.

    G IP H R ER HR BB SO W L ERA
    4 28.1 27 10 7 3 7 21 1 1 2.22

so, what is it so far — A Promise finally fulfilled? A fluke? A guy who put his personal problems behind him, by throwing it all into his work?

  49. DiamondDave on April 22nd, 2007 9:41 am

Just to close out this whole sorry thread… sorry about the lack of punctuation and capital letters in my last two or three posts. I was letting my 9-year-old type my posts while I was eating my burrito (I’m NOT making this up). Apparently I need to speak to him about USS Mariner etiquette, and also about that sorry excuse for a fourth-grade teacher he has.

Still, though, I liked the Ginsburg comment. We have some literate readers/writers on this blog! Nice. I loved 221’s post about the Native American curse, but I think it would have been much better if it lacked punctuation and capital letters.

And as far as the Ms: Is it too early to give up on the playoffs? I think not.
