Game 34, some schmucks versus Felix
DMZ · May 15, 2007 at 6:20 pm · Filed Under Game Threads
7:05! FSN! Kelvim Escobar versus Felix Hernandez! He’s so awesome even Vlad cowers to face him in his first start back!
Felix Day! Oh yeah, it’s Feelix Day, la la la la, Felix Day, it’s the only day for me because it’s Felix Day, hot-cha-cha-cha, Felix Day…
And look at this lineup he’s facing.
LF-B Willits
3B-S Figgins
SS-R Cabrera
CF-S Matthews
1B-L Kotchman
DH-R Hillenbrand
2B-S Izturis
C-R Napoli
RF-S Murphy
Ha ha ha hilarious Mike! Now turn in the real lineup card. What?

Well, Felix wasn’t sharp (no surprise), but he looked healthy and got out of there alive, so that’s a big plus. I keep hearing his mechanics are poor, and may make him injury-prone, so I sure hope the pitching coaches work on that. The other thing that’s striking to me about this game (besides the offense) is all those empty seats. One might expect after the beautiful day today, plus Felix’ return, that the attendance would be better. I think this reflects that attendance in baseball tends to be a lagging indicator, i.e. more reflective of the previous couple of years’ performance than the current one. In other words, all of those last-place finishes have really taken their toll, after those years of the attendance being bolstered by the glow of 2001.
Wow, nice play there to save 2 runs.
Carrasco cap rub meter is up to: six this inning alone.
If Raul can’t hit that pitch anymore, he needs to retire. A 93 MPH fastball, belt high, down the middle? Geez.
sexson has no luck this year. None.
holy cow, go away for an hour and only 2 innings have been played?! what happened to Escobar?
I saw what was at the time the record for longest nine-inning game back in 1996 — Red Sox at Yankees, in the Yankee Stadium bleachers. Something like 4:46. This seems longer. I guess that makes me old.
maybe Raul has inherited Edgar’s eyesight along with his mantle.
if they score a few more runs, do we see Davis’ debut?
is Dave out with a cold? he’d been sounding pretty congested lately, and I imagine a 70-something who is fairly recently had pneumonia might need to take more care …
Ok, it’s going to be embarrassing if the Country Music Awards go shorter than the baseball game.
That being said, best new female artist nominees…all I can say is…wow.
Beltre is a good third baseman.
Cinco!
#258: People are going to hate me for saying this, but Dave should retire. He’s got heart problems, and anyone who listens to M’s broadcasts knows he makes a lot of mistakes these days. I love him as much as anybody, but his work these days gives me the same sinking feeling I get when I see a favorite player stay too long.
King Single
Ichiro!
He has more hits tonight than I had in my entire MLB career!
Anyone going to tell us why the DP wasn’t turned? Turbo wasn’t going to beat that out…
Cy White
How about this Sean White fellow? 4.1 perfect innings, and on only 39 pitches!
Wow. KC just tied it up on a ridiculous center field bounce over Swisher’s head. Street placed on the DL today and it shows.
I don’t think the Angels are even trying anymore.
The stars are aligning for the M’s to win the AL west????
For lo, in the days of multiple punctuation/ a losing victor came from the Northwest…
I just came on here to say:

“now warming: Sean White. Dang.”
All I have to say is, Fishiam, your pessimism turned out to be completely unwarranted, and I hope you have a more positive view of potential outcomes the next time Sean White enters a game. 😉
Davis shows what he can do: get the game close enough for Putz to get a save.
Sean White and O’Flaherty in the last two days have been lights out. It has to be because the offenses of the teams we’re playing are in a bad funk. The Mariners must be getting pretty lucky. Hey is anyone still here? Hi Lauren. (echo)
I admit, my comment in 273 was a cheap shot.
I like how Jason Davis is showing off that “power arm” that we coveted so highly. 88, 86, 89, 92, 91, 92, 92.
Hey, a 94 MPH four seamer up in the zone.
The standards for a “power arm” have really come down, apparently.
M’s win! Only 1 game back!
No. 276: 3 up, 3 down.
Way to find the positive. The M’s offense hit Escobar hard, got to him early, Felix was a welcome sight even though he didn’t pitch like Felix, the M’s bullpen held the division leader scoreless for 5 innings. Good win for the Mariners.
#276:
Small sample size. What do you expect? His arm is one Central Time Zone; it was already asleep.
(Apologies. My posts don’t usually appear so drowsily written.)
Looks like the Royals got your scouting report on Jack Cust, Dave. Bottom of the ninth in Oakland, tied 4-4, bases loaded, 2 outs, Greinke vs Cust
82 mph curve, called strike 1
83 mph curve, called strike 2
96 mph high fastball swinging strike
and off they go to extra innings.
If HoRam, Baek and/or Batista can just pitch competently (ERAs of 4.5 or so) the Mariners will be a very dangerous team.
Re: FUNK BLAST
To understand the hilarity of FUNK BLAST you really need to appreciate the accompaning Richie Sexson photoshop jobs.
USSMariner is not a photoshop friendly site. Therefore, here, the joke is lame
And if I could fly around wearing tights, I’d be a superhero.
Always with the pessimism.
Actually I am less than confident in our rotation after you get past Felix and Washburn. But I am hopeful that the flashes of competence we have seen can become more regular.
Embrace the Funk Blast, DMZ. Love the Funk Blast.
Derek is just upset because “Zumsteg” is Afrikaans for “Funk Blast” and he thought he had a trademark.
Is it just me or have the Mariners hit good pitchers like Escobar and Matsuzaka really well this season?
BTW “Funk Blast” was originally a ride at the EMP. The CD might still be available at the EMP gift shop – a fine collection of classic 70s Funk if you like this kind of music.
Going into tonights game, Ichiro was hitting a “dissapointing” .286, considering how he normally tears the cover off the ball in May. But I was still very happy with Ichiro this year, because his defense in CF has been even better than expected, and he has continued his SB groove from ’06.
Now tonight, Ichiro went 5/5 with 5 singles, and that would help anybody, but I was surprised to see just how good his line is right now, he’s hitting “only” .312 but his total line is: .312/.376/.435 (his career line is .330/.375/.437). Ichiro is OPS’ing over .800 and is on pace to shatter the record for putouts in CF. He’s quietly having a very good year.
If the M’s play like this every day, they can put Weaver back in the rotation.
#292: The horror…the horror!
#292
Um…no. But they might be able to survive with HoRam and the two Bs.
There’s always your friendly neighborhood linky-link.
It’s pessimistic to want to be a superhero? Someone go tell Clark Kent, we need to get him on anti-depressants pronto.
