Happy Felix Day, or Happy Conflicting Book Event
Felix starts tonight in the third game of the series against the Angels… and, by wild coincidence, I have a book event *at almost the exact same time* at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park. The last time I was scheduled to do an author appearance there, I ended up in the ER in Bremerton.
I’m sure some helpful soul will smuggle in his laptop, or whatnot, so we’re not entirely deprived.
Update! As msb suggests, the new secret plan is to do the reading/signing and then hustle over to the nearest TV at the Mexican restaurant (is it Torero’s?) if the game’s still interesting for general tomfoolery.
I’m happy to take suggestions on parts to read from.

what? you didn’t check to see whether they have a big-screen in the book nook????
I believe Third Place Books is actually in Lake Forest Park — same general direction but a couple of cities over to the West. DMZ, any idea what the agenda will be like? I’d like to come and get a book signed for my dad for Father’s Day (I bet others do too, or at least they should). But for a variety of reasons I can’t hang around much past 8. Thanks!
Nope. Generally speaking, it’s been “I read and talk incoherently for a while and then discuss, followed by signings” but I might well be doing a lot of signings early or… no idea. I’m happy to accomodate people, though.
I have visions of a glassy-eyed audience, all listening to the game on pocket radios or watching on their cell phones, suddenly errupting into groans or cheers at seemingly random moments in the middle of Derek’s sentences as he tries to read (at which point he stops and goes “What? What? What happened?” and everybody clusters around the guy with the biggest laptop who’s watching gameday via WiFi).
I had a similar experience at the very first M’s game I ever attended: the Sonics were in the NBA finals, and were playing a game at the very same time. They were showing highlights on the big screen between innings, but every other guy in the crowd was listening to the basketball game on the radio (and there were even a couple of people with those old pocket TVs with the rabbit ears), and the stands would periodically start cheering in the middle of the inning apropos nothing on the field. When the Sonics finally won the game they had to stop play momentarily because the place was going nuts (and even though it was nowhere near full — this was an M’s game in the late 70s — the Kingdome was LOUD).
so, any beer in the Third Place food court?
msb:
Yes, the Mexican restaurant has a bar. I’ll try to make it out tonight and get a book signed.
oh, if only this was a KSTW game– I actually have one of those old pocket TVs ….
ok, so howsabout, Derek talks incoherently whilst signing the many many books that folks will buy at Third Place, and then everyone adjourns to the Mexican restaurant 🙂
I’d totally be there… if I lived in Washington. Seattle Mariners: Oregon’s bastard baseball team.
Me, too…if I lived in Washington. Idaho: Seattle Mariners’ bastard fan base.
Me three…if I lived in Washington. Relocated to L.A. last summer, tonight will be my first M’s game since. Go Felix!!!
groundskeeping!
unless the allure of Billy Martin or Gaylord Perry is too great.
To any bicycle riders…the Lake Forest Shopping Center is alongside the Burke-Gilman Bike Trail. If you are looking for some exercise it will be an easy ride on the trail from either Seattle or the Eastside to get to Third Place Books. There is even a bike rack in front of the Third Place Bookstore.
do we know if they have a tv? I haven’t been to the Lake Forest Third Place, so I don’t have a real sense of what the food court/restaurants are like up there. The Toreros at Crossroads (a space also organized by Sher) has tvs, but they appears to be permanantly tuned to soccer …
Happy Felix day, keep those runs away …
I think you should do the stealing signs chapter and act out the “dude in the stands will kill you” one 🙂
Oh there is a god! It is raining in Michigan and softball is cancelled. No missing a single Felix pitch. Happy Day!
Derek, you’ll need a new chapter for the 2nd Edition. One on, er, Mind Control.
Last night, when he missed that fly ball, Ichiro did not have adequate mind control to tell the ball not to do what it did.
Or at least that’s how Drayer is saying Ichiro ‘splained it to her.
I’m afraid I won’t be able to cross Puget Sound for the event. But I want to put one vote in against a return trip to the Bremerton ER for Derek. And also note that there’s a really good wine bar in that shopping center, too. At least there was the one and only time I was there for another USSMariner event. I know baseball’s more of a beer sport, but it is worth checking out.
16 – You should have played in the rain. This game sucks. BTW, I’m watching the game at work on my Location Free TV from Sony off my DVR.
So, if I understand correctly, it wasn’t Roids that helped Bonds hit 73 HR, it was Mind Control, he willed the balls out of the park. Hmmmm…
