I was thinking about putting a little counter widget on the sidebar with a nice auto-generated number we could reset, but I discovered that it would require work, so I didn’t.

Well, we know it will end in 45 days or less when Horacio Ramirez gets a new contract either through an agreement or an arbitration award.
I still think Bavasi has a good move in him… let’s hope it’s true that the Edwin Jackson rumors ‘just won’t die’.
Reminds me of the gag in The Simpsons when Homer visits Lurleen at the Royal King Trailer Park.
The first time Homer arrives the sign reads: 14 Days Without a Tornado. The next time it says 2 Days.

Wouldn’t it be ironic too if we woke up the next morning to find that Adam Jones, Brandon Morrow, Jeff Clement, and Carlos Triunfels are traded for Eric Bedard or Jason Bay/Ian Snell.

The bad move regarding Ramirez was already made when they offered him arbitration (which was more than 17 days ago), so unless they negotiate a contract that pays him more than one could have reasonably expected for him to get through arbitration, I don’t think that should count.
Now that the O’s have a new CF we can hopefully count on Jones not going to Baltimore in any Bedard deal.

Do non-moves, like say, not giving George Sherrill the Bavasi arb treatment count? If so, then that hasn’t happened in the last 17 days — and I consider that a BAD thing…
This off season has been kind of like sitting on death row — endless hours of horrifying boredom accompanied by the grim knowledge that things ultimately will get very exciting. Just not in a good way.
Yeah… those are just like the things that Alanis Morissette song… they aren’t ironic, they just really really suck.

I wish I could believe that this talk of minor league at-bats referred to Sexson being sent to Tacoma. Instead, I think it means that Sexson will be given extra playing time during spring training.

You know i tell other people about this site and why its so good. this post is precisely why i think this site is so great. you grab the inner mariners fan in all of us that is optimistic but knows all that nintendo money will be spent on crap. but look at it this way. nintendo really struck it big with the wii and i know in my circle everybody looked at it like it was crazy so maybe management is building a Wii franchise….
by the way, speaking of potential moves by the Mariner– when estimating how long the M’s might extend Ibanez, should we have factored in his potential longevity?

My experience is that the commonest misuse of the term by sports writers & sports announcers is as a synonym for coincidental (e.g., the opposing quarterbacks, ironically, are from the same town).
What’s fantastic about this “streak” is we owe it all to Baltimore. Bavasi was willing to just about trade the farm, minus Morrow, for Bedard.
Andy McPhail is the MVP of the streak.
Many times the conjoining of the word ‘sports’ with that of ‘writer’ results in (usually unintended) irony. Present company definitely excluded.

This is all your fault. How on earth could you post 17 days without a bad move and not expect things to change? This is awful!

Bedard as a Mariner would be well worth Jones + Clement. Jones is a stud and plays with a lot of energy but is still unproven, and Clement reeks of someone with a bat who will always be injured — reminds me of Todd Greene. Bedard had a miniscule ERA and 211 Ks pitching in the AL East. He would shred the AL West. Plus he’d take considerable pressure off of Felix and would slot our other pitchers more appropriately as back-of-rotation guys (not #2’s and 3’s).
Honestly I doubt that Jones + Clement could get the deal done, and even if it were on the table I’m sure that Bavasi would find a way to trade additional prospects in return for an injured over-the-hill veteran (who’s ready for Kevin Millar?).
Oh, look on the bright side guys…I’m sure we will get Jay Payton back when we include a few million in the deal..

I don’t know much about Tillman and Butler, a little more about Tillman. Would either of them be a deal breaker for most? I’m not terribly high on Clement and could accept Jones for Bedard if the rest of the price were not too high. I just don’t kno if Tillman or Butler would push it over the ledge (Triunfel would push it too far in my opinion).

FWIW and IMHO, Tillman is Morrow 4 years ago…before the arm issue that Morrow had, and probably has a good chance of being stronger / harder thrower, and with any luck better control than Morrow.
Butler is Bedard 5 years ago, but slightly stronger – but Butler has had an arm issue as well as Bedard.
Well I am not going to say anything yet because nothing happaned yet…
But 20, perfect analogy for this situation.
I suggest this be the counter widget. Let’s hope it never updates.

Seventeen days seems like a long time to go without doing something stupid but it hasn’t been for lack of trying.
msnbc also has the deal getting closer to being done with jones and company for bedard…terrible…
I kind of agree with bakomariner, and not others above about Jones being included in the deal for Bedard. The article quotes Bavasi as saying Morrow is off-limits, but Jones is therefore not, which seems odd to me. Jones is a lot closer to performing at a star level than Morrow (neither may make it there), and we’d be getting a star pitcher back, so Morrow/Clement/someone other than Truinfel would make me happy, while Jones/Clement alone makes me unhappy.
Am I valuing Jones too highly? Bedard and Morrow too lowly? I would prefer no deal than giving up on Jones now.
Even with Bedard, does this team competes for the playoffs this year? I don’t think so. I know Bavasi needs us too, but I don’t think so.
This is awful. It would seem Bavasi is going for bust the next year or so, wouldn’t it? For years I’ve chuckled at Pirate fans and Ranger fans for their front office shortcomings…now I shall laugh at myself. Shame on me.
On a lighter note. Dave, I picked up THT’s 2008 Annual this last weekend. Nice writing. You summed up my feelings of ’07 exactly.

i’d be fine with a deal that sent morrow, clement, and any minor leaguer but triunfel for bedard, but am against any deal involving jones…that kid will be a stud…
and now the bedard rumor has it’s own post…
