News only if you believed him when he said he’d retire after 2009.
Whee.

I just threw up in my mouth a little. No, a lot.
There’s something vampiric about Selig.
I don’t know if I can take 4 more years of looking at that haircut.
Yeah, absolutely saw that one coming…
The Thing that Wouldn’t Leave.
More awkward press conferences and baffled shrugs.
Selig’s trying to build his credentials for HOF selection. With Bowie Kuhn having been elected to the HOF, Selig figures the bar for him getting into the HOF may be higher than he thought.
He should have left so that when the annual 10% revenue increase plateaus, it will look like the fault of the next guy. Now it looks like we will see that plateau during Selig’s tenure. At least when he finally leaves office it should be with an even more diminished reputation than the one he is currently working on with the steroid allegations.
He’s never going to leave. Selig has been an owner’s wet dream come true. He’s turned the players (via the “strike”, actually a lockout and turning the steroids issue into a witchhunt) into villains and made the owners GOBS of cash. Best. Commish. Ever. As far as the owners are concerned.
Super Nerd strikes again!

Selig may have turned the players into villains but I’m not sure that that is actually good for the game (and thus the owners) in the long run.
Selig irritated me because he doesn’t play hardball, or even softball, on any issue (except refusing to allow Rose into the hall.) He plays mushball, not really addressing or resolving issues, just keeping them around, and around. The semi-support, sort of validation that MLB offered Bonds during his “chase” to pass Aaron is typical of the Selig era.

Why not just wait, or email the authors of the blog, as we have all been asked to do countless times?
We’re guests here. Is it so hard to do as we’re asked and stay on topic? Every topic doesn’t have to be a breaking news topic — especially when it’s more like breaking rumors and breaking opinions.

When I hear Selig talk about steroids I always imagine him as Captain Renault in Casablanca – just change the “gambling” to “steroid use” and it’s a perfect fit…
Captain Renault: I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money] Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Probably, as we’re part of the mean and unruly part of the Ms fanbase known as the blogosphere…
More on topic….given that the commissioner is equivalent to “the owners’ man”, no it’s not that surprising. He does the owners’ bidding, they’re satisfied, he stays on. If they got someone else, that new commissioner might get that heinous notion to think in terms of the whole game…
To be honest, up until Selig was on the job a year or two I really thought the commish was there to treat both parties equally, not to favor either/or. It made since to me. Shows how naive I was.
He does the owners’ bidding, they’re satisfied, he stays on.
Hypothetically, what happens if Clemens wins his defamation suit? Now, I realiaze, that’s a big hypothetical, because a) he may not be innocent, and b) even if he is, it’s really hard to win that sort of suit. But, suppose he does. How satisfied are the owners going to be then? And that’s just the beginning of the possible damage that could come from the Mitchell Report.
Perhaps they should have waited.
This is disappointing because I’d like to see what the game could be, how the game could be run by someone else. I’d like to see how someone with a different concept for the game would run it.
You know, I really don’t like Bud Selig. I dunno what it is – maybe how he never seems to want to tell the media anything.
