Santana gets his extension
Reportedly a seven-year, $150m deal. Nice work if you can get it.

I’m not well versed in the inner workings of trade negotiations, but is this something Bavasi can use as leverage? Could the details of the Santana trade be what is delaying the Bedard trade getting finalized? Just curious.
He’s the best pitcher in baseball, and it’s only money, and the Mets almost certainly are “just one impact player away” from winning their division (if they hadn’t choked rather spectacularly they already would have). So I guess it’s justifiable.
But seven years. It’s better than seven years of Barry Zito, I guess. But if he gets hurt, or gets old fast…
That’s an interesting point. Would you give up a couple decent prospects to get Santana at that contract over Zito at 7y/$125m (I’m assuming he gets the 2014 buyout money there)
I certainly would, if you frame the question that way
“Santana was owed $13.25 million for 2008, so this is a six-year, $137.5 million extension. He’s expected to get $7 million in the form of a signing bonus. so, totalling $150.75 million over the next seven years.”
I would think that the Mets would sigh Johan for immediate results. Especially after last years collapse. Look for the him to get close to 20mwins this year… Possible Cy Young?
Obviously, the Mets would have preferred a shorter deal, but Santana wanted the extra guaranteed years. Why let it fall apart over that? As joser (#2) said, it is just money.
And in 2014, when Johan is putting up a 105 ERA+ in barely 100 innings as he drifts in and out the rotation with injuries, they won’t care. They’ll look back fondly on the glory days of a great 2008-2010 run and say it was worth every penny.
Wow. $150M. I wonder if they ever miss Scott Kazmir.
Cott’s says there’s deferred money involved. I wonder how much.
I wonder if they ever miss Scott Kazmir.
Before this? Sure. In a few years, when Santana’s getting old and Kazmir is in his prime? Maybe. But for the next couple of years, when they should be able to go deep into the postseason? Probably not.
The Mets are a big-market team, and they just got the biggest name of the offseason. They move into a new park in two years. If Santana pitches like his usual self but with the benefit of doing it against the NL in Shea, he should be a huge draw by himself. I wonder how sales of Mets Santana jerseys are going? (Pretty good, I’m guessing).
