Opening Day a week away
And yet no extensions for Ibanez/Bloomquist. I’m as surprised as anyone.

Bet you’ve jinxed it
we do know know, however, that there is no way that Cairo gets cut.
Is Raul’s contract up after this season?
Also, if we don’t resign him (in a bizarre twist of fate), do you think we would sign someone else or put Balentien in left in 09?
3 – I think it depends on who the GM is in 09.
Barring some kind of PR disaster, Ibanez will retire a Mariner.
That Cairo article is sickening. If he can predict all the pitches and provide coaching, hire him as a coach.
Plus if he knows what’s coming, how come he hits .250?
DMZ, I was thinking that exact thing after every paragraph of that article…
Although they also say in it that they expect him to also be a big contributor off the bench…
Ridiculous…
Here’s a bold prediction: Cairo will not be a big contributor off the bench. This will not stop him being called a big contributor to any team success.
Cairo will be terrible and will be put on waivers before the AS break…
But Oakland lost! We’re in a three way tie for first place without even leaving the dugout!
That Cairo article took some wind out of my sails as well. I was holding out a sliver of hope that they’d realize he isn’t needed.
I guess that means no chance at Reed Johnson. Reed is actually a favorite of both the “He’s scrappy and gritty” and the performance evaluation groups of Blue Jays fans (I live in Buffalo, 2 hours from Toronto, so they are my 2nd favorite team), and he’d be a great fourth outfielder.
Man. Cairo looks about 55 in that picture. Yikes.
If Cairo looks and plays like he’s 55 these days, any possibility we could sign Julio Franco instead?
Bloomquist has stated repeatedly that he intends to test the market and land a starting job somewhere, so I’m not surprised there’s been no talk of an extension on that front. Apparently Willie believes all that stuff Rizzs says about him.
Well, Florida and Washington are still in existence, so maybe WFB will land that starting job next year after all.
> give large contract to bloomquist
> attack raul
well, no, not so much as of January
I swore that if I started a post like this I’d put my head in an oven, but–
If they bring Griffey back next year, it will render Raul obsolete and his services won’t be needed. So considering the alternative, BRING BACK GRIFFEY!!!!1
I am not surprised, since my crystal ball told me he gets re-upped in November.
um, no.
Well, if Beltre really is going to try and play the whole season with a torn wrist ligament that needs surgery, we may need someone to play third, or at least stand out there and knock balls down. I can’t believe Beltre didn’t have his wrist looked at until December even though he tore it in September; that just sounds spectacularly stupid to me.
Beltre is the best free agent the Mariners h (ave ever signed (my humble opinion).
I questioned if Front Office should extend his contract at the end of the season. The answer was a quickly Yes. Please Bavasi do it now.
to be accurate, it is scar tissue build-up “between the thumb and forefinger.”
Since we all know the value of true grittieness and hustle, why can’t we find more players like Beltre for our franchise? I think everyone here knows it’s all about marketing, so let me make a motion for Beltre’s re-signing based on the fact that he’s a gold glover, handles the bat well, and can provide that ever so marketable “grittieness and hustle”! That and just pray that Beltre will provide of the above that we can just go ahead and sign the best available ballplayers to fill out the roster.
Can I get a second for the motion on the floor so I can ratify this resolution?
That and just pray that Beltre will provide *enough* of the above
Geoff is a tad baffled by the Genus MarinerFan
Mariners management doesn’t know from hustle and grittiness.
My read on the Beltre article is that is the Mariners’ fault for failing to discover the torn ligament.
because they tried to get him to get an MRI and he refused?
Well shoot, if Willie won’t sign an extension…maybe we can lock up Cairo for another couple years?
Re: #5 Exactly!!! If the M’s love all these veteran intangibles he brings, and no one else even offered him a spring invite…why not offer him a coach job first before the guaranteed money offer??
Good Lord! Can you imagine how many low outside pitches he’d swing at if he was healthy?
I don’t know where I got “September” from; he tore the ligament in June. So he’s going to play almost two entire seasons with it. I can’t believe that’s a smart move.
Wow…if that happened last June, that was a heck of a season for AB considering he was playing hurt for more than half of it.
I think the red sox have shown with Schilling that teams can get the players to do pretty much anything they darn well want them to do medically. If the M’s knew Beltre was hurt and they let it go this long without having him get an MRI then it displays their stupidity in the front office….again…for the nth time…
oh, there are just as many examples of players not doing what their team thinks is best.
Only for those teams that are unwilling to force the issue.
msb,
No, because the team blew the initial diagnosis:
“…The diagnosis at the time was a sprained thumb….When the injury, which was supposed to heal with rest, didn’t come around after the season ended, Beltre finally underwent an MRI exam at the urging of the team’s medical staff….”
He blew off the team from October until December. If it had been detected in October (when the season ended), he could have had the surgery and been healed by now. That’s HIS fault, not the team’s. Though I have to say, the M’s seem to be big on the “be a man, walk it off, don’t go cryin’ to the doc or you’re a pussy” mentality.
The injury occurred in June. The Mariners’ medical staff missed the tear, and diagnosed a sprain.
After making the wrong diagnosis, the Mariners compounded the mistake by letting Beltre play after only five days rest, even though the pain was still severe.
The Mariners had four (4) months to order an MRI, but failed to act.
When the season concluded, the Mariners told Beltre the pain would go away with rest. There is no allegation that the Mariners suggested that Beltre immediately undergo an MRI in October.
Having said all the above, I am not certain we have all the facts yet.
Blaming Beltre for this, however, is ludicrous.
Who should we blame for Beltre’s home run tonight?
Just curious…
Beltre was told the injury was going to heal with rest. Why is that his fault?
Beltre had his best season in LA playing with the pain from the bone spurs; his July-Aug-Sept numbers last year were as good or better than his April-May numbers (June was clearly messed up, and he missed those games).
I always wondered if his altered stance because of the bone spurs helped him have that good season. It’s hard to come up with such a silver lining for a hand injury. And yet, his months after it were far from his worst months at the plate in an M’s uniform. Perhaps pain distracts him from overthinking, or something.
The left hand is his glove hand, though, and a lot of his value lies in that glove. We’re likely to see him sit out parts of games, and get more rest days. Expect M’s pitching to look worse as a consequence.
