Off-day cornucopia of goodness

DMZ · April 3, 2008 at 8:58 am · Filed Under Mariners

If, like me, you’ve got nothing better to do than sit around, cough, and maybe go see a doctor today, it might be worth noting that both Comcast and DirecTV are running a free week of MLB Extra Innings, which means…

9:05, White Sox @ Indians. Danks v Westbrook. Warning: White Sox broadcast crew.
10:05, Nationals @ Phillies. Bergmann v the Ageless Jamie Moyer
10:05, Royals @ Tigers. Greinke v Bonderman. See what may be one of the finest offenses assembled in years! And the Royals.
10:10, Angels @ Twins. The Other Santana v Slowey. Boo the Angels! Boo them!
4:05, Rays @ Orioles. Sonnanstine v Trachsel. The dark horse AL East team and Adam Jones. Plus, if you loved seeing Vicente’s slowness, you’ll swoon over Steve Trachsel’s glacial pitching pace.
4:10, Pirates @ Braves. Duke, the pitcher Derek followed too closely, against MIKE FREAKING HAMPTON!!!! If you thought the M’s spent money foolishly, may I present Exhibit A in the counterargument?

It’s almost worth being sick for.

Sigh. I wish Dish Network could offer Extra Innings. It is nice that Dish Network is carrying all the Mariners games in high-def, so I shouldn’t complain.

Can we talk about how awesome it is that Extra Innings now carries both the home and away feed?

    No more Yankee Al-Jazeera. Hooray!

  3. Goob on April 3rd, 2008 9:27 am

Great, between this and Battlestar Galactica there’s no way I leave my couch for the next 100 hours. My health and hygiene won’t appreciate this.

  4. DMZ on April 3rd, 2008 9:28 am

I had no idea they’d gone to both home and away feeds — I just swapped over to the Cleveland feed (to see Asdrubal Cabrera come to the plate).

  5. bakomariner on April 3rd, 2008 9:36 am

It is good they’ve gone to both feeds, but I don’t know if I can listen to Blowers for a whole season…sometimes the away announcers are a pleasant change…

  6. DMZ on April 3rd, 2008 9:37 am

Juan Uribe looks like one of those meat tubes you can buy in the freezer section. When did he get so… uh… Gwynn-esque?

  7. Mr. Egaas on April 3rd, 2008 9:40 am

I for one am excited because Ubaldo Jimenez, Johnny Cueto, and Dustin McGowan all go today… they are a few of my speculative rocksauce fantasy picks this year.

    [coughcough]

    gosh, I’m feeling … lightheaded.

I’m sure my sofa is calling me home.

    [that’s not Heathenistic. Also, ugh]

  10. msb on April 3rd, 2008 10:01 am

    anymore than Sterling does?

and, possibly because they work for the broadcast company which is actually owned by the Yankees?

  11. msb on April 3rd, 2008 10:17 am

well, let us know if Old Man Moyer acts as the stopper for the Phillies today.

Moyer just got lit up for 5 in the top of the first!

This is my fourth year receiving the MLB package. Yep, this dual feed thing is a wonderful change (except I still have to listen to Dave Sims for part of the game – he’s simply gotten worse as he’s become more comfortable, sorry. I mistook him for a kind of cool low-key guy when he started in Spring Training last year, now he’s sort of a dorky guy who intentionally states things in a goofy way, all the while trying to have snappy banter with the proctologist-like personality of Mike Blowers. It’s harder to listen to as time goes on, and he doesn’t even make up for it with baseball knowledge. It’s a shame, cause he’s kind of an ok sportscaster in other sports).

Anyway, if this format keeps up, I think it is great. I won’t have to listen to the crew from Oakland, or L.A. or Texas – EVER AGAIN. Here’s hoping. If you don’t like our crew, you need only listen to some of these other cities to feel better about our situation.

man, the Nats are on a roll, and that was an ugly looking inning.

so are they showing the D-backs/Reds game with LHP “Doug Davis [who] was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last week and will make his first two starts of the season before undergoing surgery April 10.”?

  16. morisseau on April 3rd, 2008 10:49 am

which provider is it that offers dual feeds? Must be DirectTV, as I don’t see that available through Comcast (in seattle).

    Little help, someone?

  17. Jack Howland on April 3rd, 2008 11:00 am

The Nats went to painstaking measures to put in an all right handed lineup against Moyer. Felipe Lopez in left and Aaron Boone at first? I don’t think Moyer has the split differential to deserve that kind of treatment.

  18. LA M's Fan on April 3rd, 2008 11:08 am

DirecTV does (they have up to four feeds for some games, home and away–and SD and HD). Not sure about cable.

  19. Dave on April 3rd, 2008 11:16 am

Turn on the Reds game, folks. I’m just saying.

  20. msb on April 3rd, 2008 11:28 am

    ah, well.

    The excitement’s over now.

Why oh why can’t that do that for hockey too? If you think baseball has some terrible local broadcasters, just try sitting through a CBJ game. Ye gods.

Mike Hampton. Now there is a name I haven’t heard for a while. I can’t believe he didn’t stay here long enough for the Ms to sign him to a megadeal and THEN fall off a cliff.

  23. msb on April 3rd, 2008 12:31 pm

I think Hampy fell off the cliff, broke both legs, had them begin to heal (badly) as he slowly climbed, hand-over-hand, back up the cliff (every now & then slipping backwards, only to land on one of those conveniently-placed horizontal tree branches) and is once again reaching his hand towards the top of the cliff … patting the dirt, looking for one more hand-hold.

  24. msb on April 3rd, 2008 12:44 pm

speaking of a cornucopia of something–

do we know why Gerry Fraley, Jayson Stark and Buster Olney all reported this week that their various pet baseball ‘sources’, ‘officials’ and ‘executives’ feel that the Mariners would sign Barry Lamar if they got into the race…

  25. joser on April 3rd, 2008 1:00 pm

It was probably all the same, singular, “source.”

  26. joser on April 3rd, 2008 1:04 pm

Ok, if the Brewers come back and win this, we’ll have a situation where the trendy picks for the ’08 WS — the Tigers and Cubs — will both start the season 0-3. The Royals are 3-0, atop the AL Central. And the Nats have a chance to start 4-0.

Vidro hitting home runs and stealing bases. Wilkerson stealing bases. Lopez taking pitches and hitting 3-run bombs. Dogs and cats living together….

At least Sexson remains an island of consistency in this bizarro sea.

  27. JI on April 3rd, 2008 2:18 pm

So Brad Thompson huh? That Silva game has nothing on that.

  28. Goob on April 3rd, 2008 2:55 pm

Anybody else hear about how you can see Boston’s home-opener even if you live in Boise? And in Charlotte! Even in Chicago!!

  29. Transient Gadfly on April 3rd, 2008 2:57 pm

various pet baseball ’sources’, ‘officials’ and ‘executives’ feel that the Mariners would sign Barry Lamar if they got into the race…

Hey, you know what would get the M’s into the race? Signing Barry Bonds. Then they’d be able to justify signing Barry Bonds because they’d be in the…OH NO…SWIRLING VORTEX OF CIRCULAR REASONING! I’M SINKING! HEEEELLLPPP MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  30. Spanky on April 3rd, 2008 3:32 pm

The ROYALS (yes, those Royals of Kansas City) have just SWEPT the DETROIT freaking TIGERS! No…this is NOT 1985! Entering Bizzaro World again. Jose Vidro leads the Mariners in home runs. Carlos Silva looks like a staff ace. And the Royals sweep the Tigers.

But wait…Sexson still sucks! Back to reality.

  31. msb on April 3rd, 2008 4:54 pm

you know that cliff Hampton was clinging to?

“The left-hander was a late scratch from Thursday night’s start against the Pittsburgh Pirates after feeling discomfort during his warmup session in the bullpen … a strained left pectoralis muscle”

  32. JG on April 3rd, 2008 4:55 pm

Hampton was scratched from his start with a strained muscle. Really, nothing else needs to be said.

    Beaten to the punch.

  33. smb on April 3rd, 2008 7:55 pm

LOL Hampton. I’m sure he and Denny Neagle are kicking back, having a few beers at this very moment. He’s like the old guy at work with the bad back…never does any work, but somehow makes a bunch of money, and God help you if he’s on your fantasy team.

  34. thefin190 on April 3rd, 2008 11:00 pm

God help you if he’s on your fantasy team.

And to think I almost drafted him. Phewy.
