Looking forward to listening to that … anyway we can start King Felix day early? I would love to celebrate an extra day of Felix.
and, oh, there is so much you can tell Furness about baseball.
Whoah, have to quickly reschedule the next half hour of my life, but I’m on it. 🙂
If KJR talks about NASCAR again everyone gets a full refund.
I’m going to take a wild-ass guess and predict the podcast will be available here at some point in the future, for those that miss it live. (Dave’s last talk, on March 31, is here).
Of course, predictions are often wrong, especially when they’re about the future.
I love these. I wish you could do one every travel day. It’s the next best thing to actual baseball.
tuning in now
LOL – nice 1 dave – throwing vidro under the bus. that was funny.
How long do they take to get them up online?
The question is, how long until we get assaulted with, “YOU HATE THE M’S!!!111oneone”
This season has been thumb sideways so far.
I thought I detected a moment of panic in Dave’s voice when Groz’s substitute seemed like he was asking Dave to agree with the proposition that Vidro was good to have last year because he was a .300 hitter in the two-spot. Two countries separated by a common language, indeed.
Yeah, and the “How can you hate on Vidro, his batting average proves he was the second best hitter on the team last year!”
It seems to take them up to several days to get the podcasts up, but it’s kind of random.
I just loved how he kindly put that Vidro is the worst DH in the history of the game … haha … I think ‘unconventional’ was the word choice.
Dangit I missed it again.
Is it going to be in the KJR RSS this time?
Wow, it’s already available here — streaming or download.
First time I’ve listened in Dave. Great job getting “the word” out there.
Dave,
Just out of curiosity, are you given the questions/topics in advance or do you really think that quickly on the spot?
Having known Dave for ages, let me say that he does think that quickly on the spot.
3/4ths of radio listeners gave the deer in headlight look when Dave mentioned ISO, way to spread the good word Dave!
Just listened to the podcast. Dave, you have an incredible base of Mariner knowledge (and baseball knowledge in general) at you fingertips and it’s an education to listen to you. Good stuff.
If I had to make one suggestion, it would be Slow Down. You sound a little bit like an auctioneer, as though you were trying to cram the most information you can into an admittedly short radio spot. I think if you just pause to breathe once in a while, it will be easier for the average KJR listener to absorb what you have to say. Just my .02.
(Note–in no way am I professional radio guy, but I did host a bunch of music shows and did sports play-by-play in college.)
I didn’t think it was possible for someone to speak as quickly as they think until I heard Dave on the radio.
ISO? Whaaaa??
The funny thing is, I think he was talking a little slower this time. Groz seems to pitch stuff at him faster, and he responds.
I love how Dave can just pull out “11% of his fly balls are going over the wall” in the Frank Thomas discussion. I could find that stat, eventually. And yeah, yay for ISO.
Yeah, Groz is a better and quicker banterer, I agree. But I think by comparison, since this Ian dude wasn’t talking much or shooting too many questions at him, it seemed like he was going even faster. The old theory of relativity, you know.
Just listened. Thumbs sideways, classic and not a cop-out.
I Had a listen to your spot on KJR. You must have been the champion of your HS debate team. It would be refreshing to see more MLB teams look at their personnel and talent evaluation in the same way USSM does. Vidro really is useless in a line up. He is at best a pinch hitter.
It would be nice to see the Ms go out and get a power left handed DH, but from where? And at what cost? I like what the angels have done with 4 outfielders and those guys being the DH rotation. They keep their outfielders sharp at the plate and their legs rested.
I love how Dave can just pull out “11% of his fly balls are going over the wall” in the Frank Thomas discussion.
Isn’t an 11% HR/FB rate league average?
some valid points in that interview, but I’m sorry i would rather watch vidro hit little blooper’s then see frank thomas go deep like once every 100 at bats, and striking out on all the others
CAN I get a “Happy Felix Day” – easily the best day of the week!
?? Thomas at this stage is an immensely more valuable player, especially considering their shared position in the lineup.
I wouldn’t want to see Frank Thomas in a Mariner uniform going 1-for-100 with a HR and no walks either, but I also wouldn’t call that the most likely scenario. On the bright side: under your scenario he won’t hit into any double plays.
Both Vidro and Thomas have been underperforming their 2007 numbers. Thomas had a slow start in 2007. So did Vidro. If you assume neither fell off a cliff in the offseason, and expect them both to more or less match their 2007 seasons by the end of 2008, it’s not really a contest. Even playing half his games in Safeco, Thomas is the more valuable player.
Unfortunately, that does nothing to solve the corner outfield problem(s).
