Oh, Felix
I can’t feel anything but happiness after watching that.

Wow! Big win for the Mariners! That is probably the best game that they have played all season.
Good for the M’s. Nice win, and a great game by King Felix.
Still would have liked to see McLaren try Reed in LF, Raul at DH, and Wlad in RF. I guess he was going with the “Vidro, Raul, and Reed all bat left-handed” bit. Can’t really blame him. Maybe if Wlad was smoking hot right now.
1 – I agree great win … but that 1-0 shutout of Boston was the best game I’ve seen in 3 years. (prob bc of Red Sox nation) either way … Felix when hes focused is really a treat.
Hey Derek,
I’m sure this has been brought up before, but do you think there is any correlation between Felix throwing more fastballs and less breaking stuff than last year and the fact that hitters seem to be doing better against him than in the past?
No walks = definition of happiness.
5 – couldn’t agree more. pitching utopia.
No walks + 7 K’s = utter domination
Few hard hit balls hit right at M’s defenders, but a great game nonetheless. This after a line drive that was fixing to take his head off.
This was, indeed, the prettiest game of the year so far. I say ‘so far’ with every hope they can match this at least once or twice again this season.
And it’s crappy that he has to get those two unlucky HBPs.
I believe we’ll see Felix do that again this season, and to better teams. Not as confident about the rest of the guys. I’d put money on not seeing Kenji steal home again.
It was finally a pleasure again to watch the entire game.
It was a good game to watch. What do we think of the 8 flyouts vs. 6 groundouts, though? Just chance or continuation of a trend?
AP headline for the game:
Led by Johjima, Seattle knocks off Detroit (AP)
Imagine this rotation next year wtih Bedard, Felix, Morrow, and Frierabend.
Not too shabby.
I’d put money on not seeing Kenji steal home again.…ever, in the rest of his life.
Mac pulled Felix after 87 pitches! Given how entrenched their philosophy on pitchers (let them go too long 115-120 pitches) has seemed, could this be the start of something?
Unfortunately, DMZ’s title has put Journey’s “Oh, Sherry” in my head and it won’t go away.
[see comment guidelines]
WOW… that didn’t work did it?
I swear to god I only copied the lyrics part of that web page…
Uh, thanks. Actually, I had to look up the name of the girl, I just had that annoying voice in my head. I’ll try having him sing the whole song through and see if that gets rid of him.
Though I’d like to see the lyrics if they went through all those translations and came back into English.
What a way to ruin a thread, bringing up Journey. Hwhaaugh!. They should be erased from music history. On the pitch count thing, just wondering if maybe it’s a sign of some brain activity on the part of the managerial staff.
Didn’t get to see the end of the game. Box score says Putz had 2 strikeouts, is he looking better?
Actually, it’s not Journey.
It is lead singer, Steve Perry, singing Oh Sherry…
Love the mullet…
It could be worse. “Ohhhhh-klahoma where the something something something” (about herders and ranchers and Sonices owners and brokeback mountain and whatever)
Putz was fine until the final batter. He got two quick strikes on Guillen and then was all over the place a la Morrow, taking the count full, before getting him to fly out.
that was a very nice time.
well, that is the traditional Safeco 9th inning of just about any closer I see in person, so it looked normal to me.
re #16:
The AP wire story seemed to suggest that Felix’s calf was tightening up during the game. Given that, being overly cautious about pulling him after 7 seems reasonable.
not just a suggestion– both Mac & Felix said they asked & he told them it was getting tight & tired
Awesome game… but the GB/FB ratio is still not where it could/should be for my likings. Especially with Raul “covering” spacious left field.
I wouldn’t worry about the GB/FB when Felix has the command he had today. He won’t have it always, but today it looked like he was toying with their bats and their minds. I swear on one of the curves he threw for the third strike he was walking off the mound before the ball hit Kenji’s glove. A thing of beauty.
Morrow’s been fabulous so far this season, but today’s pitch sequence was just brilliant. After a few fastballs to Renteria, they throw a beautiful slider / curve tailing on the outer part of the plate that had the hitter reaching and tapping over to Yuni. Next batter gets two curves for strikes then a blistering 99mph fastball low and away.
I wish they’d figure out how to pitch Felix with this kind of pitch selection mixing.
E…..x….t….e…n…s…i….o….n……
Felix was an absolute joy to watch today. There is literally no ceiling for how great this kid might become. His stuff and his swagger are both devastating.

I agree!!! Howard Lincoln, get this guy in your office right now and start writing that check. Let’s keep maybe the best 25 and under starting pitcher around in Seattle for life.
It’s the “Los Marineros” jerseys that did it. Hispanic pride and all that.
yah, you could really see that spurring Joh on, as he raced towards home.
if the Padres can wear their camo unis, I assume the Ms could be Los Marinaros again if they wanted ….
I still want to see McLaren come out to the mound in a big “Pirates of Penzance” admiral’s uniform. He’s failing as a manager, but he could redeem himself as a mascot.
Clearly I missed something.
I went to the game yesterday fully expecting to see Washburn get shelled. Imagine my surprise at seeing Felix, and then an abolute gem of a game!
When did the rotation get jiggered? I’d swear when I checked the probable pitchers last Wednesday or Thursday it said Washburn…
let’s not have a game thread today until around the 3rd inning. Seemed to work well so far.
Ridiculous. The media focus on a fluke steal of home on a broken play rather than superlative pitching for 9 inning. And all three Ms pitchers were a treat to watch. Great stuff.
well, actually it is the guy stuck adding the headline on to a story …
A couple starts ago Felix was pulled because of a sore calf (I think) and Washburn – who had only pitched a couple of innings in his last start against – was moved up in the order. Hence, your lucky break.
